    1. [HADLEY] Ellis Island
    2. Becky Teague
    3. Hello, Hadley researchers, Many of you might have heard by now, but the big genealogy news is that a big database of records at Ellis Island are now online. The address is: www.ellisislandrecords.org The database is taken from microfilms of the original paper manifests, and covers arrivals at Ellis Island from 1892 through 1924, the peak years of immigration to US. >From the Rootsweb Review: "Key data available on immigrants includes name, gender, age on arrival, marital status, ship name, port of origin, and last residence." I've tried the address a few times, and as you might expect, it's getting a huge number of hits. I couldn't get through, but best wishes to you. 2. Hi Sherri, Just a note on the Hadley Pottery. The pottery is still made in Louisville and was designed by Mary Alice Hadley. She passed away several years ago. I don't know what the relationship would be to our line. I just returned from a trip to Washington, DC and Pennsylvania and visited the Simon Hadley Home in Delaware. It really looks nice with all of the restoration and landscaping that has been done since my last visit. I spoke to Mrs. Gonzalaz who is managing the property along with her husband. It is owned by the Robert N. Downs Memorial Conservation Inc. Foundation and they are trying to purchase additional land. The surrounding land is being developed and they want to keep the Hadley home preserved. Sounds like the move was exciting. Hope everything survived the move. We are preparing to sell our home in Michigan and move to Indiana within the next several months, so we will probably go through the moving experience as well. Take care J Hadley

    3. Hi everyone, Glad to be back and I appreciate all the kind words about the new website. If you haven't had time, please stop by www.hadleysociety.org. Also, if you've sent me pictures or anything else and it is not up yet, please be patient. I've just moved and am still unpacking, etc. I promise that nothing is lost and I will get back to work on the website soon. Does anyone know anything about "M.A. Hadley" pottery? I saw some in a mall recently and I was just curious to know if he/she were "one of us." Thanks! Sherri Hadley Rice

    1. [HADLEY] Gertrude Rose Hannah, b. 1877 or 1879, UK
    2. Peter Horner
    3. Hello Hadley hunters, Gertrude was my maternal Grandmother. Her marriage certificate suggests that she was born in 1877, her Death cert. suggests 1879. On Christmas day 1896, in the City of London, Gertrude married George Horace Titmas, and her Father was named as John. So far I have been unable to find Gertrude's Birth cert., and therefor I do not know her Mother's name. She had at least one sister, Maud. My family think that John Hadley was in the Army, served in India, at one time was stationed at Colchester, Essex, and that he was in an Irish regiment. I have found the Army records of a John Hadley that meets all this criteria, but I cannot be sure that he is the correct John. This John even returned from India to the UK in 1876, and married in February 1878! But without that Birth certificate...........! (I have searched for births at sea and in Army records and the family does not appear in the 1881 Census) Any help or possible connections will be gratefully received. Kind regards Peter

    1. [HADLEY] T. J. Hadley
    2. Hello Hadley researchers, Recently, while going through some old papers, a newspaper clipping of an obituary for a T. J. Hadley was found. There is only one T. J. Hadley on the Hadley database and because of the death date, this individual is a different one than the one found there. Does anyone know which line this T. J. Hadley descends from? Other papers found with his obituary praise his talents in writing poems as he had a book of his poems published. By the age at his death written into the obituary, he died in 1922 in El Reno, Canadian Co., Oklahoma. His obituary reads as follows: T. J. Hadley was born near Indianapolis, Hamilton County, Indiana on Sept. 24, 1855; died at his home in this city (El Reno, Oklahoma) Monday afternoon, Nov. 6, aged 67 years. He moved to Kansas in 1878 and was united in marriage to Miss Florence Reeser, at Burr Oak on October 23, 1880. To this union nine children were born, eight of whom survive. In April, 1892, he came to Canadian county and for three years, 1894, 1895, 1896 he was a teacher at the Rock Island school south of this city. Later he went to Union City where he engaged in the mercantile business which he conducted for 13 years, serving as postmaster for 11 years. Mr. Hadley held a birthright in the Quaker church but had been a member of the M. E. church for the past 40 years. Mr. Hadley was a talented writer and his poems were a source of delight to Canadian county citizens. The deceased is survived by his wife and eight children, Robert Hadley, Ruby Hadley, Theodore Hadley, Mrs. Marguerite Iles, Mrs. Pauline Yost and Carolyn Hadley of El Reno, O. S. Hadley of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Dorothy Warren of Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the first M. E. Church conducted by Rev. Buirley. Interment took place in the El Reno cemetery. Thanks for any help you can provide. Betty Ann (Arnold) Honeycutt

I just returned from a trip to Fayetteville and Snow Camp (Cane Creek) NC. I found a few more tidbits. John Allen is the current archivist for the Cane Creek MM, and he gave me and my mom the tour of the area, and also an introduction to Wade Hadley, b 1909, who is truly amazing at any age, much less over 90. I took a lot of notes and will be writing up a few of the points of interest in the next days. John Allen and I discussed some of the features of the upcoming Cane Creek MM 250th anniversary celebration on Oct 5 of this year. John is really a fine man and I am most pleased to have met him and made a new "Friend". It was very rewarding to ride around with him as he showed us all the old family home sites of the original Quaker families. 3. In respect to Simon Hadley's deceased sister, Hannah Hadley, the Hadley database is in error. The children there attributed to Hannah Hadley are wrong and likely should be attributed to Hannah Stout, wife of a different William Thompson. As I show in both my Quaker Thompson and Hadley databases, Hannah (Hadley) Thompson's only child was the Rebecca Thompson mentioned in her uncle's will. I didn't know there was a Simon Hadley in Pickaway County, but thought he had to be one of the descendants of Simon the Immigrant from Ireland, so I ordered photocopies, all nine pages. When I got home, I checked the Hadley Database. This is Simon, son of John Hadley and Margaret Morton. He had no children, so he left his estate to his siblings Elizabeth Dixon, Emy Dixon, Mary Pinnock, and to nephews John and Samuel Hadley, and nieces Rebecca Thompson, Phebe Hadley, and Sarah Hadley, children of his deceased siblings Samuel Hadley and Hannah (Hadley)Thompson. The Hadley database shows that Simon died in 1817, but as he was adding a codicil to his will in 1818 in Pickaway Ohio, that date must be in error. His executor Isaac Dixon died and Simon named a new executor. It appears that Simon heard of the death of his executor, and sent for his will(which had been in the possession of Isaac), or that someone in New Castle County brought him his will when they travelled to Ohio to inform Simon of the death of his executor. I am puzzled about why he named niece Rebecca Thompson in his will, and the Hadley database shows only Elizabeth and John Thompson as children of Hanna (Hadley) Thompson, and no Rebecca. If more children were born after the original will in 1803, Simon could have added names in 1818 when he changed executors. Cindy

These are the Hadley marriages: Jesse Hadley to Phely (sic) Smith Oct 13, 1853 [This is Phebe, we have this record in the database] John Hadley to Savanah Ursey Jan 14, 1864 William Hadley to Zoda Western Jan 21, 1864 John Hadley to Perene (sic) Ward June 19, 1866 [This is Perivine, this record is in the database] Julia Ann Hadley to Seaborn J Saunders Aug 26, 1852 [This is in the database now] Mrs. Julia Ann Sanders to Hatley Smith March 13, 1864 [This is in the database] I have browsed the Hadley site and don't find Savannah and Zoda. Did John Hadley marry twice? Is Perevine Ward John Hadley's second wife? I saw this note on William and Sallie Stewart Hadley's page that suggests William may have had a second wife. [From Hadley database]"Census records of 1870---Aug. 9, 1870-Garden Valley-Smith Co., Texas (near Longview) Sarah Hadley-age listed as 31 Children: Edward-13 Mary-17 Samuel-8 Frances-6 Benjamin-4 Martha Ward was also living with them. Martha's age-17. [From Hadley database] "Because of Sarah's age here, we wonder if she was the second wife of William and if, in fact, there were 2 families here. John "Bud", William "Tete", and Mary Mollie being half-siblings to the others." The Harrison County Book by Nancy Blakeley Ruff published in 1983, is a compilation from a typed transcript made in the 1930's. The originals were destroyed by fire or water many years ago. I have found several errors in the transcript. It is possible that Zoda in the marriage record is a Zorah or Sara. In the 1870 Smith Co. census was Sarah written very clearly and or could it be Zorah or Zoda? I can't even find this Hadley household on my 1870 online index, is there another surname as head of household? Anyone have any ideas about these marriages? 3. I think you may find this Joshua Hadley in early TX I have run into him several times. I sent John Hadley some info on some of his lines that I had picked up working on my lines & it is the same line that Danny Porterfield Hadley belonged to. Some of the were in Montgomery/Walker Co. TX. My Great Aunt Laura Sadler married Duncan Hadley in Limestone Co. TX. Duncan Hadley was the son of Simon & Sarah Davis Hadley. Pat Oates in TX. 1. [HADLEY] Perry King and Mississippi Hadleys
    2. Cindy Smith
    3. Vickeye, I have a few notes on those other Hadleys in Mississippi. I found a Perry King in the BLM GLO online land records http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/. He was in Hinds County Mississippi in 1835-1840. That seems a bit late for what you need but maybe he is a son. Hinds County is where the Moses Hadley line was, but Moses is not from our Simon Hadley line, he is from the George Hadley line. Moses' son Thomas B.J. bought and sold land in Jackson, Hinds County, Miss ca 1835-1840. T.B.J. is the Hadley who moved to Houston, Harris County, TX. He and his wife Piety Smith ran a boarding house in Jackson, Hinds County, Miss, before they moved to Texas. Moses Hadley had a brother John who can also be found in the Mississippi land record searches. If you search for Thomas Hadley you will find many entries for Thomas B. Hadley. I found no Joshua's in Mississippi early land records searches. I have a list of Moses Hadley's siblings, and a list of his children. There are no Joshua's on these lists or in any deed records and other records that I have seen on this family. If you tell me again what other surnames you are looking for I will look in my Moses and T.B.J. Hadley notes for them. I deleted your earlier messages and now I can't seem to find them in the Hadley archives. Cindy Smith ----- Original Message ----- From: "emo" <emo@gorilla.net> To: "Vickye White" <vickye@usaonline.net> Vickye, Since you received the document from MS Archives it appears the county you are looking for is Jackson Co., Mississippi Territory, formed in 1812 (before Miss & Alabama became states in 1819) from the old Mobil District, Mississippi Territory. There is one entry for Private Joshua Hadley included on a roll for Hinds' Battalion of Calvary, Mississippi Militia during the War of 1812, from a publication of the Mississippi Historical Society. There were listings for latter in the 1800s for Mrs. Hadley "a widow", Dionysia Hadley and Thomas Hadley in Early Pioneers of Alabama that I could not find on the pages the index indicated. 1. [HADLEY] DAR
    2. John Hadley
    3. Hello, Every now and then you try to help a cousin with some family pursuit and you actually succeed. A cousin of mine in Alabama had been trying to join the DAR for many years. They kept turning her down, and she asked me to help. I wrote a long and compelling saga, complete with photos and references of documentation. This is my line too, from Ben and Thomas Hadley. I had always assumed that our line was recognized by the DAR, but not so, until now. The cousin is Cynthia Blount, and now she gets to join the local chapter. I would like to add that the material from the NC archives regarding the Hadley's participation in the NC militia in 1783 and 84, showing that Ben and his brothers did in fact serve, helped make the difference. This was recently unearthed by either Cindy Smith or Vickye White. I can't remember which, but they both do so much for our research efforts anyway. We don't yet know exactly how our line will be recognized by the DAR, but the results are forthcoming. I enclose Cynthia's letter to me below. She is not online. I really gave this one my best shot and it made me really happy to help this fine lady achieve her goal. Doncha love it when things go right? John Hadley March 10, 2001 Dear John: Thank you so very much for the letter to the DAR, the information and pictures to send to them. I sent that along with something that I had gotten to send them. I also wrote them a letter so I guess all of this information sent to them this time helped out. I received a card the other day from the DAR saying, "Your application for membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was verified on 2?22?2001 . Your membership will be formally accepted at the APR 14th meeting of the National Board of Management. An official membership certificate along with your national number will soon be mailed to you". I was also told to notify my chapter when I receive this card. I was surely glad and proud to receive this card and read what it said on it. Thanks again for all of your help. I would like to also thank you so very much for all the information you sent me on Thomas and Benjamin Hadley's life. It is real interesting reading about my ancestors of yesterday. I would like to go to Fayetteville and visit that part of the country. I imagine that you probably already had some of the information that I sent to you the other day. There was a John Hadley on the list of Hadleys that I sent to you. Is this John Hadley the same John Hadley that was in the picture that you sent me? If I can help you in any way please let me know and I will see what I can do to help you. I don't know if Mrs. Harrell will Write to me about the information I sent to her on Benjamin Hadley but I will let you know if she does write to me. Thanks again for everything you have done to help me. GOD BLESS AND TAKE CARE, Cynthia
