    1. [HALL] (no subject)
    2. John - thanks for the advice - here's some details. I am trying to find/prove John P. Hall's parents. I totally agree about the census records, his birth year reports as 1843 both when his parents would have been the informer and when he or his wife would have been, so I've taken it as a "likely". Have searched all online marriage sources that I know of for Kentucky or Hardin County (all the usual suspects, Ancestry, Genweb, Rootsweb, Kindred Trails, Cyndi'sList, Hardin County, State of Kentucky Google, etc) and cannot locate a marriage record. As far as Morton I cannot tell you how many hours I've poured over census records searching for two sisters named Sarah and Matilda the right ages. Only recently it dawned on me that Morton could have been Matilda's married name. I've tried again but without even an idea of a surname, that's proved difficult, although I'm persevering. Newspapers, that's a good idea. Based on where his living wife/son/grandchildren were living, I will need to make the drive, it's Alexander County, a tiny county in Southern Illinois bordered by Missouri and Kentucky and nothing there is microfilmed. No idea where Sarah is buried either, their son who died before they did is buried in Alexander County, in a cemetery that is no longer in use, but the headstone is much newer than the other stones in the cemetery, later Hall descendants are there as well. My Great-uncle did a survey of all the cemeteries in the county for a book published in the 70's and there is no record of either of them. Even my Great-Great Grandfather has controversy where he is buried, one Great-aunt says he was buried in one cemetery, one says the other, no tombstone in either and no one seems to know where if any, are the cemetery records. They were a poor, farming family for generations. The joy of the small, rural county. Very good idea on the in-laws. I've searched the records based on all permutations of his name, I'll try again with Sarah Hall instead. The only John Hall, I found in the 1870 census in Kentucky at the right age that wasn't married to someone not named Sarah was in the penitentiary, so nothing to identify him. Another good idea on Barney. It has been a family name at least since Barney Edward Hall (son of John P.) He named his first son Barney Ray, when that child died, he named the next son he had Barney Ray again. I appreciate the help, and if anyone has additional information on John P. Hall or Ignatius Hall in Hardin County Kentucky from 1818 forward, I would love to hear from you! I can share info on what happened to the branch of the family when they moved to Alexander County Illinois. Since you obviously do not live near your uncle, there's no point in sending the kit to you and then you resending it to him. The only problem I can see is in how you pay. If by credit card, there will be no problem - you can do that online when you order. But if you intend to pay by invoice (check or MO), your uncle must return the kit to you so that you can include payment OR you must send your check to him and hope he doesn't forget to stick it in the return package. You will be the one who must provide your EKA data so no problem for your uncle. The one thing he WILL be responsible for is signing the release form so that your results will be available to all FTDNA testers. Nel

    2. I have asked a couple of times before, but since the list is so active right now I figured, why not try again! - My brick wall is with John Hall born abt 1676 - don't know where, married Abigail White on 27 Feb 1705 in Scituate, and died 30 Jan 1770 in Marshfield. I have seen people guess for some reason that his father's name was Timothy, but no one has ever proved that and I don't necessarily agree. The reason they guess Timothy is because he has a son named Timothy. But he also has (an older) son John. His wife's father was Timothy, so I would assume that is why the second son is Timothy. Census records can be very accurate but not precise. IE, if you see a series of records that have him born about 1843 in KY, based both on his parents as informer and as himself as informer, then he is likely born about 1843 in Kentucky. The issue with census records is the informer. All too often, I find that the informer seems to be an older child or a second spouse who does not know where husband was born vs. where he may have told he grew up. In 1880 and subsequent census, where parents were born because a problem. I find that early children seem to know more of the family history than the later children. Used intelligently, census records may be some of the most valuable sources we have. The group think that likes to criticize or belittle them is wrong. All too often I hear "census bad, could not locate so and so". When I looked it was often a case that indexing was bad and researcher did not try hard enough to find the person. Or the person had moved and the researcher did not know it. When I go looking for a census entry, I expect to find it, and I estimate less than 5% of the time I come up empty. >J.P. as he as known, married Sarah A. (whose sister is named >Matilda Morton unfortunately don't know if that is her maiden or >married name) Do you have the actual marriage record? It might list the names of his parents. In 1880 census, Matilda is listed as age 25, b. KY, single, sister-in-law. What have you done to try to locate her in the earlier census? In 1860, you should be able to find a Matilda, age about 5, and Sarah/Sally, age about 12, in same family named Morton.
