    3. This is my first time of using rootsweb, can anybody help? I'm looking for information on two Bentleys. First, the marriage of Edward Bentley born 1813 in West Tisted. Second, any information at all on Edward's father, also called Edward, born about 1781 and married, I think, to Elizabeth Stevens. I have been unable to find any record of his birth and have run into a brick wall. Best wishes and regards, David Cooper _________________________________________________________________ Get the best of MSN on your mobile http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/147991039/direct/01/

    3. Hi Francis.   someome else (I've lost the contact) was researching the Fewgate name a while back and came across Fucat, Fuckett, Fugate, Fuget, Fugget, Fuggett, Fugit.  Alas neither the Oxford 'Dictionary of English Surnames' nor Reaney's 'Origin of English Surnames' mention any of these.   If it is derived from the French Fuquet (Ardennes and Gironde), as seems likely, some were certainly settled on the I.o.W. by the turn of the 15/16 centuries (Freshwater, Middleton, Yarmouth).   A look at the Huguenot Records might be advisable as the dates are relevant - a lot of them also went to Georgia and Virginia at this time.   It is unlikely to be a diminutive of the old English Fuche, Fudge, Fuge, Fuidge because of the hard 'g'.   Regards, David

In my tree I have a Thomas Earwaker b.1879 Swanmore the son of Thomas & Harriett Earwaker.  A Thomas Earwaker married Alice Miles at Droxford 1903.  I was wondering if anyone has an Alice Miles in their tree and so could help me prove or disprove that the Thomas Earwaker is the Thomas in my tree. Cheers, Alan

    3. Hello David Nice to hear from you again. I've also seen most of the other alternatives you mention. Fuget is just a straight swap of "g" for "qu" and others are spellings "as heard". Yes, Freshwater and Middleton are where they were. Agreed, Fudge & co don't seem to be connected. 3. There are a number of distinctive names that have become localised in both IOW and Lymington/Milton/Christchurch area - hardly surprising, I suppose. One name common in that mainland area is FUGATT, FUGETT, even spelt FEWGATE. I recently noticed the name FUQUET in an IOW family who did move to Lymington.   It occurrred to me the version with a "G" (it's pronounced as a hard "G") is the Anglicised version of what appears to be a French name. The "G" replacing "QU". Say both out loud (FUQUET phonetically) and there's little if any difference. Does anyone have any thoughts on this ?   My 6g-gf's brother Robert Keeping m Sarah Fugett at Milford-on-Sea in 1794 and I went to school in Christchurch in the 1950s with a Richard Fugatt. Father was a barber at Purewell.     Francis Auckland, NZ

    3. When I sent this I really had given up all hope of getting any information on my great uncle. This has been a great help but the biggest shock was being on a list of Crook names and finding someone who had information on my great Grandmother John V's mother. I found out that although my grandfather had died in 1958 his brother John V. who was born in 1884 lived until 1983. I have rec'd so much information on my CROOK family that I am reading and rereading and certainly now know a lot more about John Vaughn Baggs. Sadly had I known he was still living, Why didn't I know?????? Family secrets?? I do not recall he was mentioned in my grandfather's obituary or that anyone in the family knew anything of his still living in England. It makes me sad I missed him. I found he and his wife in the 1911 census which I had hunted many times before with no mention of either he or his wife and it said no children at that time living or dead. "On 1 April 1948 it was released by the British Ministry of Transport and returned to Cunard. It was then chartered by the Canadian Government to carry Canadian emigrants between Southampton and Halifax. This contract was renewed in 1949. By 1 December 1949 this role had been fulfilled and later that month Cunard announced that the Aquitania would be withdrawn from service. On 9 January 1950 Messrs. Hampton & Sons Ltd., were employed to auction the vessel's furnishings and equipment. Later that month the ship was sold to the British Iron & Steel Corporation Ltd., for £125,000. The ship then sailed from Southampton to Faslane in Scotland where it was broken up." Edna - Ottawa

    3. Re   <<My query is that I can't find this couple details on the Marriage Index for the September Quarter ( or the December one for that matter) so I am wondering if it is possible for a couple to get married in Church but not get their marriage registered?>> Indeed it is. I have "A Comedy of Errors" and "A comedy of Errors part 2" or similar written on the problems with the English BDM registers and just how many events have NOT been registered, wrongly registered, registered twice, etc etc. Hundreds of thousands if not millions! A frequent problem in the early days at least is - the church "quarter" ended around the 25th Dec, 25th March (Lady's Day?) and so on but the official quarter end is the last day of the month. THAT simple thing led to many being missed towards the end of March, etc etc, or registered twice - and I think it seems to have taken decades to sort that one thing out. Add in missing records, transcription errors, bad handwriting, bits of paper lost in the clergy pockets, and so on and on - oh yes it is very possible to miss registrations of one kind or another - marriages especially from memory. If you can get to the local registry office instead of the main one, the GRO, then you will find some more that got missed between the tow, and then more between the parish churches and the local reg offices - and still there will be more just plain missed! And of course, common law marriages did occur for which there is no marriage record ever to be found because the marriage never took place. Get back as close to the site of the marriage as you can, have a look for banns, and anything else you can find. You may find that a page was missed with several marriages on it - leading to say five numbers not existing.. and you have to surmise then I suppose unless you get the original church records. Good luck Dawn (Melbourne Australia)

    3. Could someone tell me where the burial records of Lymington churches or cemetery would be held for the period 1945 -1950 ? I am trying to find where someone was buried in 1947. He lived in Sway, but is not buried there. He died in a hospital in Lymington. I could travel to Lymington if they are held there. Many thanks, Lynda.

    3. Edna, There is an interesting pdf article online - http://www.atlanticliners.com/Images/Other%20Images/PDF/Earl%20Stott%20Voyage%20on%20the%20Aquitania.PDF that suggests that Aquitania had radar sufficiently accurate to identify a U-boat in 1944. However, her radar would probably not have been sufficiently advanced for her to pick her way 'blind' out of such a busy port as Southampton in fog, so I would think that was a reasonable explanation for the delay. Today, fog is unlikely to interfere with schedules because all vessels of any size have advanced radar systems and other navigational aids.
