Hello, This is from Bob Norfleet regarding the Keeran family that was intertwined with our early Hadley ancestors. Bob gave me permission to pass this along to the research group and also add to the Hadley Society data base. John Hadley THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME KEERAN (1/30/2001) The determination of the country of origin of our Keeran/ Kerns name has required much effort. First, the name and it's variations are reported to exist in a number of countries such as German, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. Secondly, like many names, Keeran has evolved into various forms as a result of the passage of time, translations into different languages, and changes caused by geographical usage. We now believe that our name originated in Ireland, and has evolved, with many variations of each base name, from the original Gaelic name, Cian, into Kieran, Kerron and Keeran until it finally became Kerns in the United States about the mid 1800s. Some family members continue to use Keeran. In Quaker records it is most often written as Keeran. First, the origin of the name itself was studied. Sources included the following: Irish Family of Names. (O'Laughlins) Irish Family of Names (Kelly) Irish Families (MacLysaght) Irish Names and Surnames (Rev. Patrick Woulfe) Each reference supports the conclusion that the name has its roots in Ireland. To be perfectly sure, I contacted a firm, Barony Productions, which was recommended by the Ulster Historical Foundation. This company specializes in the analysis and distribution of names in Ireland. They concluded that the name , Keeran "is Gaelic. It is covered under Kieron in MacLysaght in "Irish Families". It is from the Gaelic for Black or dark brown." They go on to say that there are a great number of variants today. Those without the final "s" include, among others, Kieron, Kearon, Kerin and Kerrane. Those with a final "s" are Kearns, Keirns, Kerins. Kierons, Kerns and Kerans. A map was prepared at my request showing the geographical distribution of these names today. Concentrations are found around Dublin in the east and in County Clair in the west. In my judgment, this is a definitive statement by a reputable firm which confirms that the name Keeran is of Gaelic and Irish origin. Other sources support this conclusion as well. In Kelly's "Irish Family Names" we find similar information. Under Kerns the following Variations are listed : O'Kearan, Kearn, Kierans, Kearns, Kerns, Caerns. " The original name is from the Gaelic "KEER" or "CIAR" which means dark brown or dark colored, swarthy. Originating with a Tiriconnell family in Donegel in the 11th century, branches of which became leaders of septs in Donegel, it spread into Mayo where it was of importance in the 16th century. Later it became widely prevalent. The motto is "Faithful and Constant." A Coat of Arms for O'Kieran, Kearns ( O Ceirin) is shown on plate 161 in the 'Irish Book of Arms' with the same motto as above. An inquiry was also sent to the Ulster American Folk Park which has an extensive data base of names. They found no mention of Keerans or similar variations in their records. They did, however, send a photocopy from MacLysaght (Page 202) which addressed O'Kieran and variations. Also forwarded was page 461 taken from Rev Woulfe's book, Irish Names and Surnames which states: "O Ceirin <without accents>- O Kearin, O Kerine, Kerrin, Cairn, Kearin, Kearn, Kereen, Kerin, Kerrin, Cairns, Kearns, Kerins, Kerrins, Kerns, (Cary), &c; Des. of ceirn<with out accents> (dim. of cian, black); the name of a family who were anciently lords of Ciarraighe Locha na n-airn, in Barony of Costello, Co. Mayo, and doubtless of several other families in different parts of Ireland. In the 16th century, it was very widespread, and is now represented in every province......" Conclusion. All reference sources and professional genealogist that I have consulted strongly support the conclusion that Keeran, and its many variations, is an Irish, Gaelic name. Historical and Geographical Research Before I had confirmed that the name Keeran had Irish roots, historical patterns of migration were analyzed, and a strong possibility emerged that our ancestors were originally from Scotland, had been transplanted by the English to Ireland , and later came to the colonies where they were referred to as Scotch- Irish. Thus, my genealogical research initially focused on the counties in Northern Ireland where the majority of Scotch Irish were known to have settled. Some Keerans which met our time frame were identified as a result of contracted genealogical research , but no direct connection was ever established with our Keerans. While conducting research in Northern Ireland, a key bit of genealogical information was uncovered. It was learned that our Thomas Kerns, the emigrant, was the son of a Keeran who had married a Quaker by the name of Jane Hadley, and they had lived in Ballynakill, Kings County and Moate, Westmeath County. Since these Counties are far away from the Scotch- Irish concentrations of Northern Ireland, it was suspected that the father of Thomas was Irish and may have come from this general area. If this proves to be correct, it is a major exception to a historical record characterized by separation and animosity between the English and the Irish. It also raises many questions as to how such a union could have taken place and was maintained. Obviously, further research is called for. The Scotch-Irish theory about the name Keeran suggest that since the Scotch- Irish were dissenters like the Quakers, such a union would have been more likely than an Irish one. This may be true to some degree, but the Quakers kept themselves separate and apart from the Calvanistic Presbyterians as well as from the Catholics and members of the Church of England. Such a marriage would not have been approved by them, and conflicts would have existed as they would have with an Irishman. It has also been suggested that a Keeran ancestor may have fought with Cromwell and was rewarded with land in Kings or Westmeath County . I have seen no substantiation for this. On the contrary, John Prendergast covers in exhaustive detail the lands taken from the Irish and the reassignment to Crowell's soldiers in his book, The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland. In this book we find that most of the soldiers who received land had English names, and there is no mention of land given to a Keeran or other similarly named individual in King's County, Westmeath County or any other County that I can find. However, there were a number of Kernanes,Kirwans, McKernans and O'Keiranes who, as Irishmen, requested permission to stay east of the Shannon and others who requested permission to transplant with their Irish masters. MOATE, COUNTY WESTMEATH by Liam Cox, gives detailed information about the town's formation and identifies many of the early settlers who came to live there. No mention is made of Keerans or Hadleys. Pender's Census of Ireland (circa 1659) This census was published about a decade after Cromwell's campaign. It records over 140 Keeran and related surnames living in 11 different Counties across Ireland. No Keerans were recorded in King or Queens Counties. In Westmeath County, Keerans are identified in two Baronys: Demifoure (later Fore in 1828) and Farbil. There is a Castlekieran in that county which is located near the Shannon river. There is also a Ballykieran which may be the name of a near by valley. This would indicate a long presence of Keerans in that area.. I have been unable to connect our Keerans to those listed, but there are some interesting possibilities which will be investigated. The parish of Castlepollard was also home to a large number of Kiernans during the late 1700's, and up to at least the mid 1800's. Research of Catholic church records have revealed a fountainhead of Kiernans whose numbers are greater than any concentration hitherto fore uncovered in any other part of Ireland. It is obvious that they are Catholic Irish. Thus, the evidence strongly suggests that our Keerans may have come from this local group or the general region. Robert Kerns Norfleet

I am confused by the name of Simon Hadley's wife. Is the name Ruth Keran or Ruth Miller? Are the Ruths the same person?
Happy New Year Everyone! The Hadley Society Photo Gallery is now online!!! It has taken much longer than I ever anticipated - mainly because I've been learning html, etc. as I go, and basically teaching myself. And I still have much to learn! (I'm also in the middle of remodeling a house, and moving.) However, at least now there is something to look at! Please know that this is - and will always remain - a work in progress. What is up so far are pictures that other Hadley's (and those from related lines) have sent to me, and the text comes either from that person, or the documented source. Names, places and dates are from the Hadley Society database and/or what has been provided to me - with definite proof. Also, there are currently two sections (Documents and Monuments) where not everything is up yet, so not all the links will work. I'll upload the pages as soon as I can get them done. If you have submitted something to me and you don't see it - please be patient. I promise I'll get it up as quickly as possible. I'm hoping you will enjoy this website and pass the word (and the link) on to anyone else who might be interested. And - if you have something you would like added, send it to me and I'll get it up. I'm open to any and all suggestions about what to add - or not. This site belongs to everyone of us and we can make it what we want. (Assuming of course, that I can figure out how to do it!) Please let me know if there are any problems, or if you find any mistakes. I try to check everything in both Netscape and MSExplorer before I upload it, but one never knows. I would really, really appreciate any - and all - feedback. I've never done anything like this before, and I'm a bit nervous about it. And many thanks to those of you who have submitted and helped me so far - especially Jane Ramsey and Jean Hadley. In the meantime - here's the link - Enjoy!!! (Also, my apologies to any of you who may have received this email twice.) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hadleysociety/ Sincerely, Sherri Hadley Rice
My data shows that my 5th great-grandfather Joshua Hadley was married to Patience Brown and not Mary Rowland. I am intrigued by John Hadley's E-mail of December 27, 2000 reporting the deed of Simon Hadley in New Castle, Delaware in 1713. Confused by the Mary Rowland mention. Can anyone explain this. My descendants from Joshua are Joshua/Ruth Lindley; Jeremiah/Mary Hornaday; Jonathan/Ara Carter.
Hi Ellen, I had to go back to this email to try to figure out how I messed up this time. Joshua Hadley married Mary Rowland prior to Patience Brown. He also had a little fling with Margery Lindley between wives. Or so said Margery anyway. Joshua had 3 or 4 children with Mary Rowland, the only boy being Thomas Hadley. Most of the southern Hadleys come from this line, including yours truly. Hope this is what you were after and thanks for writing. John Hadley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ellen B. Hello, I got a call tonight from Al Dobbins. Al has been looking through some books and old records and has found some very important items. The first, and most obviously significant, was found in the book "New Castle Delaware Land Records 1715-1728" by Carol Bryant. In book E1 p 191 is listed the original purchase deed for 1,000 acres by Simon Hadly for 200 pounds. The date of the deed is 25 September 1713. It was recorded 27 May 1718, just after the house was built. So this verifies that Simon and family were indeed the owners of this land in 1713. Until this finding, it has always been said that the family immigrated in 1712, but the first document has always been the certificate of removal in 1716. Al Dobbins has found verification of what is now the earliest record of Simon Hadly and family in America. The boundaries and chain of possession directly back to William Penn are listed on the document. As this book is simply an index with some description, we will need to have the original documents looked up and copied. Any suggestions as to how to best get this accomplished? Al Dobbins also found other Hadley family references in this book. 16 Aug 1723 Simon Hadley county Newcastle and wife Ruth deeded to Joseph, son of said Simon 50 acres for 20 pounds bordering Simon's land and other land owned already by Joseph. The property description proves this was a part of the original 1,000 acres. Recorded 15 September 1723. Book G p 235. 12 December 1726 Simon Hadley of Mill Creek Hundred deed of gift to Joshua Hadley of Mill Creek Hundred (Miller) for love and affection 200 acres adjacent to land already owned by Joshua. This is significant in that it tells us Joshua's occupation was a Miller. Also, it was very close in time to the birth of his first child with Mary Rowland, Ruth Hadley. Recorded 25 May 1727 book H1 p155. 12 November 1723 a deed from Simon and wife Ruth for 300 acres for 125 pounds to Thomas John. The description proves this land was also part of the original 1,000 acres. This is additional evidence to the above that Simon sold and gifted much of the original 1,000 acres long before his death in 1756. Al is uncovering many other details of these early ancestor's lives. He will soon provide us with the documents showing evidence of previously unknown marriages, children and brothers and sisters. I have some notes from our conversations, but will wait until Al has the opportunity to get this information more completely researched before we put his excellent work into our data base. A big thank you to Al Dobbins for some really great work !! John Hadley
