    1. [HALL] Roberta - Here is my "brick wall"
    2. Here is my brick wall. Any ideas or anyone else researching Halls in Hardin County Kentucky, I would love to correspond with. I am working on proving the parents of "my" John P. Hall, finding the parents of his wife Sarah and trying to find out Ignatius Hall's parents. This has been a 15 year quest, LOL John P. (possibly Peas) Hall born 1843 (according to several years of census records, but we know how accurate those can be), all his census records, including the early ones when he and his wife were still living in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky say he was born in Kentucky. J.P. as he as known, married Sarah A. (whose single sister is named Matilda Morton, I have searched every census state and federal as well as Kentucky records to find a Morton family with daughters Matilda and Sarah to no avail, so frustrating!). I did finally find a Marriage license for them - John P. Hall married Miss Sarah Morton 31 May 1864 in Hardin County Kentucky. The Certificate lists him as J.P. Hall with witnesses Igna. Hall and ? L. May. This helps to support my theory below about Ignatius being John's father. In the 1880 census of Elizabethtown, Hardin Co. KY, J.P. and Sarah have two children, George b. 1867 in KY and Barney Edward (my gggrandfather) b. 1870 in KY. Barney was married in Alexander County Illinois (on the Kentucky border) in 1894. J.P. and Sarah appear in the 1900 census in Alexander County, and I have found several references in various books about Alexander County to J.P. and "Grandma" Hall as J.P. also served as one of the first Justices of the Peace for Olive Branch, Illinois. J.P. died sometime between this 1900 census and the next as Sarah is listed as a widow in that one, with her two grandchildren from George living with her. Family lore says J.P. was buried in Olive Branch, cannot find a record of that. A cousin gave me info from another cousin who says he died in South Bend Indiana, cannot find record of that either and I have found numerous errors in that data. Despite searching in three states cannot find a death certificate. Olive Branch is a tiny town and it is a distance from any other towns and so there was no newspaper records that I could find. Cannot find the burial site for Sarah either, although my older Great-Aunts think they are buried in unmarked graves in Olive Branch, in a small cemetery where I have not been able to find records kept so that turned out to be my best guess. Decided to try to find parents so, I searched every Hall family in Hardin County Kentucky and found the following closest match. Ignatius Hall family in Elizabethtown, Hardin County. Ignatius was born about 1816 in KY, wife Elizabeth, had several children, among them John P. Hall born about 1843. They appear in the 1850/1860/1870 census records, John with them in 1850 and 1860. This is just a lead as it is the only John P. in Elizabethtown with the right birth date, but it would jive with the witness of an Igna. Hall on J.P.'s Marriage Certificate to Sarah. I cannot find any mention of Halls in county or city histories. I should add, I have exhausted all avenues that I know of, been researching this dead end off and on for 17 years now. Ancestry.com, all online Hardin County Genealogy sites (google, Cyndi's list, Elizabethtown, Rootsweb, Genweb, Kindred Trails, etc.) I've exhausted the Genealogy section of the St Louis Library, all libraries in Alexander County Illinois, all my cousins and Aunts. Hardin County just added some wonderful databases to their official website and found the marriage certificate there. My last shot was hoping someone else had run across this name in their research in Kentucky or Southern Illinois. thanks Denise MSA **************Know Your Numbers: Get tips and tools to help you improve your credit score. 1. [HALL] William HALL born 1815 in France
    2. t.1
    3. Hi, Does anyone have any information on, or connection to, William Hall, born around 1815 in France (my ggg gf). According to 1851 and 1861 censuses, he was born in France but was a British Subject. Can't find him in 1841. 1851 census shows him as a Master Butcher in Salford Lancashire, the family are butchers in Salford for the next 3 generations: William m Mary HILL, children: Joseph (b 1835), James, Beasley, William, George. Joseph m Ellen ARMSTRONG, children: William (b 1856), Mary, Thomas, Ellen, James Beazley. William m Mary Ann LEATHLEY, children: Joseph Leathley, Walter Stanley (b 1891), James Beasley, William, Ellen, Annie, Thomas, Ethel. Curious as to what his parents were doing in France during the Napoleonic war period, as I can't find any birth details in the military records. Does anyone know any other sources of overseas births I could use ? thanks Tim Hall

    1. [HALL] Benjamin Hall
    2. Grace Upshaw
    3. I believe my Benjamin Hall, who died 1803, Halifax C0., Va., was the son of a John Hall, who died circa 1778, leaving a minor child, Mildred, whose guardianship papers are in the court records of Halifax Co., Va. When the estate was finally settled there were 3 heirs: my Benjamin, Mildred and her guardian: James Purcell. Probably James inherited in lieu of his wife, Elizabeth. I know nothing about this John Hall. Where did he live before his death? No will has ever surfaced. I do not know where Benjamin lived before appearing in Halifax Co., Va. 1765 witnessing a deed. I do not know when or where Benjamin married Wilmouth Irby, daughter of Anthony Irby. Benjamin left three sons: William who lived in Pittsylvania Co., Va; John Robins who moved his family to Tennessee; and Thomas who remained in Halifax where he died 1853. William married Sally Dillard and had at least one son, Benjamin, who married Martha Walrond and moved to Ballard C. Ky. I know about John Robins, for he is my ancestor. Thomas married Kitty Yeates and had several daughters and one son: Alexander T. Thomas married 2nd Nancy Tucker and had 3 sons: Henry,Albert and Jackson V., plus several daughters. Perhaps someone knows about William and Thomas and could share some answers to the questions in paragraph one. The DNA for Benjamin is family #11 in Family Tree DNA web site, the Hall program. There are 2 close matches; however those descendants do not go back as far as my Benjamin, so we are at a standstill. Any help greatly apprecisted. Grace Hall Upshaw

    3. Nel, Everyone, I am sure, very much appreciates what you have done to start this project and bring it to where it is today. I know that I do. I would like to suggest that maybe someone from the list would be interested in joining as a co-administrator for the specific purpose of communicating with the list what is being found and what family lines need additional members. Hall is one of the largest surnames in America and throughout the English speaking world. In some respects, you almost need specific helpers who can focus on specific groups of Hall families -- not just a single family -- and try to get a handle on those families. I think that the project has a good start, and what we are seeing is the basis for years of research. I would hope that the members would feel safe in communicating on list when they get a result to understand what it means and what they should do next in their research. This is no different that when you discover a new paper trail source that gives you a result you do not understand and would like help interpreting it. As a follow-up to Roberta's note, I do think that discussion of DNA findings, both positive and negative is worthwhile on this list. If you find that your Hall family seems to have a STRONG ( close 37 or 67 marker match) match to some other family, then we would like to hear about it. It could be that someone else on this list may have a clue as to why that happened. Yes, it could be an NPE (non-paternity event). DNA just discovered in my Stedman project that two large Stedman families that were thought to be part of a large Scottish family were actually not. It is generating a lot of new interest in the DNA because many people's assumptions of their ancestry is proving wrong. As we learn more about DNA, we learn how powerful it can be. ... as Roberta and Cheryl found out. (BTW, if you want to consult off-list on this unexpected match, just write...) john. 3. My Hall brick wall is Benjamin Hall of Halifax Co., Va. He is in family #11 of Family Tree DNA, with two non-exact matches. The problem there is that the 2 semi-matches do not extend back as far as my Benjamin (he died 1803). The other 2 Hall researchers are stuck and not very active in their research, I assume. My Benjamin had 3 sons: 1. John Robins Hall moved his family to Carroll Co. & Weakley Co., Tn. 2. William lived in Pittsylvania Co., Va. and had at least one son: Benjamin, who married Martha Walrond, and moved to McCrackin/Ballard Co., Ky. William may have had other ch. who stayed in Pittsylvania Co., Va. 3. Thomas did remain in Halifax Co., Va. marrying twice: (1) Kitty Yeates with children: Susan; Chloe Irby; Mildred R.; Sarah; & Alexander T. (2) Nancy Tucker with children: Henry; Albert; Lucy; & Jackson V. I am hoping that someone from Pittsylvania and /or Halifax Co. Va. will recognize these Halls and share information with me. Circa 1778, John Hall died and the guardianship papers for his minor child, Mildred, are found in the court papers of Halifax, with James Purcell being the guardian. When the estate was finally settled there were 3 heirs of this John Hall: James Purcell (probably in lieu of his wife, Elizabeth), Mildred the minor child and my Benjamin Hall. It is assumed John Hall was the father of Mrs. James Purcell(Elizabeth), Mildred and Benjamin Hall. So far, I have not found where John Hall lived before his death. No will has surfaced anywhere that I can find. I do not know where Benjamin lived before 1765 when he witnessed a deed in Halifax Co. I do not know when or where he married Wilmouth Irby, daughter of Anthony Irby. Wilmouth fied 1808 in Halifax county. Any help or clues greatly appreciated. Just give me the CD# and a persons name and I will see if I can help. I was just talking to Cheryl about a roll call. The list is quiet and leads have dried up. If anyone has anything new out there I would love to hear it. In mine and Cheryl's case....Cheryl had a cousin of hers ( a known cousin) take the DNA test. To our surprise the DNA came back and was not a exact match to her as we expected it to be instead it was an exact match to me, my first exact 64 marker match in our family group #6. Do we know what it means. NOOOOOOOOOO! This ends up in the technical DNA mutation category which I don't think others on the list what to hear about. I sure would like to know what it means. I am also dropping my pursuit on the information Mr. Lew Lessler wrote about on the lineage of Jacob and Mary Charlesworth Hall. Unless someone from this line has done a DNA test to prove otherwise I believe Mr. Lessler attached my John and Mary Clayton Hall to this line by mistake. No proof has been found to confirm his theory and with our family # 6 history it appears the two line are not related, at least in my opinion. If something comes up to the contrary than I will look further into it. Anyone else out there willing to tell us what they have going on or stuck on? Nel does not even seem to be getting much new to report on the DNA project front. ;-) I could request a roll call to see if that will get some of the people lurking on the list to contribute. But the last time I did that it seemed that just the usual suspects bothered to pipe up. Maybe... what we are doing is enough for everyone... On some of my other lists, I encourage folks who have made a discovery, that they send me privately, to send the information to the list. The reason is that by sending it to the list, the data will get archived in the list archives for others to find. And maybe it will be the clue that breaks through someone's brick wall. I have an active Hall line that I do research from time to time, but Hall is not the center of my research universe. [I am still looking for a descendant of Thomas Hall (or one of his brothers...) and Elizabeth Sloan from Iredell county, North Carolina, to join the DNA project...] So... 1. [HALL] Admin Message - Thanks to Cheryl and Roberta!
    2. John Lisle
    3. Hi, Please let me personally and pubicly thank Roberta and Cheryl for the efforts that they have done to respond to a list member's request. Their actions are what I would like to see more of on this list. It would seem that this list is busy with lots of notes gateway'ed from the message board, but the list members have been exceptionally quiet. I know there are hundreds of you out there ... I do not have a lot of research discoveries to report, as others might. But, please, share with us how this list and community can serve you better. thanks, john.
