Greetings List: I am researching the Hamilton's of this small locality in Lanark. I've been trying to follow the land records in order to establish relationships. Most of the lands of Glengavel, Torfoot, Drumclog, Linbank, Kype, Hareshaw, Lethame and Carnduff were owned by James Hamilton of Fynnart, the "Bastard of Arran." According to the House of Hamilton, he received these lands under the Great Seal on 26 June 1533. He also received Kittymure. (III Mag. Sig., 1291/2) On October 8th, 1539, he received the lands of Glengavill. (III Mag. Sig. 2030) His lands were forfeited for high treason in 1540 and he was executed. Some of his lands were briefly redistributed to others, but on 2 July 1547, he had confirmation to himself and his spouse Helen Cuninghame of the 32 merk lands of Glengavill and the 5 merk lands of Drumclog and Brintsnab. The brief, temporary holder of his father's lands was supposedly Thomas Hamilton of Torrance, who is shown in occupation of part of the lands of Glengavill and Kype 14 January 1545. Sir Andrew Hamilton of Goslington just across the stream of Kytpe Water, was brother to Sir James of Fynnart and they were both sons of Sir James Hamilton of Stonehouse. I am descended of Hamilton of Kype, the line that produced Gavin Hamilton, friend and mentor of Robert Burns. In 1609, John Hamilton of Kyp appeared as a debtor of Sir Robert Hamilton of Goslington. Just looking at the land ownership, it seems to me that "our" Hamilton's are descended from the Stonehouse Hamilton's through Sir James Hamilton of Fynnart, with some possible intermingling with the Hamilton's of Goslington. I would appreciate joining the conversation with others researching these lines. I just joined the list today, but have lot's to share - if you do. Cordially, Edgar M.
