    3. The Hadley Memorial is located on Route 41, about a mile and a half north of the road to Bloomingdale. At the edge of a wood just north of the embankment where the abandoned rail line crosses the highway. It is hard to find because it sets back off the road in a wooded area and in Spring and Summer it has a lot of foliage around it. I have pictures of it and a map posted on http://www.betweenbrothers.com/ - there is a link to the Hadley Memorial Pictures. If anyone wants a copy of the higher resolution jpegs just email me and I will be glad to send them to you. A link that I found interesting was the Quilt shown on http://rims.k12.ca.us/ugr/urg_2001/day3_01/html/archives_ex_tra.html In an aside, I think it is very interesting that Paul Hadley won a contest held by The Daughters of the American Revolution to design the Indiana State Flag. Paul Hadley, who lived in Mooresville, won and his design was adopted in 1917. He lived from 1880 until 1971. (http://www.ai.org/sic/about/emblems/state_flag.html). This said the monument was in Indiana. Repeated searches did not bring the reference back up. I have now found a photograph and wanted to share the information in case anyone else is interested. It is on the USGenWeb site for Parke County, Indiana under photos. It says, "A memorial to Alfred and Rhoda Hadley and others of Bloomingdale who maintained an Underground Railroad station to assist fugitive slaves to freedom." Alfred Hadley was married to Rhoda Coffin, the sister of Levi Coffin ("President of the Underground Railroad.") He was a first cousin of my ancestor, Elizabeth Hadley. A list of "Known Operators of the Underground Railroad" for Indiana also lists the Brown family and the Clayton family which were related by marriage to the Hadleys.
