    2. D_T_Leo
    3. I am looking for the ship name that my line of Hamilton's came over on. They left Scotland in 1769 and arrived along the east coast (some where close to Northumberland, PA) in 1770. When they sailed there was John Hamilton b 1749 wife Agnes Nancy Rayburn b 1750 2 small children Janet and Robert and while at sea Nancy gave birth to my line John Hamilton b 1770. I am amazed that both the mother and child survived ! Does anyone know of a port that was around Northumberland, PA in 1770 ? As most of you can guess when I type in "John Hamilton" I get more than I can handle !! I also tried ports in Fife Scotland but had no luck Any ideas ?? Thank you Trisha Hamilton-Leo

    3. Although I am not an expert, I have been told that American Indians who were dark in color would often tell the census taker they were mulatto or black. Otherwise, they were treated as Indians instead of free colored...which, depending upon where they lived, could mean they were forced to move westward (walk). Also, sometimes the census taker would write the designation based upon his observation or what the neighbors told him. sharon JBree87700@aol.com wrote: >Hi Dolly, I've never seen a census designation for "Black Irish"; I'd assume >B to be Black or some % thereof. 3. Ann, I would disagree, in that there is much hullaballoue on the "Black" Irish and Dutch. There are 24 pages re the "myth of the Black Irish" which is a must to read. You can find it at "http://www.darkfiber.com/blackirish/"..... There is another study involving the "Indian" which is very convincing - I lost the file on my computer and am looking for the 'hard copy' that has been misfiled or mis-stacked. :-) when found, I'll let'cha know. 1. [HAM] Question on Black Irish
    2. Hi Jim, Great article on Black Irish. Thanks. I know this is a Hamilton page, but my question is this, on some of the US Census, when researching the Irish last name of "Buckley," I came across a few surnames of Buckley with color origin shown with a "B" for black verses "W" for white. Do I assume that this is the actual skin color, or would this be regarding the Black Irish issue? My great grandfather, James Booth Buckley did marry Emma E. Moreland (both born in Ky. and married in 1886 in Ky). She is rumored to be of Indian decent. Full or part Indian is in question and I have not been able to verify this. I would appreciate if you can clarify this for me. Much Thanks, Dolly from Ohio

    3. I too would like to thank Jim regarding "Hornbeck/blkdutch.htm. I have read and read the "myths" and I suppose we just have to form our own opinion until someone really puts it in "black&white" - no pun intended. :-) I would like to offer the site that I can 'believe in' (coming from the injun line) http://www.darkfiber.com/blackirish/ I would also recommend that all "Irish" decendants read: "The story of the Irish Race by MacMANUS" and "The Scotch-Irish" by James G. Leyburn. I wished I had read these book before seeing "Braveheart" which really painted a true picture. Ken Hamilton/Sparks/Choctaw Baker, Santa Maria, CA Bill Penrose wrote: > Thanks Jim.
