    3. I've found that some of the things they keep silent about are so strange, too. My father dropped out of school at 15. The explanation was that by that time, his father was gone and he had to support his mother and sisters. Since "gone" was a polite way of saying dead, I always assumed that his death date was approximately the time of the first world war. That coupled with a sword my father had from "Grandfather Hall", I concluded that my grandfather was possibly a soldier who died in the first world war; that would explain the lack of grave marker in the Hall family plot. A friend also into genealogy was looking for obits in a local collection. She noticed an obit, dated 1932, with someone with the same name as my grandfather. Turns out, it WAS my grandfather. He was gone, as in deserted the family. My father made my mother promise never to tell. In both the 1920 census and his obit, my grandfather lists he is married. Grandmother lists divorced as her marital status in 1920. It was just not the marital status that was a problem; I think it was the fact he was a scoundel.
