    1. [HADLEY-L] Cane Creek -- Hadley, Marshall, Doane, Pike
    2. Hello Everyone, Last Sunday I visited Cane Creek MM -- more or less (more actually) on the spur of the moment on my way home (northern Virginia) from a family business trip to Louisiana. I did not arrive there until about 4:45 after going the wrong way quite some distance on "49" outside of Liberty. This followed wrong turns earlier in the day getting to Westfield MM (my Hortons). I did get there and had time to wander a bit. My folks I have been told by others who are buried at Cane Creek MM include John Pike, h/o Abigail Overman, John Marshall & Ruth Hadley, Joshua Hadley (father of Ruth by his first marriage to Mary Rowland), John Doane and Elizabeth Pike and John Doan's parents, Joshua Doane and Mary Carter. (FYI they boil down to my 3g grandparents Abram Marshall & Martha Doane, both buried at New Hope MM near Rheatown, Greene Co TN, which was a heck of alot easier to find than Cane Creek or Westfield MMs.) While at Cane Creek I saw the tribute for Abigail Overman Pike, the stone/plaque for John Pike and Abigail Overman, with Elizabeth Pike's first husband Alexander Stuart's beside. I saw William Marshall's marker. I know that Abigail Overman is not actually buried there. I know/knew at the time that there is a marker for Joshua Hadley and Patience Brown at the Spring MM site close by, but I had no time to pursue that. I also understand it is believed they are actual buried at Cane Creek. I have a number of questions: (a) Do any of you know offhand or have a cemetery reading that might tell if there are markers or headstones for any of the other above persons -- John Marshall & wife Ruth Hadley, John Doane & Elizabeth Pike, Joshua Doane & Mary Carter? I made a quick survey of new markers, but I lost my light (obviously). (b) I hope to go back in a couple of weeks as I have business in Durham. Can anyone give me directions to Spring MM so I can see the memorial to Joshua Hadley and Patience Brown. (c) I am also pretty much over the wall so to speak on visiting the actual homesites of my ancestors (and had the pleasure of doing so on Saturday with Daniel Horton d. 1839 in McMinn Co TN, son of Abraham Horton and Martha Williams of Westfield MM). Do any of you know, have visited the more specific homesites of any the above. I know that John Marshall's brother William is said to have donated the land for Cane Creek, but my impression is that John actually lived a little distance away. I do have a couple of deeds for John Doan in particular. (d) Is there a local library in Alamance or Chatham that might have the above information? FYI, I may squeeze in a day at the Archives in Raleigh before I do the visits again. Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter -- usually at Jleehunt1@aol.com
