I am trying to find information regarding my grandmother's family. Florence HADLEY was born in London in 1880. Her parents were John Emmett HADLEY and Emma Charlotte FARMER. John Emmett's father was also named John and his wife's name was Ann. According to the 1851 census, John and Ann had 4 children, George A., Ann, William and John Emmett. All of the information I am finding is American. Is this the wrong place to be looking, and if so, does anyone have any suggestions where I might try? Thank you Louise John & Louise Stephens www.horsenorth.com 184 Sutton Place Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 6B4
Cindy & List - The descent described by Cindy is essentially correct. Edward Kinnison & Mary Greenaway are my ancestors & so I have had occasion to look at them. >From my Quaker Hobson database, I can say that the Edward Kinnison spoken of was born about 1680, perhaps in PA & died in 1736 in Chester co,PA. He is buried in Goshen MM burial ground where he was a member. His father appears to have been named Edward as well & he had a son Edward also. I believe that all of his children were disowned at Goshen MM, Chester co,PA at one time or another for marriage out of unity, as was Hannah when she married Capt. George Hobson. Capt. George Hobson & wife Hannah Kinnison moved from VA to Orange co,NC in 1756. Hannah mended her fences with Goshen MM that had disowned her years before & was granted a certificate to Cane Creek MM where she became a member in 1757. All of this can be followed in "The Quaker Collection" wherein the Hobson family as well as the Hadley family have a place of honor. It is incorrect to refer to Hannah's son William Hobson Sr that married Sarah Williams as Jonathan William Hobson. The "Jonathan" is a bogus Mormon affectation and cannot be supported in the Quaker records or any of the books published on the Hobson family. George Arnott Hobson (1829-1897) had TWO Hadley wives. There is a Family Group Sheet on his parents Edward Hobson & Mary Rushton in The Quaker Collection at: http://home.sprynet.com/~jrichmon/hbsn0517.htm As shown there, George Arnott Hobson had an older brother who was named Edward Kinnison Hobson (b.1820) for their ancestor. He/they had a cousin ALSO named Edward Kinnison Hobson (1826-1868) who was the son of Isaac Hobson & Ruth Hinshaw. As far as I am aware, except for the Hobson connection noted, there has never been a concerted effort to trace the Kinnison family. Regards, Jerry Richmond You are cordially invited to visit "The Quaker Collection" http://home.sprynet.com/~jrichmon/qkrcoll.htm -----Original Message----- From: Cindy Smith <cindysmith9@hotmail.com> To: HADLEY-L@rootsweb.com <HADLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2001 8:10 AM Subject: [HADLEY] Kinnison I did some checking into the Kinnison surname last summer. Did not find out if the John Kinnison of 1810 had a Betty, but the Hadleys do have an earlier Kinnison connection. If you look at the Hadley database, George Arnot Hobson, married Emmaline (I think she is just Emma on the database)Hadley. George Arnot Hobson is a Kinnison descendant. The Kinnisons were Quaker. I have a descendant chart someone sent me, so I can't say I have proof of this line, but on the chart George is a descendant of Edward Kinnison/Kinneson and Mary Greenway. Their daughter Hannah Kinnison married George Hobson, then Hannah and George Hobson's son Jonathan William Hobson married Sarah Williams in Cane Creek MM, NC. Jonathan and Sarah's son William Hobson married Mary Cashett, and William and Mary's son Edward Hobson married Mary Ruston. Edward and Mary Hobson are the parents of George Arnot Hobson who married Emma Hadley. Edward Kinnison and Mary Greenaway had six children but this chart only includes some of the descendants for two of them. It certainly looks possible that a descendant ended up in Missisppi Territory in 1810. On another note, although Jesse B Hadley reported on the 1880 census that his mother Elizabeth Kenderson/Kinnson was born in Germany, I don't think that is correct. Jesse' sister Cynthia Duffel was living nearby and she reported their mother was born in MS. Daughters usually know more about their mothers than sons know. The 1880 was the first census to ask birthplace of parents. I think Jesse was caught by surprise and either did not know where his mother was born, or Elizabeth is the source of our elusive Indian heritage and he wanted to hide that information from the local census taker. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ==== HADLEY Mailing List ==== Been too busy at Rootsweb sites? We finally did it! Due almost ENTIRELY to the unceasing efforts of Sherri Rice, The HADLEY SOCIETY site now has it's own domain name. This should make it easier to find and access. There are still some 'final touches' in progress, but you should be able to access almost everything from that site. If anything isn't working, let us know. The old site will stay up for now, so both URLs will work Sherri has done a great job, and her hard work and long nights are GREATLY appreciated! new url: HadleySociety.org Enjoy!

I uploaded to Rootsweb last night, an updated version of the official Hadley Society database. There are new data and corrections on various families. With the start of a new year, the cut off date for living persons has been updated to 1906. Persons born after 1906, and any of their descendants, living or dead, should not appear in the online database. As always, we continue to accept corrections and additions. The database URL is: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=hadbase Thanks for your support Sincerely Terry McLean, Historian Hadley Society
My great uncle was born Joseph Henry Hadley, ca 1885 in London England, His father was John Emmett HADLEY and his mother was Emma Charlotte FARMER. He had three surviving sisters, Florence, Emma and Ethel. He was known within the family as Tim. He served in the British Army during the first world war, apparently deserted, and rejoined under the name SCOTT, which was his wife's surname. He died of the effects of being gassed in France I have his obituary from the Kentish Times, Mar 1929 which is under the name Joseph Henry SCOTT. I have his death records, but can't find a birth certificate. I have tried through professional research servces, but they say they can't find him. Any suggestions as to what to do next? Hello, I have been helping a cousin, Cynthia Blount, in Alabama who is trying to get into the DAR, via our ancestors Ben and Thomas Hadley. I sent a large packet to the DAR on her behalf, which used some of the HS materials and some of the more recent findings by Vickye White and Cindy Smith. The DAR would not let Cynthia join the DAR because there is no marriage record for Ben and Betty Kenderson (Kinnison). In fact, we know very little about Betty. I am hopeful that my efforts help her and get our Revolutionary war veterans recognized. She just wrote me back and said the DAR had sent her receipt of our applications, but no decision yet. Interestingly, she also sent me a copy of the Mississippi territory census from 1810. As Al Dobbins has taught me, I started with the Hadley listings, only one for Ben, but then looked at the other names on the list to see if there were any collateral lines or other clues. Low and behold there is a listing for John Kinnison, who had one daughter under 21 years of age. Perhaps our Betty? John Hadley
Does anyone have the current email address for JB and Fran Cummings? I have lost their information and want to contact them regarding Mariah Day and Hiram Hadley. They sent me some information regarding these two about 2-3 years ago. I would really like to find them to get another copy of the information. Thank you. Judy

Dear List I can't believe the the speed of the reply I received to my query. I joined the HADLEY-L list on Sunday, posted a query on Monday and received an answer on Tuesday.. THANK YOU SO MUCH Betty McCollum Padilla
This concerns a query to the Hadley forum from BMcPadilla@aol.com concerning what happened to the older daughter of Eunice Hadley, daughter of George Marshall Hadley and Rachel Doane. Eunice had married Isaac K. McCollum in Indiana and had two daughters, Mary Jane born about 1856 in Indiana and Rachel Elmina (Mina) born in 1856 in Iowa. Although my grandmother was Samira Rebecca Hadley, daughter of Isaac and Susannah (Hadley) Hadley, I am only distantly related to the Hadley family which settled near the present town of Stuart in southeastern Guthrie County, Iowa in pioneer times. However, I have endeavored to maintain a file of the members of Summit Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends (later Stuart Monthly Meeting) which was associated with Bear Creek Monthly Meeting in Bear Creek Quarterly Meeting in west-central Iowa. My records indicate that the name of the oldest daughter of Isaac and Eunice (Hadley) McCollum was Martha Jane, not Mary Jane. Also, although her death does not seem to appear in Quaker records, the records of the North Oak Grove Cemetery on the north outskirts of Stuart, Iowa indicate that Martha Jane McCollum is buried there, b. 3-25-1856, d. 8-27-1857, age 1 y, 5 m, 2 d. There may be a stone at her grave, but I do not remember seeing it. The older portion of the cemetery, the primarily Quaker cemetery, is located in the northwestern corner. 5 mo. 10, 1856 Isaac K. McCollum and wife Unice and minor child Martha Jane received on certificate from West Union M.M., dated 3 mo. l0, 1856 - Three River MM, IA. 6 mo. 12, 1861 Isaac McCollum retained in membership, had married contrary to discipline. - Bear Creek MM, IA. 6 mo. 7, 1863 Certificate approved for Isaac McCollum to Center MM, IA - Bear Creek MM, IA. Bear Creek Monthly Meeting, consisting of Bear Creek Preparative Meeting and Summit Grove Preparative Meeting, was set off from Three River MM at Ackworth, IA in 1856. Summit Grove Monthly Meeting was set off from Bear Creek Monthly Meeting in 1865. Records indicate that the Isaac McCollum family transferred from Center MM, IA to Lynn Grove MM, IA in 1872, and in 1884 the family was granted a certificate from Lynn Grove MM, IA to Pasadena MM, CA. Elmina McCollum, younger daughter of the marriage of Isaac McCollum and Eunice Hadley, received a certificate from Lynn Grove MM to Pasadena MM, CA on 8 mo. 2, 1890. By his second marriage, to Luzena Ballenger, Isaac McCollum had six children: Emma, Ella, Matilda, Lewella, John, and Clarence. One of these was probably the sibling of John C. McCollum living in Seattle. I am a descendant of the Barnett family and have done considerable genealogical research concerning the Barnetts. I do not know what Barnett relative John C. McCollum had remembered who visited his family when he was a child. Although the information of the death of this little girl is of an unpleasant nature, I hope that it answers your query. Herbert Standing, 1806 Bear Creek Road, Earlham, Iowa 50072.
I am looking for the first daughter of Eunice HADLEY McCOLLUM. (1834-1860) She was the daughter of George Marshall HADLEY and Rachel DOANE - married Isaac K.McCOLLUM 1854 in Indiana. She had two daughter prior to her death; Mary Jane born about 1856 in Indiana and Rachel Elmina (Mina) born 1858 in Iowa. In the 1860 Morgan Co.IN census Mina was living with her father but Mary Jane was not. Apparently Rachel Elmina was raised by Isaac and his second wife Luzena BALLINGER but there is no mention of Mary Jane in any of the family records except for an interview given by her half brother (my grandfather) John C. McCOLLUM in "THE HISTORY OF MERCED COUNTY, CALIF" stating that he had a sibling in Seattle. My father remembered a relative visiting named BARNETT when he was a child and mentioned it prior to his death. Could this have been her married name? She might have been raised by one of Isaac McCollum's brothers or by a HADLEY relative. Does anyone have a clue as to where Mary Jane went?
