researching Canadian (QUEBEC and Saskatchewan) Hamiltons with ties to VT, NH and MA My Great Great Grandfather James Hamilton arrived from Ulster about 1830 and married Mary Hammond daughter of Matthew Hammond in the Gore in 1832. the Hammonds arrived from county Cavan in Ireland in 1830. The Gore is an area of rugged hills to the Northeast of Lachute, Quebec in Argentuil County. I have found my Hamiltons in the Canadian census records for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891. In 1865 they were enticed by a land company to go and resettle in the Eastern townships of Quebec to the Southeast of Sherbrooke, Compton County, in the towns of Randboro, East Clifton (called Clifton de St. Isadore today), and Johnville. This is right on the VT/NH border with Quebec. James and Mary had the following children 1. Nancy Elizabeth (Eliza) Hamilton born March 15, 1833 married William D Gordon August 17, 1852 Presbyterian Church Lachute Quebec died March 13, 1920 buried in Presbyterian Cemetery East Clifton Quebec.
