I am trying to track down descendants of Captain Joseph HALLIGAN, who went down on the ship "Ira H. Owen" in the Great Storm of 1905 on Lake Superior. Joseph was ill and my gg uncle Capt. Thomas HONNER took over the mastering of the ship for his friend. Joseph was still onboard when they went out. Both were lost. I believe Joseph and John were brothers. Joseph was born 1949 in Ireland and lived in Buffalo, NY in 1900, with wife Jemmie(?) and children Frank, Grace, and Harry. Frank was just visiting home in 1900 because he was crewing on the steamer "James H. Gratwich" out of Duluth in June of that year. Have you heard of a brother Joseph at all? Recently I have been going through an old box of papers belonging to my grandmother. I found, to my surprise, a Certificate of Baptism for a Michael Halligan. Here are the details: Church of St. John's Catholic Church Stamford, Connecticut "That Michael Halligan Child of James Halligan and Bridget Fitzpatrick Born on the 2nd day of July 1886 was Baptized On the 4th day of July 1886 By the Rev. T.J. Keena The Sponsors being Patrick Fitzpatrick and Sara Fitzpatrick As appears from the Baptismal Register of this Church Dated Nov. 24, 1950 /s/ M.P. Coleman, Pastor >From a search of the Social Security Death Index I found a Thomas Halligan born on the same above date who died February 1974 in Mesquite, Clark, Nevada. Is he the same person as Michael Halligan? Can't tell if he had any family or not. If there is a descendant for Michael Halligan, I can send this record [plus a letter that was found with it] to them. He is not related to me and I have no idea how it ended up in this box. I look forward to hearing from someone. Martha.

Author: concnn Surnames: Halligan Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.halligan/52.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kaylexa - I have the following narrative from a family researcher who did this work many years ago: "Daniel A. Halligan, with his younger brother, Christopher, both very young men, mere boys in fact, crossed the North American continent with ox team caravan to seek their fortune in the gold hills of California. After acquiring their desired amount of yellow gold, returned home in a sailing boat around the horn of South America and back to New York City. While making the trip westward from Anamosa, Iowa, the two boys met up with and became very good friends of both "Buffalo Bill" Cody and "Wild Bill" Hiccock. Daniel, after his marriage to Catherine Durigan, farmed near the monestary located southeast of Dubuque, Iowa. In 1889, he moved to Fort Ddoge, Iowa, and bought a large tract of land nine miles west of Fort Ddoge, starting in the cattle feeding business, retiring from active business in 1908, mving into Fort Dodge." Makes me think that there might be some connection between Patrick/Thomas and Daniel/Christopher Halligan boys. What do you think? Dear List, My name is Al Dawson (Microfish7@aol.com) I'm posting this to the Halligan list (and will post it on the Hallinan list as well. For many years I believed my great-great-grandmother, born in Ireland c. 1826, was an O'HOLLERAN, based on death certificate information from her daughter, my great-grandmother. Now two sources for one of her other daughters, Ellen, one a death certificate and the other a more reliable note from a wedding registration, indicate HALLIHAN was the proper surname. I've found that the town of Ballincollig, wes of Cork, has that surname. Margaret is married and in Canada by 1844 (so missed the Famine) William Carr (Husband) b. I don't have a John Patrick Halligan in my line. I have a John Aloysius, and a Patrick A., and they all settled in Minnesota and South Dakota. They are sons of James Halligan, born 12 May 1825, and Catherine McCauley , born 26 March, 1830. Place of birth Drogheda, Ireland. This doesn't seem to be a match. However, if you can link them to your line I would like to share our files.
