    3. Hello, Hallmans, I know from our Get Acquainted Weeks that most of you are very busy people--working part-time or full-time, but if any of you do have time to spare, Rootsweb/USGenWeb could use your help in transcribing Census records. Time can be as valuable as cash to them! See message below from Kay Mason, National Coordinator of the USGenWeb Census Project. The Census Project would be glad to have anyone who wants to volunteer We not only need transcribers, we need proofreaders, and other help too. Please visit our pages at: http://www.usgenweb.com/census/ Thanks so very much! 3. To all Hallmans, It's nice to know Cyndi supports Rootsweb. Her recommendation should go a L-O-N-G way, as she's so well-known in genealogical circles! See her message below. Faith Hi all - Did what I could for RootsWeb this past week. I used it several times in live, online examples in the classes I taught at GENTECH and at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. There is also mention of it in the article I wrote for American Heritage magazine. It is now on the newstands, so pick up a copy or read it online: Tracking Your Family Through Time and Technology http://www.americanheritage.com/99/feb/005.htm Cyndi

    3. Hello, All, It's nice to see activity on our List. Keep the messages coming! I have just a couple things I need to mention again for the new people and others who may have forgotten to do this. (1) Please turn off your HTML before sending any messages to our List. This is a requirement from Rootsweb. HTML makes problems for them. We want to avoid that, since they are so good to us! If you don't know how to turn off your HTML (What is that, anyhow?) you can click this address below which will give you instructions how to do it in your particular program. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm (2) This is for you who are subscribed in Digest Mode. Would you send your messages to our List under HALLMAN-L, please, even though you receive them in Digest Mode. Thanks so much! This will make it easier to locate messages in the archives. If you have any questions on the above, please contact me at my address below. Thank you all! Faith Hutchings Your List Owner (Hostess) faith@verdenet.com

    1. Re: Think of the Archives
    2. Faith Hutchings
    3. Hello, all, I just spent about an hour looking through the archives, not our's but for another surname.Message after message in that archives had just the surname in the subject line. It seemed like a hopeless case to try to find my "Anna." It occurred to me that if everyone on our List, when posting family lines, would put at least a few given names & maybe some spouses' surnames in the subject line, it would make it a lot easier for new subscribers to search our archives. How about it? Speaking of Family Lines--we have a number of new subscribers now. It would be nice if some of you old-timers (from Oct. &. Nov. 1998) would re-post your family lines again. Who knows--you may have just the family line someone is looking for!! Faith Hutchings Your Listowner faith@verdenet.com

    3. For the new subscribers: Our messages are stored in the archives. To search the archives for your ancestors, just use the address below. Type your ancestor's first (given) name in the query box, click on 1998 (there aren't many in 1999). Then, click on "Remit Query." The messages will be rated in the order of the percentage of closest match to the name you have entered (ie. 100% would be a perfect match). As you scroll down the list, you can read the subject and chose the messages you want to read. Click on "Full" if you want to read the entire message. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=hallman Faith Hutchings Your Listowner/Hostess faith@verdenet.com

    1. Re: Naturalizations
    2. Faith Hutchings
    3. Hello, Hallmans, Re: Edie's list of naturalizations. Connie sent me the information below. I asked her to cut and paste it to a Hallman-L message. She answered that, unfortunately, she had deleted it but gave me permission to copy and paste from her message to me. I thought it would be of interest to the whole group--so here it is below. Faith According to Johni Cerny in "The Library: A Guide to the LDS Family History Library" 1727-1775 the Oaths of Allegiance are listed in the Pennsylvania Archives, Second series 1740-1773 Naturalization lists are published in a book by Linn for the Clearfield Company/Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, MD In 1776 'Aliens' living in Pennsylvania at the time of the Declaration of Independence were automatically naturalized 1776-1794 new arrivals simply took an oath of allegiance, and those are recorded in another publication of the Genealogical Publishing Co. in Baltimore 1793-present -- naturalizations are tracked in various court systems, available in the Supreme Court records While I'm not about to print all 123 pages of the "Persons Naturalized in Pennsylvania 1740-1773, the first page is interesting (and is shared with the original spelling/grammer): "In pursuance of An Act of Parliament made in the thirteenth year of the Reign of his present Majesty King George, the second, Entitled An Act for naturalizing such Foreign Protestants, and others therein mentioned, as are settled or shall settle in any of his majesties Colonies in America. At a Supreme Court held at Phil'd'a for the Province of Pennsylvania, Before Jeremiah Langhorne, Thomas Graeme and Thomas Griffiths, Esqrs, Judges of the said Court, the 25th, 26th & 27th days of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven Hundred & Forty, between the Hours of Nine and Twelve of the Clock in the Forenoon of the same Days, the following person, being Foreigners and having inhabited and resided the space of seven years and upwards in his Majesty's Colonies in America, and not having been absent out of some of the said Colonies for a longer space than two months, at any one time, during the said seven years, and having produced to the said Court Certificates of their having taken the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper in some Protestant or Reformed Congregation in this Province within three months before the said Court, Took & Subscribed the Oaths, and did make, and repeat the Declaration prescribed by the said Act, to entitle them to the Benefit thereof, and thereby became Natural born Subjects of Great Britain, as the same is Certified into this office by the Judges of the said Court." The book then lists the person's name, 'of what place' and the time of taking the Sacrament. (The list submitted by Edie reflects Court activity for Sept 7th, 1740 according to Linn's records) Unfortunately, there are only three Hallman/Heilman entries in the Linn book on Persons Naturalized in PA 1740-1773, so anyone searching that reference should be familiar with collateral names as well - it sure doesn't take long to find the Hallman names.

    3. Thanks, Edie, for this Naturalization List. I understand that before the Rev. War, anyone who was not British arriving in America was considered an alien & had to be naturalized, am I right? This would include all our German/ Swiss ancestors. Faith

Also, Hannah is mentioned in the DAR books, in the lineage of her mother's EVANS family. I'm wondering if connection with EVANs researchers might turn up someone with names of Hannah's parents in their notes?? 2. M. Elaine Jeter
    3. MOST-WANTED: My most-wanted Hallman ancestors are the parents of my Gx2 Grandmother, Hannah Hallman, who married Mahlon Barlow in Montgomery County, PA, on June 1, 1848. Hannah was born on August 2, 1828, and died on September 8, 1903. I believe that she lived her entire life in Limerick Twp., Montgomery County. Hannah (Hallman) and Mahlon Barlow had 8 children: the eldest was my great grandfather, John Franklin Barlow, who was born May 1, 1849, and married Mary M. Clemens, after which they moved to Blackhawk County, Iowa. John Franklin Barlow died there in 1910. I have been looking for Hannah's parents for many months, and am beginning to suspect that she may have been an orphan. <:-) just kidding>. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. 2. Faith Hutchings
    3. Hello, Hallmans, Welcome to our new members! Our list activity has been slow lately. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I'd like to see more participation now. I've been thinking it would be nice to see some short stories related to your Hallman ancestors--funny, sad, or just interesting--on one or more of your Hallman ancestors, or their related families. Of-course, we still want to see your lineage posted, too. If you haven't posted it for a month or so, or if you haven't had replies to your query, post it again. We have some new members so there's a chance one of them might have the information you need. If you can't think of an anecdote about a ancester, how about posting your "MOST WANTED" ancestor--the one you'd like to find his/her birth or death date, his/her parents, etc. You get the gist of it. Hope to see you on-line, Faith Hutchings Your Listowner faith@verdenet.com

    3. This website is worth a look. These two website owners travel through the country and pick up old family Bibles, photos, documents, etc. They have them listed in alpha order on their website. I didn't spot any HALLMAN photos, but you might want to check them out for other ancestors. If you recognize the names of any ancestors in the descriptions of the photos or Bible, they will SELL them to you if you can show proof of relationship. I don't know what they charge but if you find an ancestor's photo, etc., it might be worth it. http://usprs.erinet.com/31363/fordand.htm Faith Hutchings Your Listowner faith@verdenet.com

    3. Hi, all you Hallmans, Rootsweb has been providing FREE access for queries on Surname Lists, FREE websites for amateur genealogists, and they are now teaming up with GenConnect to supply Boards on which ALL (not just subscribers) can post queries. We can also open Boards to post Obits, Cemeteries, etc. I haven't gone into that yet, as I seem to have my hands full with what have now. If any of you are interested in managing a "Board", let me know. When you think about it, nothing really is free. Someone, somewhere is paying for what we receive. The Rootsweb volunteers are giving their time, plus their own money, to give us this service. I don't want any of you to feel you have to support Rootsweb. However, if you feel the service we are getting from them is worth one dollar a month--that's all it takes to become a Contributor. I copied the message below to let you know the seriousness of the situation at this time. Please read it carefully. If you feel you would like to become a Contributor to Rootsweb for service provided, past and future, you can learn more by clicking on the address below. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Thanks so much.
