Hello everyone, I am very disappointed that there is still flaming going on against me. I do not have to explain myself to you. All List Managers are volunteers. We are not paid for being list manager, and I would not want to get paid for it. We do not have to take verbal abuse from list members, and I will not tolerate any more flaming, either against me personally or against any other member. If this does not stop, I will have to put the list on Moderated status. To Nel and everyone else who has written to me supporting me, I thank you very much. I would suggest that if you are not happy with the list, then maybe you should unsubscribe. One or 2 people cannot rule a list, and I will not stand for any more flaming. I had explained why I changed my mind about letting DNA being discussed. I would also suggest that before you hit the send button, please re-read what you have written to make sure that it is not flaming. Now let's get back to researching our HALL'S! Charlotte, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank you for graciously sharing your time and efforts for the administration of the Hall mailing list. Your unending patience and willingness to provide subscriber support is greatly appreciated as is all of the RootsWeb staff. You have done a wonderful job of administering the Hall mail list. By now, you may be feeling just a bit overwhelmed. Remember to take it slow and communicate with subscribers on the mailing list where everyone can learn and be kept informed. I greatly appreciate your change of position regarding DNA discussion. Please, keep up the good work. I would also like to thank all the subscribers who graciously share their time, their resources and their knowledge of the Hall family. You are very dedicated to making the Hall mailing list a useful and pleasant experience. My knowledge of the Hall family wouldn't be what it is without you. Other members may send messages known as flames which are meant to express an opposing view or reprimand someone who has done something that is considered inappropriate by other users. To avoid being flamed, be sure to check your communications for clear content, spelling and punctuation. Avoid topics and discussions that may be controversial in nature. Do not do any name-calling and do not use any negatively charged words. Never assume anything about other subscribers on the mailing list. Here is an example that illustrates why this is important. One person chastised another subscriber because he asked for someone to look up something in a reference book. This person told the other that if he doesn't own that reference book himself, he should learn to go to a library rather than have others do his research for him. The person who had asked the original favor informed the other that he was unable to do this because of physical disabilities. Don't assume that everyone else on a mailing list can do the same things that you are able to do. Don't assume that they have the same understanding or knowledge of any given topic. When all else fails, give the other subscribers the benefit of the doubt until you have all the facts in any given situation. Always keep in mind that you are corresponding with real, live people and not just a faceless computer. Basic rules of common courtesy still apply. Remember to treat people with the same courtesy and respect with which you wish to be treated yourself. Like all technology, the Hall mailing list is not perfect, nor will you be able to do all your genealogical research with the click of a mouse. Nevertheless, Hall mailing list participation will allow you to discover Hall family genealogical information, resources and finding aids. Nel Hatch is an incredible inspiration as she works tirelessly to provide the Hall genealogical community with invaluable DNA research information and tools to show us how we can make DNA a tremendous research instrument. My knowledge of Hall family DNA wouldn't be what it is today without Nel. The explosion of DNA data on the Internet did not begin with a big bang. Rather, like wet kindling, it took a while for the spark to catch and finally hiss and sputter into existence. I'm looking forward to it becoming a roaring fire, blazing across the world leaping artificial boundaries. I would also like to remind you of another Hall research resource. I administer the Hall message board ( http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hall/mb.ashx?view=boards ). Charlotte has agreed to have the message board gatewayed or mirrored to the mailing list as soon as RootsWeb opens the gateway. This means that the same message posts will appear in both places, so that you may have twice as much exposure for any information or queries that you post. You have two options for the format in which you receive your mailing list messages. You can receive the messages in single or (combined) digest mode. The digest is a group of email messages that is put together by the mailing list software program and sent to you in one long message. If you prefer to limit your e-mail volume, the digest mode would be the preferable method. You may wish to change your subscription. The ability to exchange and share helpful information on a global scale and to explore vast new databases, as well as obscure factoids lurking at the edges of cyberspace is what the Hall mailing list is all about! The Hall mailing list and all of your friendship is treasured! Thank you so much if you read this all the way down to here. I apologize for the length of this message. Please feel free to contact me privately at [email protected] , if you prefer. You may wish to thank Charlotte also. Thanks again Charlotte!
