Hello, all, I'm tossing this out in the ring. Was Anthony Hallman born in Switzerland, as most Canadian descendants believed, or was he born in Germany? My thoughts have turned to this because a few days ago I was reading the family history of another ancestor of mine, Jacob Tschantz (Shantz). Jacob was born in Switzerland. The manuscript "Descendants of Jacob Shantz" says that the little that is recorded of Jacob states that he came originally from Switzerland and that, prior to his leaving for America, he resided for about fifteen years in Holland; that he was born about 1710 and that he came to the United States (the Colonies) on a boat named Townshead in 1737...Additional information was discovered in 1924 by Dr. Homer Leroy Shantz while he was attending a botanical congress in the city of Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Shantz visited the Staats House, where he found, among the old emigration records, the following interesting information: STAATSARCHIVE, BERNE LITERALLY TRANSLATED Rodel Weggenogener Manrechten Jacob Tschanz Asked of the Tschanz, Jacob, aus dem amt thun Authorities in Berne, Permission des Manrecht Wegzuzuchen Berwilliget to Emigrate, which was Dem 9, Februarius, 1737 granted. (end of quote) It seems to me that most of our Canadian descendants believed that Anthony was born in Switzerland. Was this a tradition passed down from generation to generation, or is it because Henry S. Hallman made that assertion in his "History of the Hallman Family in Canada" and it was picked up and quoted by Joan Hallman in her book, "Hallman Family History in Canada?" I'd like to hear from you Canadian descendants--where did you first hear that Anthony was born in Switzerland? If it was a family tradition--why hasn't it been passed down through the U. S. descendants? I haven't heard any U.S. descendants say they believed that Anthony was born in Switzerland. We have at least one Hallman on our list, whose ancestor was definitely from Switzerland. He arrived a little later than Anthony to the Colonies, and went South to a Swiss settlement in South Carolina. I'd like to hear what the rest of you (Anthony Hallman) descendants think. Get your messages in to our List so we can discuss this. If ANYONE at all has some proof one way or the other on this, let us know. Thanks, Faith
