He is one of 6 children of Thomas Hamilton and Sarah Westfall. (Thomas had 6 more children with Lydia Colborn after Sarah's untimely death in 1785) There are those who say Thomas father is the Thomas Hamilton from Perry/Cumberland Co. That Thomas (called Thomas Sr.) was likely a brother to Alexander Hamilton of Pine Creek, PA. Thomas and Alexander served together in the French & Indian War at fort Agusta, and both were Revolutionary soldiers. Alexander was killed by indians during the "Big Runaway" incident of Northampton County in 1779. I am sorting out Alexander and Thomas Sr's family- it is not impossible that they are related to My James and his father Thomas. But I am not sure that Thomas Sr. is my Thomas father- possibly an uncle. Since my James of Crawford Co. may very well be of some relation to your John, this should be of interest to you. It may be that your John descends from my James father, Thomas (Jr.), or from his possible family in Pine Creek or Perry / Cumberland Co. Interestingly, Sampson Hamilton of Meadville in the 1830 census was the son of Alexander Hamilton from pine Creek. Also the Logues and Custards appear both in Crawford County, and near the Pine Creek area Hamiltons.
