    1. Re: Names of living persons.
    2. Faith Hutchings
    3. Hi, all Hallmans, This is something I realize I should have posted long ago. As you know, our messages to the list go into the archives which, as far as I know, can still be accessed by non-subscribers. Rootsweb advises us not to post the names and/or addresses of any other living persons in our messages to the lists for that reason. (They, the person whose name & address we post, would not appreciate being targeted by advertisements, I'm sure--let alone other nuisance messages.) You can correspond privately with a "cousin" you've met on the list with a name or address of some "living" person. Rootsweb mail lists are swamped with spams. We can be glad they are weeded out before reaching the lists. I know how many they must receive, because I receive the ones they are not certain are spams, and I get quite a few of those! Sorry, I've been lax in posting this warning. Faith Hutchings Your Listowner (hostess) faith@verdenet.com

    1. William or Billy Hallman
    2. Edward Hagerty
    3. Unfortunately I struck out. There were apparently two actors who went by the name of William Hallman or I should say one was William E. Hallman. As it turns out, "William Hallman" wasn't really a Hallman at all, that was his stage name, his real name was William Van Haley, which sounds like the stage name. The file on William E. Hallman was closed for some reason, so if he is my connection, I'll have to find some other way around that. As for Myra Donnelly, I traveled into New York City only to find out that the file they had, was on an actress of the same name who went to grad school for acting at NYU in 1981. So, what else is new in the world of genealogy. Ed Hagerty

    1. Re: Clues to wife's maiden name
    2. Faith Hutchings
    3. Hi, all, I found this information below on another list & am passing it along to you. Faith Hutchings Tips on finding maiden names from the 1992 Jackson County, Michigan Genealogical Society: Nothing will give greater clues to maiden names than the witnesses to old wills. In the lower left hand corner of most deeds, you will find signatures of two to four witnesses. The first is always from the husband's side. The next is almost always from the wife's side and that is to protect her one-third dower right under law. Mortgages: In the 1800s and before, it was traditional when the daughter married, as part of her dowry, for the father to either cover their mortgage or carry a note for his son-in-law. If you can find to whom their mortgage payments were made, 70% of the time it will be the bride's father.

    3. Hi, all, This list seems to be circulating among the lists, so I thought I might as well copy it for our list. Warning: It's a l-o-n-g one--hard copy prints out to 8 pages so if you want to just delete it--now is the time to do it! It will provide you with links to just about anything you want to find on the Internet. 3. If you want to change from regular mode (HALLMAN-L) to digest mode (HALLMAN-D) where you receive a number messages as an attachment, instead of each one separately, send an e-mail to: HALLMAN-L-request@rootsweb.com and in body of the message type: unsubscribe (This is also the way to unsubscribe--if you so desire.) Then send another message directed to: HALLMAN-D-request@rootsweb.com and in the body of the letter type: subscribe This is a good way to cut down on the volume of messages on every list you belong to. I like it because I can scroll through the subject listings of the messages & if I see one I want to read, I can click on that message to bring it up. Otherwise, I can just delete the entire list with one click. Faith Hutchings Your List Hostess faith@verdenet.com

I have now become an advocate of back up systems. I have nothing to add to the debate of Switzerland v. Germany for Anthony's homeland, however the 1991 edition of the Hallman Family History in Canada contains Anthony's will which I copy here and you can include it on the list or not as you see fit. Anthony Hallman made his will January 25th,1759 and it is recorded in book L., page 301, in the Register of Wills Office on Philadelphia PA. The following is an abstract of the same, giving the important items contained therein: " I hereby disinherit my son John for reasons best known to himself, save one English shilling, to be paid within ten days of my death. I give unto my oldest daughter Dorothy Heizer, wife of John Heizer(Heiser) the sum of 500 pounds. I give unto my second daughter Christiana Leffeber(Lefeber) the sum of 500 pounds. I give unto my third daughter Catharine Kressman (wife of John Cressman) 500 pounds. I give unto my three grandsons Leonard,Valentine & George, my daughter Mary Salome Perkymer's children (Berkheimer) the sum of 1 pound 13 shillings & 4 pence. I give unto my daughter Barbara Jacobs the sum of 5 pounds. I give unto my youngest daughter Anna Marie Ketchy, the minister's wife (Rev. John Henry Goetschius) the sum of 5 pounds. I give unto my youngest son Henry Hallman all my household goods, chattels, husbandry implements, &c., also my land in Skippack, about 150 acres ". His son Henry Hallman was appointed sole executor of the estate under the will. The witnesses to the will were Deter Melchior, Jacob ? and Charles Cornelius Raboteau. The will was probated August 3rd 1759. Best wishes Marilyn Mills

    3. Thanks, Marie. If anyone would know where Anthony was born, other than the immediate family, it would be Pastor Muhlenberg, as he was the pastor of Augustus Lutheran Church at the time Anthony Hallman was a member. Clark Hallman also wrote to me that Anthony was born in Kleinniedesheim (my spelling from Germany map on Internet). Clark didn't give his source, but maybe it was the same as Marie's. Do we have any other opinions out there? I'd still like to know where the rest of the Canadian descendants received information on Anthony's birthplace? I admit that mine came from my grandfather's (H. S. Hallman's) book and it is likely he had the wrong information. Did your information come from the same source? Faith Hutchings faith@verdenet.com

    3. The information given to me, Anthony was born in 1671 in Klein, Neidersheim, Palatinate, Germany and died 16 July 1759 in Skippack, Philadelphia, PA. This was also given as the birthplace of Maria Salome. The source is from the Journal's of Pastor H.M. Muhlenberg, pastor of the Augustus Lutheran Church at Trappe, PA. If anyone has access to these Journals would you see if this can be verified? My connection to Antonius Hallman and Maria Salome is by their dau. Dorothea m. Johannes Heizer; their son Valentine and ???; their son John Heizer m. Elizabeth Mowry; their son Jesse Heizer m. Catherine Drake; their dau. Mary Heizer m. Wylie Bole; Their dau. Kate Bole m. Clement Maurice Copas who were my grandparents. Marie mtaylor@vvm.com

    3. Hi, Hallmans! Are any of you still out there? No-one on this list seems to have any information or even opinion on where Anthony was born?? Or if he/she does have an opinion--I haven't seen it on the list! I'd like to see all our new subscribers' family lines. If you haven't posted them already, please do post them for us. It would be nice if some of you who haven't posted your family lines for a couple months--and I didn't recently send them through--would post your lines again. I'm sorry, I wanted to save all our list's family lineages that were posted, but I had a guy working on my computer a month ago and he deleted some I had saved, so I don't have them all, now. Thanks, Faith Hutchings Your List Hostess faith@verdenet.com

    3. Hello, all, I'm tossing this out in the ring. Was Anthony Hallman born in Switzerland, as most Canadian descendants believed, or was he born in Germany? My thoughts have turned to this because a few days ago I was reading the family history of another ancestor of mine, Jacob Tschantz (Shantz). Jacob was born in Switzerland. The manuscript "Descendants of Jacob Shantz" says that the little that is recorded of Jacob states that he came originally from Switzerland and that, prior to his leaving for America, he resided for about fifteen years in Holland; that he was born about 1710 and that he came to the United States (the Colonies) on a boat named Townshead in 1737...Additional information was discovered in 1924 by Dr. Homer Leroy Shantz while he was attending a botanical congress in the city of Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Shantz visited the Staats House, where he found, among the old emigration records, the following interesting information: STAATSARCHIVE, BERNE LITERALLY TRANSLATED Rodel Weggenogener Manrechten Jacob Tschanz Asked of the Tschanz, Jacob, aus dem amt thun Authorities in Berne, Permission des Manrecht Wegzuzuchen Berwilliget to Emigrate, which was Dem 9, Februarius, 1737 granted. (end of quote) It seems to me that most of our Canadian descendants believed that Anthony was born in Switzerland. Was this a tradition passed down from generation to generation, or is it because Henry S. Hallman made that assertion in his "History of the Hallman Family in Canada" and it was picked up and quoted by Joan Hallman in her book, "Hallman Family History in Canada?" I'd like to hear from you Canadian descendants--where did you first hear that Anthony was born in Switzerland? If it was a family tradition--why hasn't it been passed down through the U. S. descendants? I haven't heard any U.S. descendants say they believed that Anthony was born in Switzerland. We have at least one Hallman on our list, whose ancestor was definitely from Switzerland. He arrived a little later than Anthony to the Colonies, and went South to a Swiss settlement in South Carolina. I'd like to hear what the rest of you (Anthony Hallman) descendants think. Get your messages in to our List so we can discuss this. If ANYONE at all has some proof one way or the other on this, let us know. Thanks, Faith

    3. This is Diane's Hallman line: Hi I am doing research for my sons on their paternal lines. They are descended from Anthony Hallman thru his daughter Dorothy. She married Johannes Heizer. They had son Valentine Heizer. We don't know his 1st wifes name, but they had John Heizer who married Elizabeth Mowery... their son Jesse Heizer married Catherine Drake. Jesse's daughter Nancy married Nelson Cahall in Brown Co, Ohio.

    3. Hi Hallman's: I copied this from another mailing list: Found this on another list and wanted to forward to those of us who have limited "free time" for microfilm reading and can't seem to adhere to nor handle a two-week loaner period. :-) <<Microfilm census and soundexes can be obtained from "Census Microfilm Rental Program, P.O.
