My great grandfather, John Patrick Halligan (1833-1881) was from Co. Cork and came to America around 1862. John came over alone (as far as I know). He was shipbulder. He married Alice Burns in 1865 in Mobile, AL. and fathered five children - Josephine, Maggie, Albert Sidney, Robert Lee, and Edmund. The name on Albert's baptismal certificate is Albert Sidney Lyons Halligan. I have no idea where the Lyons name came from. Edmund died as a baby. Josephine and Maggie were sent back to Ireland around the early 1880's, when Alice (d. 1883) and John (d. 1881) died. Robert and Albert (my grandfather, who was five years old at time) were raised by their mother's relatives. Robert later died without marrying. Albert married Johanna Coffee in New York City around 1910. Maggie and Josephine visited New York City for their brother's wedding. There are a number of brick walls on my Halligan side as many records seem to be missing and very little information was passed on because my grandfather was so young when his parents died.
