He had no brother but a 1932 BD of John would be chronologically correct. Also interesting to me is the name John; while common, all the Halligan men in my family back to the 1830's as far as I can track, have either the names John, William or James as a first or middle name. My middle name is John. I know there are many Halligan's on the eastern seaboard, and I wish you luck. Could you let me know if you find anything of this man? Thanks so much. They also lived nearby the Prendergrasts in Illinois according to censuses. I came into contact with a woman that was heavily researching these two families and she claimed that the Halligans and the Prendergrasts were very entwined all the way back to Ireland in County Mayo. The two families can be seen inter-marrying frequently. I will try to look for the information she sent me and let you know if you are still interested. Please let me know. Thanks and best of luck. Your grandfather James' parents were Dominic Rowan and Ellen Dony. Dominic came from Kilmactigue, Ireland and Ellen came from Castlemartyr, County Cork. I am descended from Patrick Rowan (also spelled Rouane or Ruane early on.) I believe him to be Dominic's brother, but I can't say for sure. Patrick and all his children except one seem to have gone to New York in 1885. Dominc seems to have come to Dewsbury first and Patrick to have followed. I believe their parents were named Patrick and Winifred. They had a sister named Winifred who married a Halligan. What do you think? Look forward to hearing from you, Pauline Rowan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have one tidbit of information concerning John P. Halligan, and if you are still researching, please reply. I have a Confederate States bond or certificate receipt made out to Jno. P. Halligan in Feb 1864 in Richmond VA by the Acting Treasurer, Confederate States. It is endorsed over to a James Burns in June 1864, with Notary Public authentication of signatures in Montgomery AL and then in Mobile AL. James Burns may be related to Alice L. My in-laws are descendants of Mary Halligan and Daniel Mahoney. Daniel and Mary settled in the Dubuque, IA area and had 13 children. One of the sons (John C.) married Mary Burds and they had 10 children. Two of their sons married two sisters and moved to Detroit, MI. I just recently started looking into the Halligan connection, but someone else had told me that Patrick Halligan married Mary McKenna, so now I need to do some more digging because that conflicts with what you posted. I did find that Patrick married Catherine Fay on 10 Oct 1854 in Grant Co, WI, but since he was 25 years older I thought it was a second marriage. Also the 1880 census confirms that he and Catherine had 4 sons (James, Daniel, John and Joseph). Send me an email at laschaef@hotmail.com or reply to this post if you're still looking.
