Rachel, Do you have any connections in Grand Tower, IL or East St Louis, IL? My grandfather was Carl Ellsworth Hamilton in Grand Tower and my father was Charles W. Hamilton in East St Louis, IL. Carl died in 1947 in Ohio and Dad died in 1985 in Belleville, IL. I can't get past my gg-grandfather, Leo Fenwick Hamilton from DuQuoin, Il. No info prior to that. Mary, Just because you seem to be having little luck with finding info on Leo Fenwick Hamilton, and were a neighbor to my wife's Hamiltons, and (actually my wife and I!)I'll offer this: We see Peliza Wells Hamilton (communicated in a private email as your gg-grandmother, second wife of Leo Fenwick Hamilton) as an apparent widow in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census in DuQuoin, Perry County, IL, living near a Lewis Wells. Her son is Lewis, presumably your g-grandfather, aged 4 in 1850. The marriage records for Perry County, IL show that Leo was alive in 1846 when he married Peliza. He is not found in Perry County, IL (apparently) in 1840, but there is a Leo Hamilton in Perry County, MO. (More on that later.) Family histories of the Wells family in DuQuoin, Illinois on RootsWeb say that the family migrated early to Illinois territory then returned to KY due to Indian problems, then returned to Illinois later. A search for Leo Fenwick (no Hamilton) reveals few hits online. However one of the hits shows a Leo Fenwick born in 1797 to Joseph Fenwick, and that Joseph's older daughter Clara or Claire married George Alexander HAMILTON. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hiteklawyr&id=I08 52 According to sources Joseph Fenwick himself moved to Perry County, MO before he died in 1820. Note this is where a Leo Hamilton in found in 1840. There are no sources directly suggesting that Leo Fenwick Hamilton is a child of George Alexander Hamilton and Clara Fenwick. However, what records there are online suggest that George Hamilton also lived for a time in Kentucky, as did the Wells, and dies around St. Genevieve, Perry County, MO, and that his father was also: Leonard. To me this suggests that Leo Fenwick Hamilton might well have descended from George Alexander Hamilton. If the William or Samuel Hamilton found in Perry County, Illinois in 1840 are shown to be descendants of George Alexander, it would be a fairer speculation. Can anyone on the list help?
