No married name for her yet, and did she marry in Canada or USA. or maybe not at all. 3. Hi listers, I am posting my query here, because there are so many Americans always asking about their Hamilton Ancestors. My query is about a Hamilton Descendant who moved to Phoenix, Arizona, some years ago. Could someone please tell me where, and who I would contact down there. Are there lists like this one in the States? Many Thanks, Dorothy

    3. If you can only see 5 states from the 1930 census I suggest that you refresh your page when it comes up as they are almost done with the 1930 census and have started to index states. I have been a member of Ancestry for about 4 years and I will say that in the beginning I had more luck using other resorces but not now. Having the census on the internet allows me to sit at home in my nightgown and a cup of coffee doing my research. If I have a hard time sleeping at night there is the computer to do what I want till I get sleepy. There are problems with some of their links to the proper pages in the census and also their scans. I usually send them an e-mail of the error and it is corrected. We are all not perfect, at least the last time I checked. If you found nothing available to you on Ancestry then you are probably looking for birth, marriage records, these I must admit are not always available. You would have to check church records or historical societies for that. By the joining of Ancestry and Rootsweb there is more available than a year ago. So don't say Ancestry has done nothing for you. 2. Firstly I must thank those who were kind enough to send the information that I was looking for on the gentleman listed below; I believe that Vere Hamilton is my direct ancestor and am delighted to find out where and when he was buried. Saintfield Church of Ireland Graveyard County: Down Country: Ireland Hamilton Erected by John Hamilton of Belfast in memory of his father Vere Hamilton who died 06 Mar 1759 aged 49 years I am now hoping that someone else might know something more about this man, his family and or other Hamiltons living in this area who may prove to be related. I am as always very grateful for any help and advice that is offered. It is so hard to do research in Ireland while living so far away. Thank you all, Chris

    2. I thought I would add my two cents worth. For me Ancestry has been extremely helpful. I have had to wait months for census film to arrive from library requests and then my library has only one reader and then they limit how long each person can use it. I can read Ancestry census film anytime of day or night and for minutes or hours at my choosing. This is what is good about a membership. Yes, it is a lot of money but convenience and getting to view from home without having to travel makes it worthwhile. I live in a somewhat rural area and to get to other resources takes time, effort and expense for travel. I love having access to Ancestry. I have had many nice surprises finding information about my people. Kathleen

    3. They always call me to see if I want to renew... Also I can't live without the census records and indices (even though indices are not complete). Census images are extra charge. I am getting a bit perturbed by ancestry charging more for everything new. I probably use ancestry more because there is no genealogy library in my town and I have difficulty making it to the nearest one. I have also made use of the marriage and military records...but most of the rest has been of no help to me. I am now trying the newspaper subscription, but so far I don't like the viewer they are using and it takes way too long to search through for the name I am searching for. sharon Robert Millson wrote: >>From my experience with Ancestry.com, it was a waste of my money. 1. Re: [HAM] John Hamilton, born 1770
    2. Trisha: In response to your quest for a ship name, I have no help there. But the port would probably be Philadelphia, for people going on into the interior of PA. I am interested in hearing more about your John Hamilton, born at sea in 1770. I have an ancestor named John Hamilton with the same background and time frame. But mine ended up in the early 1800s in up-country South Carolina, then went on to Lincoln Co. TN. Did your John Hamilton possibly go to SC? Mine married Martha Greer in the 1790s. They named a daughter Nancy Hamilton. Nancy Sicotte

    3. From my experience with Ancestry.com, it was a waste of my money. I found NOTHING of use during my two year membership. The reason, very few records from my state have been placed on the internet. Had to research on my own anyway. Also, membership renewal is automatic. You are not advised until the charge shows up on your credit card bill. Then they tell you you have to notify them months in advance. My recommendation: SAVE YOUR MONEY. ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Hamilton" <briten821@msn.com> To: <HAMILTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 19, 2002 6:46 PM Subject: Re: [HAM] Ancestry.com - special request > Can anyone tell me if it is worth the hundred bucks to subscribe to ancestry.com? I guess it will take awhile for me to forget so free stuff I gladly give.
