My husband's great-great grandfather married 3 times, due to deaths of wives in childbirth. Each time he remarried the wife was considerably younger, and on each census with a new wife, his age was reported as younger, the first time with wife #2 6 years and the second with wife #3 it was 10 years. There seems to be a reason behind this! Joan

Hello everyone, I am hoping that there is someone out there researching the Hall name in Warren Co. NY. Would love to exchange inf.. Bert and Kathy Hay Tifft
Frank G. Hall was born in Dec 1879 in Jefferson Co., Iowa and his brother Ervin E. Hall was born in May 1881. Their parents were Harvey S. and Ella (Wright) Hall. The family moved to Shawnee County, Kansas before the turn of the century. Frank may have married in Kansas before they left and went to Twin Falls County, Idaho. They had 2 sons and a daughter. The eldest son was born in Washington state and the other 2 were born in Idaho according to the 1920 US census. Ervin E. Hall was widowed with a boy and girl in the 1920 census. The 12 year old daughter was born in Wyoming and the 10 year old son was born in Oregon. Ervin's widowed mother was living with them on the farm and caring for the children. Ervin is buried in the Twin Falls City Cemetery but I don't have a date as yet. I have information back two generations on them which I will exchange for information on their lives before marriage (who they married, their children and their death info). I would like to contact any descendants. Janet King Bower Buznjan@worldnet.att.net Puyallup, Washington
James H. Hall was born in 1872 in Jacksonville, IL and his brother John E. Hall was born in 1877. Parents were David H. and Isabelle (Bailey) Hall. James married Lutie M. Haxton 10 Mar 1892 in Cook Co., IL and John E. married Emma W. Nagle on 11 Feb 1896 when he was 18 yrs old. I have information back two generations on them which I will exchange for information on their lives after marriage (their children and their death info). I would like to contact any descendants. Since we are discussing census screw up's, lets talk about a really strange one. County borders changed all the time. When older people gave where they were born, do you think they gave the name of the county when they were born, or as it is now? I've seen it both ways. For counties newly created, it is fairly obvious, but... Aletha (Thornton) Swift states on the 1865 census she was born in Chenango Co, NY, but she married in one of the far north towns in what is now Madison Co. Vicki

You know there were three sets of all census records ! The first set was the county one and it was the most accurate. At least you had a chance the census taker knew the family and the accents were the same and understood and it was written down for the first time. Then they made a hand written copy and sent it to the state. This is census copy no. 2 ! Often the first one sat in a cellar at the courthouse on books and in some cases on cards. These still exist in some places. Here in Texas I have opened the drawers and there they were all undisturbed for no telling how long. Then the State made a copy on the Official books to send to Washington. That is why sometimes you can't find the right page from an index book because the index was for the US copy and you have on film the State copy. In many cases the local copy has the complete name . someone copying at the county to state or state to Washington put in the initials only cause it was easier. It pays to poke around the courthouse. And the courthouse Clerks rarely even know the thing is right under their noses. They don't know what they have. susan in Texas
HI. Well I believe that census errors were about as common as the "common cold". I have been doing research now for about 5 years on my various family surnames and on almost all I have found on one census or another age errors and sex of the person as well. I found on one census in TN for my Dismukes family my 3rd great grandparents ages of 65 and 67, then on the next census 10 yrs later, the grandfather listed as 77 and the grandmother listed as 66. Which as we could tell from the two prior census that the 3rd one was way off on everyone listed for age. So yes, census error as many have posted prior the reasons for it were very common I believe in just about all state census. sincerely, anita

A census can have as much as a 25% error rate. It depends greatly on the part of the country you're looking at. The farther south, the more errors for the most part. The average person, in the South, normally went thru 2nd or 3rd grade or just long enough to learn enough arithmatic to run a farm. Reading was way down on the list of priorities. The worst census is the 1870, other than the loss of the 1890. That was the first one after reconstruction and the population of the South had doubled, nore than that in some areas. One of the main purposes of the census is to determine how many seats in the House each state will be alotted. The Union wanted to insure that the South wouldn't be in control of the House of Representatives so they had the enumerators deliberately skip families in the states that had been a part of the Confederacy. In some counties with a large population of both whites and blacks, as many as 1 in 5 families were missed, on purpose. A census should never been taken as anything more than a starting point. If the year of birth turns out to be within 5 years one way or the other it is considered perfect. I learned a lot of this at the "Heritage Quest Road Show" when it came here a couple of years ago. If you ever get the chance to go to one you won't be disappointed. Just in case some of you don't know what Heritage Quest is, it's one of the best of the Genealogical publications. Their seminar (Road Show) can't be beat. Charlotte Rodney Hall wrote: > > How common are errors in the census? I have a family with the father Daniel > having 3 different ages up to 5 years apart.
