This concerns a query to the Hadley forum from BMcPadilla@aol.com concerning what happened to the older daughter of Eunice Hadley, daughter of George Marshall Hadley and Rachel Doane. Eunice had married Isaac K. McCollum in Indiana and had two daughters, Mary Jane born about 1856 in Indiana and Rachel Elmina (Mina) born in 1856 in Iowa. Although my grandmother was Samira Rebecca Hadley, daughter of Isaac and Susannah (Hadley) Hadley, I am only distantly related to the Hadley family which settled near the present town of Stuart in southeastern Guthrie County, Iowa in pioneer times. However, I have endeavored to maintain a file of the members of Summit Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends (later Stuart Monthly Meeting) which was associated with Bear Creek Monthly Meeting in Bear Creek Quarterly Meeting in west-central Iowa. My records indicate that the name of the oldest daughter of Isaac and Eunice (Hadley) McCollum was Martha Jane, not Mary Jane. Also, although her death does not seem to appear in Quaker records, the records of the North Oak Grove Cemetery on the north outskirts of Stuart, Iowa indicate that Martha Jane McCollum is buried there, b. 3-25-1856, d. 8-27-1857, age 1 y, 5 m, 2 d. There may be a stone at her grave, but I do not remember seeing it. The older portion of the cemetery, the primarily Quaker cemetery, is located in the northwestern corner. 5 mo. 10, 1856 Isaac K. McCollum and wife Unice and minor child Martha Jane received on certificate from West Union M.M., dated 3 mo. l0, 1856 - Three River MM, IA. 6 mo. 12, 1861 Isaac McCollum retained in membership, had married contrary to discipline. - Bear Creek MM, IA. 6 mo. 7, 1863 Certificate approved for Isaac McCollum to Center MM, IA - Bear Creek MM, IA. Bear Creek Monthly Meeting, consisting of Bear Creek Preparative Meeting and Summit Grove Preparative Meeting, was set off from Three River MM at Ackworth, IA in 1856. Summit Grove Monthly Meeting was set off from Bear Creek Monthly Meeting in 1865. Records indicate that the Isaac McCollum family transferred from Center MM, IA to Lynn Grove MM, IA in 1872, and in 1884 the family was granted a certificate from Lynn Grove MM, IA to Pasadena MM, CA. Elmina McCollum, younger daughter of the marriage of Isaac McCollum and Eunice Hadley, received a certificate from Lynn Grove MM to Pasadena MM, CA on 8 mo. 2, 1890. By his second marriage, to Luzena Ballenger, Isaac McCollum had six children: Emma, Ella, Matilda, Lewella, John, and Clarence. One of these was probably the sibling of John C. McCollum living in Seattle. I am a descendant of the Barnett family and have done considerable genealogical research concerning the Barnetts. I do not know what Barnett relative John C. McCollum had remembered who visited his family when he was a child. Although the information of the death of this little girl is of an unpleasant nature, I hope that it answers your query.
