My Mary Hamilton, born 1774, married James Wier (Weir) born 1769, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Faulkner Wier). They lived at Cookstown, Co. Tyrone. Mary's mother was a Boyd, sister of James Boyd who married in 1780 Nancy Agnes Wier, sister of James Wier, and William Boyd born 1747 who married Margaret Lyons. (They married at her church, Cookstown First Presbyterian, but it was recorded at Carland Presbyterian where the Boyds attended and where her name was recorded as Agnus Weir, Agnes being a translation of Nancy.) William Boyd's daughter Jane or Nancy Jane Boyd married Robert Wier/Weir, son of Thomas Wier Jr. and wife Mary (Withrow), meaning Robert Wier was a nephew of Nancy/Agnes Wier Boyd and James Wier who married Mary Hamilton. Robert & Jane Boyd Weir were born in Tyrone, came to S.C. when young, then settled near Sparta, Illinois. There is some conflicting information on Jane Boyd Hamilton's family, but years ago these were listed in a letter as her children: SAMUEL Hamilton born 1771 ("who paid his younger brothers' passage"), "POSSIBLY Robert" Hamilton ("born 1773" married "Mary" Ross), Mary Hamilton born 1774 married James Wier/Weir, another daughter who married Mr. Weir, Jennie married Mr. Neal, a daughter who married Mr. Hays, another daughter who married Mr. Weir, James Hamilton born 1783 married in 1811 Nancy/Agnes Dinsmore/Dinsmoore and settled near Pittsburg (had a son, Wm. Dinsmore Hamilton, who later lived at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania), Rose Ann/Roseanne Hamilton married Mr. Nesbit(t). I think I have his name somewhere, their dates and some of their descendants. Regarding the two other sisters who married Weirs, one of those could be Samuel Wier/Weir, brother of James Wier, but whether two sisters married the same man (Mr. Weir) or not, I don't know. If these were two different Weir men, then one or both of them could be cousins of James Wier. Regarding the Robert Hamilton born 1773, some list him as a brother of this family and some don't. It appears that they mean the Robert Hamilton born circa 1771 who married MARTHA Ross and went from Chester Co., S.C., to Marissa, Illinois. There has been a lot written on Robert and Martha Ross Hamilton, and she was called Mary Ross in one biography of one great-grandson in the Enclopedia of Illinois. Their family went with the Boyds, Weirs and other connected families from S.C. to the Sparta and Marissa, Illinois area, so I think that's why some thought this Robert was the son. I was told by one descendant, however, that Robert born 1771 who married Mary Ross was a son of Samuel Hamilton and Jane Hanna, and this Samuel died about 1799 in Chester Co., S.C. I think some may have confused our Jane Boyd Hamilton with Jane Hanna Hamilton. One descendant wrote that the name Robert appears in our family lists but that the list was confusing as to whether he was Jane Boyd Hamilton's husband or a son. Some show Jane Boyd Hamilton's husband as Samuel, while others speculate on other names. Even Jane's name might be confused. Anyway, whether there was a Robert Hamilton among Jane's children or not, I think it's safe to say he was not the Robert Hamilton born c1773 who married Mary Ross and moved to Illinois. But I think those Hamiltons could be related some way. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
