This was sent to me by someone who knows I am interested in Hadleys in Texas. Thought some of you would be interested. ". . .I'm reading a book by Rick Miller, "Bloody Bill Longley", about the outlaw Bill Longley of Texas. He lived around Belton and Lampasas Counties, south of here, but he roamed throughout the area. In one place the author says that Amos Ben Hadley was hanged at Longview, TX on Aug 30, 1878 for the Dec 1877 murder of a Gregg County grocer. Hadley was said to be an associate of Brown Bowen and John Wesley Hardin." Quoting from the book: "Prior to the execution, Hadley was interviewed, at which time he made a rambling statement to the "people of Texas" claiming that he was with Brown Bowen and John Wesley Hardin just prior to a murder for which Bowen was executed, but asserting that Hardin was responsible. Then he went on: Those murders that people are putting on Bill Longley God is putting on mob law. He is not guilty of a third of them. I was with him the day before he killed Anderson. He had a good right to kill him, for Anderson made the first attempt." "Longley denied any knowledge of Hadley and his claims." That's the only reference to a Hadley in the book. Gregg County is next to Harrison County. Longview was on the border between the counties. Jesse Hadley and his brother William lived in Harrison County in 1850, but Jesse moved to Erath Co. by 1860. William remained in Harrison County, but I think died before 1880, as his son Ben was living with his Aunt Cynthia Duffle by then. Does anyone know who Amos Ben Hadley is?
