I'm trying to find out where (in Ireland) William Halligan and Margaret ( Carey ) Halligan came from. They came via England. They were married in St. Paul's Cathedral, here in Pittsburgh. I'm also looking for other Halligans related to me. I know that there are a lot of us here in Pittsburgh.

Most of them went to Lincolnshire, England in the mid 1850s and then two brothers went off to Queensland and America from there. I have not located the one one who came to America but I'm thinking his name might be James. His father would have been Patrick. All the Halligans gave their boys the same names through each generation so it's a bit difficult to sort them out. I have no idea if any of this information connects with what you know but it was worth a try. Carol
Do you know which city your St. Mary's cemetery is in? Ours is Peoria, IL. Our Halligans came to Peoria through New Orleans in the early 1850's. We have several Thomas & Anna Halligans... I'm not sure how to connect yours to ours. I'll check our records. Edward & Margeret would have surnames of Casey, correct? I do think that the recurrance of names is indicative of family relations. Hugh and Jim plus others are in my line. I know County Mayo, but not where at all. I just found out today that my grandfather's father's name was John Halligan and his mother was Winnefred (Mary) like my Aunt. There is a tendency to name children after siblings. Thanks, I'll see what I can did up.

He was born around 1890 and came to the United States around 1916. It was my great-grandmother, Bridget Delia Lavin, who was born in Kiltimagh, County Mayo, Ireland. She also was born in the 1890s and came to the US at the same time.

Hugh and Jim were very popular names in my family. My great-grandfather was born about 1890 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo, so it is possible that your grandfather could be an uncle or maybe an older cousin. Do you know where his family was from in Ireland? That would be a big help. Also, if you know they came to NY, I would check www.ellisisland.org for ship manifests. There are two main Halligan families in Charlestown, but I am sure that they are related. Let me know how you make out and if I can help.

What part of Canada did they migrate to? Mary
I'm interested in Halligan's from Canada. My family supposively came from Ireland to Canada to Ohio. My gr gr grandfather was also a John Halligan (wife Mary Greene/Greenan/Greenen). The earliest I can find the family in Ohio is the 1890's and I believe I did find John in Ohio as early as the 1860's, found in a directory listed as a soldier. Haven't found them on any censuses before 1900 though. I heard the Halligan's had something to do with horses when they were in Canada. Any info would be appreciated. I've been told that William came over to Canada at the same time and travelled on to Western Canada and was not heard from again. If anyone has any info on him I would appreciate hearing from them.
