    1. [HADLEY] English Hadleys
    2. Julian SHEPHERD
    3. Greetings from England! I joined this list nearly a month ago in the hope of making some contacts, but it seems to be the quietest list on the Net !! My paternal grandmother was a Hadley, and I am therefore researching the Hadley ancestors. Mostly they lived in the County of Gloucestershire, England and also London, England. I have quite a bit of information on them already, but am looking to extend it further. I am in contact with a branch that moved to New Zealand 100 years ago, but have not been able to make contact with any "pure" living Hadleys in England - yet. If there are any Hadleys on this list who think they may have any connection to my Hadleys, I would be very pleased to hear from them. Finally, my Hadley grandfather was Charles Harman Hadley. He was born in the village of Frocester in Gloucestershire, England, in 1844 but "disappeared" around 1880 and I have been unable to trace any further reference to him. If his name means anything to anyone, I would be grateful for any information. He is not listed in the English 1881 Census, so I assume he had either died by then, or he had gone abroad. Best Wishes to All Julian F.H. Shepherd Coventry, England

    3. Hi gang....it's sure been quiet lately.. I am subscribed to receive a daily upload list from Rootsweb. I'm sure some of you are too. I happened to be scrolling thru a list and found Simon Hadley's name. If anyone's interested, this is the page: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/1pa/history/local/colonialoff01.t xt He's listed as a Justice of the Peace. The above record extends into another file, same as the first, except that it's 02.txt at the end. Maybe it's commonly known already, but I thought I'd just throw it in, just in case. Hope everyone's well. Connie ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! 3. Hi Cousins, Despite the recent tragedies, our family reunion in Whittier California will go on as scheduled. I am flying down there on Thursday night. I am not about to sit at home in fear and let these terrorists win out. It's time for all of us to be brave and get on with our lives, not stay home in fear. This is a good time to get together with our family and reconfirm those values that make America great. I hope to see you there. John Hadley president, Hadley Society

    2. John Hadley
    3. Hi Cousins, Just wanted to drop you a note about our reunion at the end of September in Whittier California. You have likely seen the details with the times, etc. I just wanted to add that one feature will be very interesting. For decades, the Hadley Society collected materials sent by people from all over the US and beyond. No one really had the time to do much with this material except put it in boxes according to categories. Last year, Sherri Hadley Rice, Terry McLean and myself, spent the day prior to the reunion sorting through these boxes and divided up the materials according to subject matter. Jim and Jean Hadley took some additional materials that were relevant to researchers from their area. There were about 15 large boxes, enough to fill the back of a pick-up truck!! Sooooo, this year we will be presenting some brief details of "What is in the boxes!!" While digging through the materials last year we found a copy of an original document from the early 1700s with Simon, Ruth and Joshua's signatures. That may be the highlight, but who knows? Like most of the others, I have yet to read through most of it, so as of now none of us know what is there either!! I think there will be some good stuff, so if you can make it, please attend. We will be spending all day Friday doing some brainstorming, prior to the reunion on Saturday. One of our key topics will be how to make the HS more of a national and international organization. Since the advent of the internet, our membership has gained a much wider scope. We would like to help organize regional HS chapters and reunions. We would really appreciate your input as to how we could do this more effectively. There are several existing Hadley family reunions, and some areas that have fairly dense Hadley relative populations. These are the obvious choices but what really makes these functions work is the involvement of a few people that can take charge and make it a success. We are thinking that the HS could send some officers, members, speakers, etc to help give these efforts some backing from the "mother" branch and make everyone feel more a part of the whole. Make sense? We know it's difficult and expensive to travel great distances. Many of you would like to attend but can't justify the time and money. So regional reunions would give all of us a better opportunity to meet each other and share information, photographs and a few laughs. Please help us with this effort and we will all be the richer for it. We are a small group, with only a hand full of people doing most all of the work. Every extra helping hand is really appreciated and important. This isn't just a hobby, it's our family. Think about this and come to Whittier if you can make it. Thanks John Hadley president, Hadley Society

    1. [HADLEY] SoCal Meeting
    2. Sherri has invited you already, but here is a bit more detail PLEASE NOTE A CORRECTION in the time we start on Saturday. It is 10am not 1pm. Sherri offers her apologies! THE HADLEY SOCIETY Invites you to attend our 79th Annual Reunion Sep 22, 2001 - Whittier CA First Friends Church in Whittier, California 10am sharp until 3pm The Meeting is being held in September this year, instead of October, so that we might determine if the earlier date will enable more people to attend. More people are traveling in from out of town, and we have had requests for more time together. Based on that, we have also planned a get-together on Friday afternoon. During this time you can share stories, compare family information, get help getting started with research, etc. You don't have to make a reservation to attend however we DO NEED an approximate idea of numbers attending, so your RSVP would be helpful. The meeting on Saturday is traditionally a potluck. If you are coming from out of town, you may want to consider picking up KFC, sandwiches or something. If you need help with that, contact Terry McLean. We REALLY NEED to know how many to expect on Friday, so we can find a meeting place of the appropriate size. If you plan to attend on Friday afternoon, contact Terry McLean. NOTE that Friday's meeting will be in a different location - you must contact Sherri, John, or Terry for details. [addresses at the end of this message] If you are bringing children, there is a play-yard connected to the side of the church. However the Society is not providing any supervision or childcare. Check the website for any last minute information. Annual Dues can be paid to Alice at the meeting or mailed. If you need a mailing address, contact Terry, Sherri, or John. Once again we want to express our most profound appreciation to Martha Cush who, each year, makes all the arrangements for our meeting facility in Whittier. Thank You, Martha! ELECTIONS: 2001 is an Election Year. Officers are elected to serve 2-year terms. Volunteer positions are for an unspecified length of time. The election takes place during the business portion of Saturday's meeting (about 11am). Nominations and Recommendations will be accepted from the floor. Vote is by raise of hands. NOMINATIONS and/or RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OFFICERS - PROPOSED SLATE OF OFFICERS: The following are elected positions and are Officers and members of the General Board: President: John Hadley, Portland Oregon Secretary/Treasurer: [position open] The following are volunteer positions and are considered officers and members of the General Board: Webmaster: Sherri Hadley Rice, Kerrville, Texas Database Manager: [position open] Publications/Publicity: [position open] Newsletter: [position open] Publications Committee: traditionally comprised of all officers and any volunteers. 1. [HADLEY] Nora HADLEY mg
    2. Cindy Smith sent some updates on the family of Nancy Frances HADLEY and Newton STIGLER. In the endnotes she made note that Erath co TX marriages had a mg 29 Dec 1897, Norah HADLEY md L. L. GLOVER. This must be mg of Lewis Lum GLOVER and Lenora HADLEY, d/o Amos and Margaret (HADLEY) HADLEY. However, Hadley Society records show Nora born 1887, which could not possibly be correct, or she would be married at age 10. Looking over the records of the family of Amos and Margaret (HADLEY) HADLEY, I see the dates for the birth of all their children seem to be questionable. They md in 1878. I show their first child born 1881 - not bad. But it gets worse from there. Next child (Nora) born 1887 - 9 years later, then children #3-10 born 1890-1908. Isn't that a rather large gap for a couple married in 1878? Does anyone have more detailed information regarding this family? Thanks Terry

    1. [HADLEY] Hadley Society Reunion
    2. Sherri Rice
    3. Hello everyone! Just a reminder from your webmaster here that the 79th annual Reunion of the Hadley Society is fast approaching! If you haven't already done so, mark your calendars and make plans to attend the reunion this year. While the official Hadley Society meeting will be held on Saturday afternoon, September 22 at the First Friends Church (Quaker Meeting House) in Whittier, California, many of us are planning to make a weekend of it. Some of us are traveling a long way to participate (I'm driving all the way from Texas!), and we want to spend more time together. We had lots of fun last year meeting each other, sharing our family trees, photographs, documents, and just plain visiting! With our ever increasing presence on the web, our membership is becoming much more widespread and diversified. We want to be certain that everyone feels included and we really need your input. Among the many things to be discussed at this years meeting is moving the site of the annual reunion. Would more people be able to attend if the reunion were held elsewhere? I've offered to host a Hadley Society Reunion here in central (Kerrville) Texas - what do you think? Would you come? Several of us are staying at the same hotel in order to be able to visit even more. If you would like to join us, contact me and I'll send you the information. (This particular hotel has a special discount rate that weekend, too!) I will be posting Reunion highlights and pictures on our website as soon as I get home. If there is any particular thing you would like to know about (or see a picture of), please, let me know. I'll be glad to include it in my Reunion coverage. (However, getting our HS President, John Hadley, to stand still for a decent picture may prove to be impossible - again!) You don't have to make a reservation to attend - just show up! We would like to know if you're coming however because we have a pot-luck lunch and need to be sure there's enough food. (But really - has there ever not been enough food at a family reunion???) You can contact me, Terry McLean, Alice Platon, or John Hadley with your plans. Here is the location information: When: Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 1:00pm Where: First Friends Church on the corner of Washington & Philadelphia streets in Whittier, California. I'll post any further details and last minute information on the website. Make plans now and I hope to see you there. I'm really looking forward to meeting more of my "cyber cousins!" Regards, Sherri Hadley Rice www.HadleySociety.org

    2. Cindy, I don't have the answer to your question, but doing some 'creative sorting' on the database, here are some tidbits: The descendants of Simon Peter HADLEY and Sarah Benton DAVIS appear to be ones who lived in the Gregg co. area in the proper time frame. One of Simons' sons, Louis Christopher HADLEY was married to Elizabeth A. BOWEN. Benjamin HADLEY, s/o William and Sallie STUART HADLEY, had cousins named 'Amos' in his line. Unkown if Benjamin had a middle name. Other members of the William and Sallie family were known to be in Harrison Co TX in the right time period. Hoping this will give you a lead or two. 1. [HADLEY] Amos Ben Hadley hung 1878 Texas
    2. Cindy Smith
    3. This was sent to me by someone who knows I am interested in Hadleys in Texas. Thought some of you would be interested. ". . .I'm reading a book by Rick Miller, "Bloody Bill Longley", about the outlaw Bill Longley of Texas. He lived around Belton and Lampasas Counties, south of here, but he roamed throughout the area. In one place the author says that Amos Ben Hadley was hanged at Longview, TX on Aug 30, 1878 for the Dec 1877 murder of a Gregg County grocer. Hadley was said to be an associate of Brown Bowen and John Wesley Hardin." Quoting from the book: "Prior to the execution, Hadley was interviewed, at which time he made a rambling statement to the "people of Texas" claiming that he was with Brown Bowen and John Wesley Hardin just prior to a murder for which Bowen was executed, but asserting that Hardin was responsible. Then he went on: Those murders that people are putting on Bill Longley God is putting on mob law. He is not guilty of a third of them. I was with him the day before he killed Anderson. He had a good right to kill him, for Anderson made the first attempt." "Longley denied any knowledge of Hadley and his claims." That's the only reference to a Hadley in the book. Gregg County is next to Harrison County. Longview was on the border between the counties. Jesse Hadley and his brother William lived in Harrison County in 1850, but Jesse moved to Erath Co. by 1860. William remained in Harrison County, but I think died before 1880, as his son Ben was living with his Aunt Cynthia Duffle by then. Does anyone know who Amos Ben Hadley is?
