    3. My grandfather committed murder/suicide. I did not. I do not have a hard time talking about it it is history. His not mine. If we keep everything to our selves no one will benefit or learn from it. It is selfish. We all seem to want to know about everyone else's skeletons. But don't want to admit we have our own. If we read our family history but thought it was someone else's we would think "How interesting". Not what horrible descendents that person must have had. Let's make this fun as well as interesting. Nancy I am having so much fun I think I'll go eat another chocolate chip cookie.<G> ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

    2. nancy johnson
    3. First I want to thank all of you who offered to help me with my search. My problems are the same as all of you run into. So I am not special in any way. Maybe just not as good at research as you are.<G> Working with a handy- cap here folks. The space between my ears doesn't have enough gray matter, don't you know!!!LOL Here is what I would love to have; 1. A birth date and location for Lige (? Elijah ) Hall. Son of Joel Hall b. ca 1867 and Bethenia Morisset. Somewhere around 1888-87 I think. In Christian or Douglas Co.?? 2. A birth and death date for Joel Hall b. ca 1867. Son of Elijah Hall b. 25 July 1845. Elijah was the son of "Judge" Joel Hall b. 9 Dec. 1802. Joel b. ca 1867 died young and Bethenia married a Harrison Smith in Christian Co. I think. Harrison and Bethenia had two children. Art (Arthur?) and Syble. Art owned the old hotel on the square in Ozark for many years. While all the children were young Harrison and Bethenia left them and moved to Calif. Why I don't know. Beth shows up at Lige's in Stevensville Mt. later. It is not known if Harrison died in Calif. or went to Mt. with Beth. Beth dies ca 1935. Lige died in ca 1963-65. I think I can get death certificates for them. Lige's brother Alva Franklin Hall was my grandfather. Born 12 Sep. 1888 d. 10 May 1946 (Mother's day) of suicide after murdering his girlfriend in Omaha, Nb. I did get the newspaper articles about it, his obit and his death certificate. If anyone has any info on this branch of the Hall's I have more I would like to know. There's never enough, is there?? Did Joel (1867) have brothers and sisters? What was Bethenia's b. day? Lige was in love with a lady who did not return his feelings. Does anyone know who it was? He never married. I will be going home (Christian Co.) in March for 11 day's of uninterrupted genealogy research. Ahhhh bliss!!So I hope to be able to locate lots of info. I also hope to go to Va. sometime this fall. I will try to go to Washington to visit the Library of Congress. Has anyone been there? What can you tell me about it? I am told that Va. is the first place Joseph Hall b. 1768 shows up. Who knows. Together we can solve our unanswered questions. If I have anything of use to you please let me know. Adam Hall 9. Susannah Sherman d. 1768 10. Samuel Ford 11. Sarah Rogers >From the 1850 census, East Boston, MA: Luke Hall age 52 Lucy A. Hall age 51 Emeline Hall age 22 Luke Hall age 19 Malinda age 17 Ellen age 14 Albert age 10 (If the Luke Hall who was 52 at the time of the census is the same as the Luke Hall who married Alice Carver, Alice must have died before 1850 and Luke remarried. The children's names fit with the info from Roser's book.) I haven't been able to get access to the 1860 census as yet, but the index for 1860 mentions both a Luke Hall and a Luke Hall, jr., both still in Boston, which seems to mean that the 19-year-old Luke from 1850 was a head of household in 1860. What I'm looking for are the children of Luke Hall, jr. Does anyone know if he had a son named Luke? The family I'm trying to connect him with (or to disprove so I can look elsewhere) is Luke Hall who married Mary Hathaway Smith and had, among others, Luke, Roy, Maude, and Chester. Mary Smith was born in 1855, so it is probable that her husband was also born around that same time and would be included as a child in the 1860 census. If anyone has any info about any of the Luke Halls or even just the listing of the 1860 census for MA, ward 2 (p. 791), I'd be most appreciative. Carol Thatcher Hall

    1. Why do we do this!!!!!!!!1
    2. I Just started so send a not about why I am doing my family tree, I hit the wrong button and it went, without me getting it done sorry about that. My name is Hope, I have been doing my family tree now for almost 9 years. I started by mail, I did not have a computer. I fell into a lot of road blocks. You see my Father died when I was 1 1/2 years old and he was 30 years old. His family kept every thing to them self's. So I only new what my Mother told us. My Mom died almost 20 years ago now and I was only 20 and I felt she was trying so hard to trace her roots and never had the time to get it done She was a very loving and caring and giving person. She wanted this done so she could give us our roots, She use to tell story that her mother or father told her about life back then. I have ton's of picture of her and some of the family in the old days I say cause anything in 1800s is old to me LOL. for me it has been a hard road to get things and seeing I did not have Aunt,Uncle,Grandparents or any one to give me hits on where to look, just a few things my Mother saved and give us to go on. I have found my self down and stuck on some sure names and have stop working on it. But now I am still working hard as ever to get as much information as I can on all my surnames. I have found family in Germany and even know we don't both speak English I can use the computer to help. I also have found a book on some of the Halls and am willing to share the information. I feel now at 40 years old I am going to be working on this till the end and I will someday have it all done. Then I would like to make it a book and Have it say to My Mother You will always live on in our hearts and we love you...... Hope CGomez5077@aol.com

    1. Hall Family in Al. and Ms.
    2. With all of the interest in the Hall Family right now, I will try again to locate information on my husband's family. I believe that Thomas and Eliza Hall who lived in Wilcox or Monroe Co., Al. were the parents of James Hall. James married a woman named Catherine . They appear on the 1850 census for Wilcox Co., James and Catherine had sons named Robert, George, and John Monroe Hall. John Monroe Hall was born July 8, 1857 and died in Poplarville, Ms. in 1911. His father died of the fever . Catherine and the boys lived with Thomas and Eliza after James died according to the 1860 census. John Monroe left home at the age of 13. I do not know what happened to George or Robert. I do not know where John Monroe was until he married Rebecca Jane Boone in Clarke Co., Ms. in 1891. She had lived in Sumter Co., Al. I believe that he got land and harvested timber. It is possible that John Monroe Hall was married prior to his marriage to Rebecca Jane . She was several years younger than he. They had seven children. Marvin Harrison Daniel Hall, Eva Hall, J.Otis Hall, Alice Loretta Hall, Robert Sollie Hall, Jay Monroe Hall, and Emile Hugo Hall. Does this fit into any of your Hall families?

    3. Does anyone have information on or connect to the Hall family from WV (VA) They were in the area of Jackson, Mason, Kanawha and Roane counties. Other associated families are Hughes, Sayre, Staats and King. I have a lot on descendants I'm willing to share but nothing to speak of for the Halls. Solomon Hall moved from WV (VA) in 1858 to IN. Any help is appreciated. I'm also descended from John Hall of Yarmouth, Ma and willing to share what I have on him. There is a new list out for his descendants.

    1. THANK YOU
    2. Thanks is well deserved by this list for all the encouragement and support after I jumped before I thought this morning. I did not realize there were so many people that did not know each other could offer support to another person they did not know. Another thank you to you all for sending me the deleted files I ask for and thank you for your time spent sending all these kind words . I will be adding more postems so don't worry, I am still here and I know that you are there for me. By the way, there is a family of Halls that are buried right here in my hometown cemetery that are of no lineage of mine but I will put the names out to you and see if you recognize. I believe their names are Calvin and Rachel Hall. Would you believe my mind went blank just now. They were quite prominent in this community, which is Downs, Illinois and in Bloomington. I know there is a biography of him in the historical encyclopedia at the library in Bloomington. I will look for this when I go to the library which will be one day this week. Thanks again everybody.

My involvement in the Hatcher family genealogy is as compiler/website maintainer. For the past three years Hatcher cousins have submitted much family data, including collateral lines. I suddenly found myself with 30,000 names and a large percentage of these names were just that - names. No dates, no other info. Hundreds of them were far removed from the Hatcher connection. And I also found myself overwhelmed with inquiries and no answers. Yes, it is embarrassing. Before I uploaded to WC, I spent many hours removing these meaningless names from my file. At least now I recognize the names in these inquiries and because I have the researcher's names recorded in the notes of their ancestor's page, I can direct the inquirer to a direct descendant. I don't claim to have solid backup for everyone on my file, but I have enough info to point someone in the right direction for further research. I would seriously question that names without any other information is necessarily a good lead, but only my opinion. I personally will never make an inquiry on just a name on the assumption that's all the submitter knows anyway :-) Cheers, Nel

    1. Re: VA/KY/IL Hall's
    2. Rob Richardson
    3. The particular Mahlon referred to in your query (below) was the son of Caleb Hall and the grandson of Leonard Hall. There's a pretty good history of this family available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Centers, "The Life and Times of Leonard Hall". Leonard was born in Maryland and obtained land in Kentucky in a Rev War grant from Gov Patrick Henry of Virginia. The land was surveyed by D. Boone. Leonard married Grace Letton in Prince Georges County, MD. Leonard had a son named Mahlon who I call the "bad" Mahlon. He and a brother-in-law, Henry Resnick, seemed to have squandered Leonard's fortune after his death and the two were subject to several lawsuits by other members of the family. The "good" Mahlon was the son of Caleb Hall, "bad" Mahlon's brother. Caleb married Elizabeth Forqueron and then Suzannah Butler. Mahlon married (1) Cassander(ra) Parker daughter of Aquilla Parker, Rev War vet from Maryland; and then (2) Hannah Reed. Mahlon had 11 children by Cassander and then four children by Hannah. Rob Richardson ----- Original Message ----- From: <RootLines@aol.com> To: <HALL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2000 9:51 AM Subject: VA/KY/IL Hall's Looking for information on Mahlon Hall, below is some of the history on the family. I will be posting this to my web page, will et you know when it's online. If anyone connects to this line or has additional information please contact me. This family came from VA? lived in Burbon County, KY and then moved to DeWitt County, IL by 1829. Hope someone can find a connection love to find new cousins. Barbara Guinn Mahlon raised his family in Burbon County, Kentucky. I am trying to locate Mahlon's father I checked the 1791 Burbon County, Kentucky tax list I found several Hall's listed; Aron, Caleb, Joshua, Orasha, Thomas and William. Mahlon would have been about 14 and I do not know which of the above may have been his father. It may be Caleb as Mahlon and Caleb are listed on the same page every tax year. According to the 1810 census Caleb was over 45. I have not been able to locate the Hall's from Virginia prior to 1790, but a lot of the original tax records are missing. History of DeWitt County, Illinois - Published by Brink, McDonough & Co., 1882 Mahlon Hall, March 03, 1777 - 1856 "Mahlon had married twice in Bourbon County, Kentucky: Cassinder Parker, September 26, 1780 - before 1825, were wed December 20, 1798 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. His next wife, who moved with him in 1831 from Bourbon County, Kentucky to DeWitt County, Illinois, was named Hannah ____." [Known facts: Mahlon married three times, first to Betsey Walker (1777-1798) February 17, 1795, Burbon County, Kentucky. They had one son not proven. Second to Cassinder Parker (1778-1818) December 20, 1798 Burbon County, Kentucky. They had 11 children. Third to Hannah Reed (1785-?) April 30, 1820 Burbon County, Kentucky. They had 5 children. History of Barnett Township, DeWitt County, Illinois - Published by Brink, McDonough & Co., 1882 "Barnett is situated in the central western part of the county and is bounded on the north my Waynesville township, on the east by Clintonia and Walpella, on the south by Turnbridge and west by Logan county. It contains thirty-six sections of excellent prairie land, there being no timber except a few groves situated along Tem Mile creek in the south-east. The western part of the township is quite rolling, sufficient to afford very good natural drainage. "The township was named Barnett in honor of Franklin Barnett, he then being the oldest householder within its boundaries. First Settlements "The first to take steps toward settling the township was Elisha Butler in the fall of 1829. He moved from Salt creek timer in Tunrbridge Township and settled in section thirty-three. October 17th of the same year he entered the E ½ of the SE ¼ of the above section. He at once erected on him premises a pole cabin 14X16 feet, and move into it. The following spring he proceeded to break a small patch of ground and planted it with corn. This was the first crop and the first farming done in Barnett. The same year he sold out his possession to Mahlon Hall. The latter was a native of Virginia, but moved with his farther's family to Kentucky when a mere boy. Here he married twice and lived until he was past the meridian of life. In the spring of 1830, he came to Illinois and entered the W ½ of the SE ¼ of section thirty-three, now Barnett township. At the same time, he bought out the property of Mr. Butler. He then returned to his family in Kentucky, and in the fall came to his new-found home brining his family with him. The family consisted of his wife, Hannah and six children, Polly Ann, James, [children of 2nd wife] Mahlon R. Jonathan R and Susannah. They moved into the pole cabin constructed by Mr. Butler. The next fall Mr. Hall built a comfortable log house, and was thus well fixed for pioneer life." [This is from another section of the book] "December 25, 1832 Hiram Daniel sold to Mahlon Hall the west half of the south-east quarter of section 34, in township 20, range 1 east, 80 acres, for $160.00 This tract is now subdivided into six parcels of various sizes, it is assessed at $1,600.00 and is worth $4,000." "Mahlon Hall, a Virginian, settled on section 33 in township 20 R. 1 east in 1830; was in 1839 the largest landholder in the county, owning 1,200 acres of land, valued at $4,600. He also paid taxes on $863.00 worth of personal property." Several of the older children were left in Kentucky. Darius and Ambrose came to the state prior to their father, but settled in another county [sons of 2nd wife]. They subsequently moved to this county. [This is from another section of the book] "Darius Hall came here [Turnbridge Township] in 1831, and located in the Coppenbarger settlement. He was a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, and came to this state in 1829 and stopped two years near Springfield. He was married in Kentucky in 1819, to Mary Jones. When they came here they had five children. Mr. Hall moved to Clinton a few years ago where he died. He was elected constable in 1831, and afterwards served two years a deputy sheriff." "Darius Hall was made the fiscal agent of the county, June 24, 1859. All county money were ordered to be deposited with him and he was to pay interest to the county at the rate of ten percent per annum on all deposits left in his hand for over sixty days." "Former citizens of the County now no more, Clinton Precinct, [among the Hall's listed] Greenberry Hall [son of Mahlon and 3rd wife Hannah Reed], Darius Hall [son of Mahlon and 2nd wife Cassender Parker] and Mahlon [the father]" "The following have removed from the county and most of them are know to be living" [the only Hall listed was H.H., that would be my direct line Henry H. Hall, son of Mahlon and 2nd wife Cassender Parker. He was living in Tazwell County by 1880] "Roster of County officers of DeWitt County, Illinois: [two Hall were listed] H.H. Hall, Coroner, 1839 -1844 [son of Mahlon and 2nd wife Cassender Parker] Jonathan R., Hall, County Judge, 1869 - 1873 [son of Mahlon and 3rd wife Hannah Reed]" "Hallsville is situated on what was formerly the Champaign, Lincoln and Havanah Railroad, now a branch of the Wabash road, and in the north-east corner of section 33. It was laid out by Jonathan Hall in 1871. The first house in town was moved from Turnbridge Township by John O. Dee in the fall of 1871. The first storehouse was commenced in the fall of 1871, and completed the following spring. It was a frame building, one story and constructed by Hall & Deland, and situated in block 8, lot 1. Their merchandise consisted of general stock, suitable for a country store. It was destroyed by fire in 1875." ______________________________

    1. Apology
    2. I want to apologize to the list for my quick response to some criticism that I realize now I did take the wrong way. I was not feeling well this morning and just jumped to a fast conclusion. I will continue to post what I have to the list. And please,do forgive me. I am still needing 3 + 5 , and 6,8,9 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 Hall information emails. Or did anyone get them. I know that delivery to all of the list were slow. I can't believe I deleted out of my files. ~DEBBIE~

    3. I just did some searching and found a site on FTM at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/e/l/s/Cheryl-D-Elswick/index.html This is Cheryl Elswick's site and appears to have no connection to Hoem, BUT she does have William as son of Andrew and Margaret ? You might want to contact her and see if she knows this Hoem, since they appear to have similar info. Cheers, Nel

If you have your own website, list it. But at least invite others to contact you for more info. I personally get a bit disturbed with people who will upload a file, particularly one with 45,000 names, and then refuse inquiries - just my humble opinion. Cheers, Nel

    3. I also found more errors in other Surnames from this same file and made a complaint to World Connect - they recommend placing a post-em - but that would take a lot of time with the number of errors and you have to post it to each name with an error - I haven't found correct info on this file yet.
