    3. It seems the first Hamiltons were actually Fitz Gilberts who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, from Normandy. For service William gave them land in a place named Hambleton in Scotland and they took their name from the area. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a while since I read this in a book of Scottish Genealogy. Connie
