It isn't being returned, it is being sent to you, as a member of the list. At least, I think that is probably what is happening. For approximately three weeks in May and June John Giacoletti and I made a research trip to Northern Ireland to gather information on some of the Defenders of Derry. I said I would post our findings to the various lists that had been contacted prior to our departure. To view all of our posts please go to the rootsweb.com main page and find the link to "threaded archives" Type in COWAN and search June and July 2002 and you will find some really interesting posts describing our research adventures. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me at cscunc@aol.com. Prior to the trip I offered four obscure, out-of-print publications that should be included in every Ulster Presbyterian's genealogical library. They all have either expired copyright provisions or, in the case of the Hagy thesis, I have the author's permission to reproduce the document. The publications are: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast 211 pages We met JB Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprint and he said these books are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. Books contain lists of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, which have never before appeared in print. "Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691," by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Contains biographical sketches (1200+) of the Defenders of Derry "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes," by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 311 pages. Full of genealogical information about the families who were at Derry. "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. And a new addition: "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom" A Study of the Church and Her People, Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, 1954 This book contains more genealogy of the early settlers of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties Virginia than any other. Baptismal records of the Rev. Craig and detailed analysis of many of the early families from the 1740's on. Please contact me privately at cscunc@aol.com for details on how to acquire these materials. It is very slow and cumbersome to contact each list individually so in the future I will be putting these and other items I deem valuable on abebooks.com Once again, I will be happy to answer any questions that have to do with the migration of Scots-Irish people from Ulster to Pa, Virginia and Tennessee. But remember, I probably don't know who your mamma is, I had a hard enough time figuring out who mine was. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

I am new to this list, and new to research outside of New England. I am floundering in uncharted waters! :^) Could someone please help me identify the parents of the above Susannah HAMILTON, of whom I know nothing but her name, the name of her husband, and the town and century in which they lived. I'll be most grateful for any information or suggestions. Thank you - Edie in Maine

Hamilton being the daughter of Matthew & Cora Magee, Hamilton. It looks like we keep running into each other. I'm searching for the parents of Henry S. Hamilton, married Nancy Harriet Parker, 1845, in Copiah County. I have found Green Hamilton with wife Keturrah and children being Elizabeth, Emma and Adella listed in 1880, Copiah County Census. Green Hamilton is the son of John B. and Elizabeth Mosley, Hamilton. John B. was born 1806 (Graniteville, SC), Elizabeth was born 1820 (Boston, Mass). I don't know if this is the same Green Hamilton your Aunt is talking about, Green and his family are living beside the Buckley family in 1880. Hope this helps. P.S. Henry S. Hamilton and Matthew Hamilton served in the Civil War together. Co. H, Bahala Rifles, 10th MS Infantry. Debbie Waldrop

Here is some information about my family I badly need help with this family I have hit the proverbial stone wall several times very hard and it hurts. Thanks Chris 1. JOHN HAMILTON was born in Mullaghbrack, Armagh in 1752. 2. He joined the Royal Artillery at Woolwich in February 1772. 3. He married ISABELA DODS of Edinburgh around 1775/6. (Marriage location is unknown). 4. John served his military career in many locations. For 23 years being station in Newfoundland where CHARLES GUSTAVE HAMILTON was born in 1780. Early 1784, John was invalided home on half pay. He returned to his homeland in Ireland and lived at several locations in that country. He moved from place to place with some frequency and we believe that he probably stayed with relatives. During the next ten years he was resident for a time at the following Places, not all of which I have been able to locate: Sligo, Enniskillen, Mercury (?), Summerhill and Edinburgh.. 5. The "half pay" that John was entitled to needed to be collected and signed for in London, and John was rarely able to collect the monies himself. Others were delegated by Proxy to collect the cash and John signed a note giving permission for the quartermaster to release the money to them on presentation of said note.Among those delegated to cpllect the said Money, was one :Thomas HAMILTON, Rector of Lower Inoville(?) 6. From July 1791-December 1793, John and his wife stayed for 2½ years in Edinburgh. During this period his half pay was collected several times by JOSEPH DODS of Edinburgh, obviously a close relative of Isabela's. 7. John eventually returned to active service in January 1794. He had a child WILLIAM HENRY VERE HAMILTON born in Jersey in 1796 and eventually died in 1807 in Plymouth, England 8. Isabella DODS died in Jersey, where she was living with one of her sons, in 1820. Her burial record states that she was "of Edinburgh", but gives no age. 9. The family lived thereafter in Guernsey, where my Great Grandmother CAROLINE HAMILTON was born 25th September 1820. Caroline was the only family member as far as we know to return to Ireland. Presumably she lived with relatives. She was married in Londonderry Cathedral in October 1852 to CHARLES KENNETT (RIC) and died in Newry in 1870. 10. The family used a coat of Arms described in "Burkes Armory" under HAMILTON of St Peter Port, Guernsey. The Ulster King of Arms has no further information on this and as the coat of Arms is "differenced" from the Abercorn arms. We assume that they were (1) realted to this family, but (2) could not prove it. 11. Many of the descendants of John Hamilton were given the name VERE as a middle name and so some connection to the Vere family is assumed. It is possible that John's father was named VERE HAMILTON, per the IGI I cannot verify this or discover its origin.
