My grandfather, Stephen Hall (b. 1871), always contended that our family was Scots-Irish, but we have no hard evidence to confirm the family tradition. We are deeply grateful to a descendant of William Hall, who submitted DNA (FTDNA #83216) for analysis, and has been shown to belong to the "I1a" haplogroup, which could be consistent with a heritage in the British Isles, since many migrants to Britain came from northern and northwestern Europe -- some of them with Viking history. "Scotch-Irish" has been casually used by many people over many years so that, despite any true definition of the term, its meaning has been muddied by mis-use. We don't know exactly what Grandpa meant. Our William Hall is not well-documented during his pre-marriage years. We have surmised that he was born around 1755-1758, in the region of MD/PA/VA, but we have no concrete evidence of his birthplace. William is listed in "Roster Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Indiana", Compiled and Edited by Mrs. Roscoe C. O'Byrne; Published by IN DAR 1938: "Hall, William b. 1754; d. 4/15/1844; bur. Demaree's graveyard, Government marked erected in Manville Cemetery; m. 1781, Sarah ____, d. 1851" Although we cannot document exactly where he lived when he was recruited for the Pennsylvania Line, he was mustered out of his last service at Fort Pitt. William Hall enlisted in a company commanded by Capt. Swearingin in the 18th Regiment of the Pennsylvania line for 18 months. He had been at the battles of Bunker Hill, White Plains, Fort Washington, Fort Lee, Trenton, and Brandywine and Paoli, under a former enlistment. He served with Captain Long, in the 5th Pennsylvania. Regiment Continental Army. It's good to remember that this entire PA/VA/MD thing near the borders is really sticky until after the Revolution. When a PA recruiter came to get men for the military, they would tell him that they were from VA, or MD, and vice-versa. sometimes they didn't even know, themselves. In addition, Swearingen was known to have recruited troops from some considerable distance from the organization-point in southwestern Pennsylvania. William's pension file indicates that certain information was taken from a family bible, which seems to have disappeared. In an affidavit, William Hall swore on 15 Apr. 1835 in support of Levi House’s Revolutionary War pension application that he had known House since he (William) was 13 or 14 years old, which would have been around 1770, give or take a year or two. Levi House was the son of John Valentine House, companion of noted trader Israel Friend. The elder House lived in and around Frederick Co MD and Frederick Co VA into the late 1760s. Our William Hall was married to Sarah, whose surname remains unknown. Sarah is enumerated in 1850, at age 95, in the household of her son-in-law, Christian Bear, in Milton Twp, Jefferson Co IN, page 387/194. That entry notes her birthplace as Maryland. We can't be sure when they were married, because no known document exists, beyond an unproven, perhaps coincidental listing, between a William Hall and Sarah, in "Central Pennsylvania Marriages 1700-1896", compiled by Charles A. Fisher (Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc) William is noted as being from "(8th Pa.)" -- perhaps a misprint for "18th". Although there are several mentions of William Halls in Kentucky during the last two decades of the 1700s, it's difficult to document that it's specifically our William Hall in Mercer, Franklin, or Shelby counties. Certainly, the 1850 census indicates that William and Sarah's eldest son, John, was born in 1781 in Kentucky, as do his children who survived until the 1880 census, but we've seen many instances of errors in such enumerations. For example, several of Squire Hall's (b.1789) children report that he was born in Indiana -- not likely, since the earliest that these Halls might possibly have been in Indiana would have been 1803. Does anyone have any more solid information concerning when William and Sarah came to Kentucky? Is there any document other than the census to indicate where John, Ellender, and Squire Hall were born? Much evidence of William Hall and his family have survived from the 1800s, but we are currently concerned about discovering William's birthplace and marriage, as well as the surname of his wife, Sarah. I am grateful to other generous researchers who have pursued this family and shared their information -- Ethel Hall Patrick (my late mother), Mr. Ben Hall, Ms. Corinne Hanna, and the astute scholar of southeastern Indiana genealogy, Mr. Bob Scott, among many others.
