I bought the photo at an antique shop in Ottawa, Illinois. I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these in antique shops (with names on the back) and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite the pictures, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them. This picture was taken in about 1910 by my estimate. Hattie and Lena appear to be in the area of 18-22 years of age, and each one is wearing a man’s clothes, from the pants, to shirts, and even to tophats. Each one has a coy smile, and they are obviously posed for the photographer, and are outside near some bushes. Lena is holding a straight cane, and each appears to be wearing a ring on the third finger, left hand. The picture is 4-¼” x 4-¼” and is an original, mounted on heavy cardboard, as was typical during that time period. The picture is in good condition, though it seems that possibly at one time it was larger and the previous owner cut it down from 4-¼” x 6-½” to fit a frame. If either Hattie or Lena are in your family or if you can relate to the Halverson and Strand families, please Email me at margerice@prodigy.net and I will get back to you soon.

I was adopted but before my birthmom passed away she had one of my sister-in-laws write down the information she could still recall. I've been ill and haven't done to much more on my genealogy the past 3 wks. but when I'm better I will get back to it again. I've checked the SS DeathRegister and some names don't come up at all so I know some were born outside of the U.S. I've also come to find just a few names of deceased Halversons (with unusual first names) are only listed once. I'll continue as I stated to keep this up and hopefully we can connect them. I look forward to hearing more and hopefully posting a lot more here as well. Thank you very much for your reply and good luck. Jackie

I have a couple questions for you. Did your Halverson family settle in Canada when they came over? If so which Province? Was your grandfather George born in Canada? I do have a George Halverson in my family tree born 1865. His father immigrated to Canada in 1866 so it would seem he was born in Norway. My great grandfather settled in Quebec Canada when he first came over from Norway. My grandfather was the brother of George. If you see any connection let me know. Jim.
My great grandfather was Aslak Halvorsen b 1809 in Vegusdal . The spelling is different so it probably is no connection. Interesting though. ----- Original Message ----- From: <HALVERSON-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <HALVERSON-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 03, 2002 4:00 AM Subject: HALVERSON-D Digest V02 #15

To Karen Holverson. Do you know the birth date for your Peter Holverson, or where in Norway he may have come from? Do you have any photos of him? I have a Peter H. who left the family, and I have been looking for traces of him. I have one photo of my uncle Peter as a man in his late 20's. Lillian Prevette

Hello List, I have been quietly reading the e-mails of this list, the time has come to introduce myself ............ I am Rowyn (Halverson) MacLean, I live in Nova Scotia. I have been thrilled to find my Norweigan relatives living in the "olde" country. Through help provided by family members of old stories and addresses, I was able to connect back to our Norweigan relatives. Actually ...... when Halvor left for North America he had a twin sister who remained in Norway ... It is her gr. granddaughter that I have been able to contact !!!! and Marie lives in the old home that Halvor left so many years ago. Our founding couple from Norway are: Halvor Halvorson who married Bertha Sarah Jenson in Wallace, Nova Scotia on Oct 27/1883. Halvor, born 1855, from the island of Froyna, outside the village of Riser, south of Oslo. Bertha, born 1861, was from Tvedestrand, in the same area of Norway. This couple had a family of ten children.......their descendants are living in the old homstead in Wallace Grant. children of Halvor and Bertha (Jenson) Halverson: 1) John unmarried buried in Wallace Grant across the road from the old home. 2) Walmer married with children, lived in Wallace, N.S. 3) Clara married George Kirk, children, lived in New Annan, N.S. 4) Martin married with children, lived in Richmond, N.S. 5) Albert (my Grampy) married Roda Jane MacNutt, had children, lived in Malagash, N.S. 6) Katrina married James Chambers, children, lived in Malagash, N. S. 7) Douglas married, children, lived in Tatamagouche, N.S. 8) William married, children, lived in Truro, N. S. 9) George married, children, lived in Pugwas, N.S. 10) Annie unmarried, buried in Wallace Grant Cemetery. I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE CONNECTONS WITH MORE NOVA SCOTIA AND NORTH AMERICAN RELATIVES !!! Marie in Norway has sent me the family-tree in Norway dating back to a forefather born in 1711, Kvastad, Norway. Never stop researching your roots........... :^) Rowyn

Hello all. It is so nice to see all these messages . I am researching my maternal greatgrandmother's Halvorson line. Olaus and Elen Jorgensdtr. Halvorson emigrated from Haldorshavn, Sør Trondelag in 1869 and settled in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. 1/2 the family farm is still in the family, and there has been an annual 4th of July celebration/reunion on the farm since 1877 or even earlier. When the patronymic change came in Norway, the remaining family in Norway chose a modified farm name of Haldorhamn as the last name. In the US the name has been spelled Halvorson, Halversen, Halvorsen - depending on who was writing what. Of Olaus and Elen's 16 children, 9 reached adulthood. Lizzie married Llauritz O. Melbye; Anna (Lava Ingeborg) married Frank Caesar (my great grandparents); Olive married Axel Ahlroth; Peder O. Halvorson; William married Rena Erickson; Georgia married Leonard Montgomery; John married Gunda Manstad; Albert married Mary Bandli and later Albertine Peterson. With one exception all these people stayed in the Rice Lake or Milwaukee area. Peter/Peder O. is the mystery uncle. He was the first son born to them, one month after they arrived in the US. He left home to go West in the late 1900's and was only heard from twice again. I am especially looking for any sign of him. Other lines I am researching are CAESAR (Swedish); BOISVERT (Fr. Canadian); GREENWOOD (Anglicized Boisvert in NE Wisconsin); ALLARD; PELLIGRIN; MASSART; SMITH; SHEARER; STOPPER; SIEWART; PREVETTE, GROVE Good to meet you all, and good luck to us all. Hi, I've hit it big before in a roll call. I'm all for one on the Halverson List! Here's my information: My great-grandparents, who went by the names Martin and Gurine Martin in America, said on censuses that they emigrated to the U.S. from Norway about 1889-90. On most documents, the name Halverson/Halvorsen is also used as a surname for one or both, almost interchangeably, but a little moreso as Gurine's maiden name. Sometime after Martin's death in 1899, Gurine began going by Gurine Martinson. Their six children also were born in Norway and came to the states -- some, they said, in 1887, others, 1888 and 1889. They were (in America) -- Samuel, born about 1870, he never married, lived in Elizabeth until his death in 1932; Lena (Lina) born about 1873, she married Chris Gay (Hans Christian Gay), and they lived first in Elizabeth, N.J., then in Newark; Margaret (who seems to have been Magda Marie Hansine in Norway), was born next, also in the 1870s, married George P. Heiss in Elizabeth, N.J., and lived the rest of her life there. Agnes, born in the late 1870s, married Luther Opdyke in Elizabeth, N.J., and also lived there the rest of her life. George was born about 1879 or 1880 and seems to have lived in New York most or all of the time. He married a woman named Sarah Ann, who was from England, according to the 1910 census. They were living in Yonkers, N.Y., at the time, with George's younger brother, Thomas. Both, at that time, were using the surname Halverson. Thomas, however, had been going by Thomas Martin in Elizabeth between the time he arrived there (sometime in the 1890s) and 1907 or 08, when he and his wife, the former Mildred Grote, moved to Yonkers. Thomas is my grandfather. At first, he and George seem to have spelled their name Halverson. Later, it changed to Halvorsen. Thomas and Mildred separated, and relatives raised some of their children, including my father, also named Thomas (Alfred was either his first or middle named; it varied during the years). I have names of many of the offspring of the six children. My grandfather's children were George, Myrtle, Thomas and Edward "Eddie." I never knew any of them, except my father, but I have recently located all of them and all of their children. George has a daughter, named Dorothy, who lives in New Jersey. Myrtle, who was widowed after having two sons, Walter, and Edward, had two more sons by a later marriage, also Walter and Elwood. Eddie had a son, Robert. It would take too long to list my father's children -- that's a whole story in itself -- but he had eight natural children, two of them named after him, a son Tommy and me, a daughter named Tommi. George and Sarah Ann Halverson/Halvorsen had at least two sons, George and Raymond. Lena had at least three children, Hildor, Henry (Louis) and Mildred. Margaret's children were Mary (Marie), George Jr., Mabel, Ethel and another, I think, whose name slips my mind. Agnes had Edna, James and John. I'll quit here. I tried to list as much as I could in case someone can make a connection. Hoping for the best -- Tommi
