What part of Canada did they migrate to? Mary

I'm interested in Halligan's from Canada. My family supposively came from Ireland to Canada to Ohio. My gr gr grandfather was also a John Halligan (wife Mary Greene/Greenan/Greenen). The earliest I can find the family in Ohio is the 1890's and I believe I did find John in Ohio as early as the 1860's, found in a directory listed as a soldier. Haven't found them on any censuses before 1900 though. I heard the Halligan's had something to do with horses when they were in Canada. Any info would be appreciated.
