Here is some information about my family I badly need help with this family I have hit the proverbial stone wall several times very hard and it hurts. Thanks Chris 1. JOHN HAMILTON was born in Mullaghbrack, Armagh in 1752. 2. He joined the Royal Artillery at Woolwich in February 1772. 3. He married ISABELA DODS of Edinburgh around 1775/6. (Marriage location is unknown). 4. John served his military career in many locations. For 23 years being station in Newfoundland where CHARLES GUSTAVE HAMILTON was born in 1780. Early 1784, John was invalided home on half pay. He returned to his homeland in Ireland and lived at several locations in that country. He moved from place to place with some frequency and we believe that he probably stayed with relatives. During the next ten years he was resident for a time at the following Places, not all of which I have been able to locate: Sligo, Enniskillen, Mercury (?), Summerhill and Edinburgh.. 5. The "half pay" that John was entitled to needed to be collected and signed for in London, and John was rarely able to collect the monies himself. Others were delegated by Proxy to collect the cash and John signed a note giving permission for the quartermaster to release the money to them on presentation of said note.Among those delegated to cpllect the said Money, was one :Thomas HAMILTON, Rector of Lower Inoville(?) 6. From July 1791-December 1793, John and his wife stayed for 2½ years in Edinburgh. During this period his half pay was collected several times by JOSEPH DODS of Edinburgh, obviously a close relative of Isabela's. 7. John eventually returned to active service in January 1794. He had a child WILLIAM HENRY VERE HAMILTON born in Jersey in 1796 and eventually died in 1807 in Plymouth, England 8. Isabella DODS died in Jersey, where she was living with one of her sons, in 1820. Her burial record states that she was "of Edinburgh", but gives no age. 9. The family lived thereafter in Guernsey, where my Great Grandmother CAROLINE HAMILTON was born 25th September 1820. Caroline was the only family member as far as we know to return to Ireland. Presumably she lived with relatives. She was married in Londonderry Cathedral in October 1852 to CHARLES KENNETT (RIC) and died in Newry in 1870. 10. The family used a coat of Arms described in "Burkes Armory" under HAMILTON of St Peter Port, Guernsey. The Ulster King of Arms has no further information on this and as the coat of Arms is "differenced" from the Abercorn arms. We assume that they were (1) realted to this family, but (2) could not prove it. 11. Many of the descendants of John Hamilton were given the name VERE as a middle name and so some connection to the Vere family is assumed. It is possible that John's father was named VERE HAMILTON, per the IGI I cannot verify this or discover its origin.
