    3. These books are especially interesting in that they were near Cross Creek, NC (later Fayetteville). This was the home of Thomas Hadley, my ancestor. One character she refers to is Farquar Campbell. He was a very real person and a close friend of Thomas Hadley. After the Scotch Tories shot and killed captain Thomas Hadley, Farquar Campbell swore revenge and reportedly chased the man who shot him away from the area. Farquar played both sides during the revolution and there is much misinformation about him. I have an inside view here as my dear friend William Fields is a direct ancestor of Farquar Campbell. He is the head of the Cumberland county genealogical society, and has transcribed the earliest minutes of the courts of common pleas. I have every book he has this far written. There are many Hadley references that have greatly "fleshed out" my knowledge of Thomas Hadley and his family, and the fascinating times they lived in. The books are slanted to make the Scots appear to be on the patriot side to some degree. In feeling if not in action. This is a very complex subject, and we'll leave it at that. There is a good deal of excellent period reality in these novels. Some of the best I have read. I still think of Big Foot when she is referred to as Sasenach.
