I guess I need to post my one little lonely but important Hall name as I have been on here lurking for over a week now. Angeline Hall, b. 1848, in possibly Iowa married Thomas (according to the death certificate) or W.H. (according to the funeral home) Porter. This is my gg-grandmother and this is all I have. They did have children: William, b. 1864 in Des Moines, Iowa; Rose Ella, b. 1870 in Iowa; James R.; and Jane Porter. I cannot find a record of their marriage. This family always said they were Cherokee, but how the Cherokee got to Iowa during this time frame leaves me to wonder. Also, I cannot find them on census reports. And also, if you were a bootlegger would you be on the run so much that you wouldn't ever make it on a census? This is something I am beginning to wonder about. I do have a Porter picture and it appears that they had themselves a nice little business going. Does anyone else have Halls in Iowa or native American Halls or a Hall that was a little bit of a blacksheep? <VBG> This one is tough! Thanks, Connie

HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!!!! Blacksheep,in the Hall family??? Moonshine? I'm sure they were "revenuers". Yea that's it!:-) :-) I keep telling people that I've got kin that used to preach agin' it upstairs and make it in the cellar. The Christian Co. Mo. rootsweb site has everyone sending in there "blacksheep" story's right now. This would be right in line with the others. It's the color that makes our past interesting to look back on. My Grandfather, Alva Franklin Hall, left the family in 1930 to go to California to make his fortune. My Grannie didn't like being stranded where ever it was. So she went back home, Christian Co. Mo. with their 4 children. He didn't support the children or her. She cleaned houses and did ironing to make a living. In May 1946 he shot his girlfriend and himself in Omahan, Nb. So we all have "blacksheep" even if no one talks about it. How neat to have that picture. Thanks for sharing with us. I have James Henderson Hall, born abt 1825 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He married Sarah D (believe middle name to be Dora) Collier in Pottersville, Howell County, Missouri on Aug. 15, 1855. Children born to this union were: William Perry Hall born June 22, 1855 Nancy A Hall born July 1859 John Thomas Hall born Dec 1, 1867 Grant Hall born ???? James Henderson "Jim" Hall born Aug 21, 1869 Dora Matilda Hall born March 16, 1872 Elias Hall born abt 1873 and 2 infant Hall children name unknown. Family story is that Fredrick Collier disowned his daughter when she married Henderson Hall because he was indian. If you look at William Perry's birthdate and their marriage date, I believe it is more likely he disowned her because she was pregnant before she married Henderson. Family says that Henderson was Chickamaugua Cherokee, but when the family was enumerated as "colored" on a census, Henderson took the state to court and claimed "Portugese" heritage in 1889. The case was a hot topic around Howell County and a change of venue was granted. The case was actually heard in Texas County, Missouri. He produced affidavits from several older members of the Hall tribe, all stating they were Portugese. These court records would be very valuable to me, providing the "older Hall's" who spoke for him, but the Texas County Courthouse burned. He did win his case, and the Hall children were allowed to attend school again though. If anyone connects to this line, I have decendants. I would like to talk to you. Laura
I am looking for information on my 2nd great grandfather James H. Hall. The following is a list of information that I have. Any help would be appreciated. James's wives maiden names are not currenly known. AMEN..... -----Original Message----- From: Anita Johnson <AnitaSue@webtv.net> To: HALL-L@rootsweb.com <HALL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, October 12, 1999 8:02 PM Subject: Hall list junk email I believe that persons who have received the previous email in regards to the microsoft offer(hoax) should first look it up on www.about.com then go to search and look up urban legends, email hoaxes and email junk. I have seen this email prior, it was sent to me about 5 months ago in a similar "mass emailing", and now was posted to the Hall board today and all should be aware that this IS listed as a hoax and fraud. Please use common sense prior to posting non=genealogy related info. It saves me and others tons of space on our email server. I know that others would agree that the surname lists are for the sharing of genealogy related info, not mass emailings. (sorry for the vent, but I felt someone needed to say it.) sincerely, Anita

Valentine Gill Hall is Eleanor Roosevelt's Great Grand father and Valentine Gill Hall, Jr. was her Grandfather. It is an Irish line and I believe Valentine Gill Hall Sr. was the immigrant ancestor. He lived from 1797 to 1880. his wife was Susan Tonrele. No, there was no scandal. Sincerely, Joseph Hall
Hello, My name is Charlotte and I am new to this list. I have been researching my Hall family for years without success and I am hoping some of you might be able to help. My great great grandfather was (John) Henry Hall. He is shown as Henry on census records, as well as his death record. His son's funeral record, Evan Hall, shows his full name John Henry Hall. The first record I have of Henry is the 1850 Madison Co, Indiana census. His wife's name was Susannah. Evan's funeral record gives her name as Miss Everett so I assume her name was Susannah Everett. They had not been married too long as they had no children. By the time the 1860 Madison Co, Indiana census was taken they had three children: Evan Philander Hall born in 1851 (more about him later); Marinda born abt 1852 and Anna born abt 1854. All three in Indiana. On the 1860 census his wife's name is spelled Luana. They had at least one more child: George Thomas Hall born 12 Jan 1864. George married Sarah Marthena LaForge (Frena) on 25 Dec 1888 in Burnet Co, Tx. He died 16 Jan 1954 in Burnet Co, Tx and is buried in the Marble Falls Cemetery. Frena was the daughter of Alexander LaForge and Emily Jennings. After the 1860 census Henry disappears until the 1900 Grant Co, Indiana census where is is married to at least his 2nd wife. Her name was Eliza and they had three children: William E born Aug 1881; Minnie L born May 1888; Bertha born Sep 1895. Henry died on 6 Mar 1904 and is buried in the Thrailkill Cemetery in Sims Twp, Grant Co, Indiana. His wife apparently didn't know who is parents were. Evan Philander Hall was born on 29 Aug 1851 in Madison Co, Indiana. He married Serilda Adaline LaForge on 23 Aug 1873 in Grant Co, Indiana. Serilda was the sister of Alexander LaForge. Evan and Serilda had 8 children: 1) Alona Mae "Onie" born 1 Nov 1875 in Grant Co, Indiana 2-3) Twins: Elmer A. and Elsie Belle born 27 Oct 1878 in Swayzee, Grant Co, Indiana. (Elmer died shortly after birth) By 1880 Evan and Serilda, along with their two daughters, had moved to Champaign Co, Illinois where their 4th child was born: William Oscar born in Sep 1880. He was a baby on the 1880 census. Between 1880 and 1883 Evan moved the family back to Indiana and settled Swayzee Twp where they had two more children: 5) Bessie Odell born 3 Jan 1883 in Swayzee, Grant Co, Indiana (my grandmother) 6) Orinda Alice "Ora" born in Oct 1886 also born in Swayzee After Ora was born Evan moved the family to Burnet Co, Tx where Serilda's brother lived. George probably went with them. After moving to Texas they had two more children: 7) Evion Henry "Evie" (rhymes with Livie) born Mar 1891 in Bertram, Burnet Co, Tx 8) Ganes Emmitt born 28 Feb 1892 in Lamar Co, Tx. Evan died on 29 May 1919 in Tulsa, Tulsa Co, Ok and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. I have not been able to find Henry on the 1870 nor 1880 census so I have no idea as to how many children there may have been from his first marriage. The 1900 census shows that Eliza had three children all living. She was much younger than he was. I have not found a marriage record for either marriage. Madison Co is a burned out county and only has marriage records back to 1913. Another big problem is there is no 1870 Indiana State census index. I have done a line by line search of the 1870 Madison Co and Grant Co census and most of the adjacent counties and done the same for 1880. I have also done a line by line of the 1880 Champaign Co. Ill census as well and to date have found nothing. The only reason I know about George is because the family knew him. I have been in contact with other Madison Co Hall researchers and no one knows how my Henry may have been connected. This is where I have been stuck for the past 4 years. I have all the census, marriage and death records for Evan and George and their families but the rest of the family is still a blank. Sorry this is so long but I am hoping that something will look familiar to someone. At this point I'm grasping at straws. I will gladly accept any and all suggestions. Thanks, Charlotte Lucas
