Author: RowanRowan Surnames: Ruan, Rowan, Griffin, Halligan Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.halligan/80.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Oh, that does sound promising! The Ruans and Griffins lived on the same street when they left Ireland for England. They settled in Dewsbury, Yorkshire for about 20 years and then my Ruans (now Rowans) and at least one Halligan (who was marred to Winifred Ruan/Rowan) moved to New York City with a brief stop first in Patterson, NJ. I have lots more information now then when I first posted on this board, but there are still a lot of holes, too! Right now I am working on a tentative lead that the Ruans in Dewsbury came from a Kiltimagh in Ireland. Look forward to hearing from you! They have intermarried for generations. My mother's name was Winifred Mary Griffin. They all lived between Lincs.& Yorks. for a while until one or two left for the U.S. and Australia. My G g grandmother was Catherine Ruan (Royan) who married Miles Halligan. I have to pull out my info and look but I'm thinking maybe John is the brother of Miles, Patrick etc. who left for New York. Found article in Interlake newspaper (North Montana). Gave names of his parents, the fact that he was one of family of ten, was from Athlone, Ireland and his DOB. Found the family in 1901 census and was able to make the connection to our family tree. Sometimes you get lucky. Thanks for the offer of assistance. Found an article in the Internal Lake newspaper (Montana) which said the Monsignor was born in Athlone to a Patrick Halligan and Ellen Galvin, one of a family of ten. I found this family in the 1901 census. They were from a townsland in South Roscommon just west of Athlone Michael Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: javatestcase Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.halligan/80.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Michael, That's great! How interesting that a picture helped you make this connection. I'd love a copy of the picture if you can make a digital image, I don't know if I have one. The Monsignor James J. Halligan was my Great Grand Uncle. My mother remembers him, he lived until 1971, he baptized her and he married my grandparents (and probably most of the Halligan ceremonies in the NYC area). His brothers had many children, and there are many cousins out there I have met online. The Monsignor also served as the chaplain to the "Lost Battalion" in WWI, there is some text about his experience here: http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/history/upton/miles16.htm It's unlikely your Mary was his sister. He did have an older sister Mary Ellen... but she came with the family to the US and passed away in 1928. We do know the Monsignors parents (John Halligan and Winifred Rowan) were from Mayo. The Monsignor's father John had a brother Hugh born in Kilbeagh in 1856 (and possibly other siblings) could that be the relation? We also know his grandparents (John Halligan and Eleanor Gannon married in Kilmovee in 1839) were from Mayo, but don't know any of their other children... Anyway, I'd be happy to share anything that will help you identify your Mary Halligan. What do you know so far? Any dates, or places?
