I have been enjoying the recent thread of email to the list. As another really distant cousin of Ray's with my Hadley line coming down through Simon, Simon II, Joshua, Joseph, Joshua. Hi Ray, I've just really started the geneology stuff, but was excited to find out that we are distant cousins! Joshua and Patience's son (Simon's brother) Joseph is the ggggggrandfather for our line. We go down through Isaac, Joseph, Evan and Ivan C. If you have any more info here, I'd love to hear it. I may have some to help you too, but rember am a beginner. Also, have a few pictures with names that I can't fit in anywhere yet from Ivan's attic--Jonathon Hadley, his children Babbie?, Billie?, Billie?-Betty Jean Hadley (Blancard?) If anyone can help me place them, I'd love that. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ray.Parker@slkp.com> To: <HADLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 4:57 AM Subject: Re: [HADLEY-L] Hadley > > Norma, This is Ray Parker in Yadkin Co. John, I most certainly would be willing to participate in a DNA study if one is ever begun. I am in that group which has not been able to make a connection to either Simon or George Hadley. And I further believe that such a study would show that Simon and George are of the same lineage. Hello, I have recently been introduced to the process of genealogical use of DNA testing. This offers some interesting possibilities. If we were to get enough volunteers, we could establish a DNA data base of sorts that could help answer some questions. Such as, did our Hadley family originate in Shropshire England, or perhaps Somerset or elsewhere? Also, is there a genetic link between the Quaker Hadleys and the Ipswich George Hadley line? For those who are stumped as to which Hadley line they may be a member of, this might offer a definitive answer. I'm only at the beginning of this prospective project, and would like some feedback. Would any of you be interested in or be willing to participate? If you know anything about this procedure, would you please share this with me and others? To make this effective and worthwhile, a model needs to be established to yield any meaningful results. Unfortunately, the only ones who can actually be tested for the name Hadley, are men who have the surname Hadley. So you ladies would have to convince or coerce a husband, son or brother, etc. I have been told that if enough people participate, the cost per individual test is about $100. I'll start the ball rolling with some ideas. Testing would need to be done for as many Hadley branches in the US as possible. Then we would need to enlist the participation of several Hadley family branches in England as well. We should then see a correlation genetically which could well determine which English Hadley branch we all are most likely to have descended from. This could include every Hadley family, not just the George or Simon lines. A data base could be built so that any Hadley who was tested in the future would have the ability to know which line they came from and therefore concentrate genealogical research in that area. This is not a perfect science at this point in time, but I think it could be really meaningful for our family. There are several families who are well into this data building process. The more who participate, the more meaningful the results. A cousin named Elinor Purdy has sent me some information about this pursuit, including this web site that gives a good background information http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html I have also written to a company that does the test work. Below are my email and the reply. What do you think? Is this worth the time and money? Thank you John Hadley Hi John DNA has serious limitations, in that it can't identify which brother a son is descended from...on the other hand it can tell one HADLEY line from one that actually originated from a different family and just poached the HADLEY name. If you tested a few Hadleys' here in the states (from the unrelated branches), and a few in the towns in England that you think the US hadleys came from you would be able to determine if your Hadleys are actually descended from a common Hadley ancestor...as long as we didn't get messed up with an extra marital event or a unannounced adoption. email any time. Hi Patty, All I know about my Hadleys is that there was a Samuel who came down the Ohio River on a flat boat and settled in southern Indiana before 1816. He was a minister of the Methodist faith and rode the circuit. His son Samuel was in the Civil War and was killed in Ohio. His son was James my great grandfather. Samuel, the minister, died before the 1830 census. Samuel, Civil War Vet, was married to a Nancy Matthews. They were parents of James. I have never heard of a Leroy Hadley. Did he have any other name he went by? What time period are you looking in? Keep in touch.. Jackie
Hello,My name is Ken Hadley and i am responding to your question concerning my genealogy.I am a direct descendent of Simon Hadley and my forefathers lived in Clinton county Ohio around Clarkesville.I do not know much about them and possess nothing of them like pictures.I do own one letter written by my great-grandfather Edwin Hadley to my Dad when he lived in Kansas. My grandfather was Arthur Hadley and i know he had 2 sisters whose descendants now reside in Iowa.I have misplaced the info i got from my research from Hadley society about them, their names,DOB and such.I have been attempting to try to reach someone on my grandfathers side of the family to see if they might have a photo of my grandfather since i've never seen one.I live in Hershey,PA. where do you live?My e-mail address is=mrhads@acninc.net. Hello, I have traced some Shropshire Hadley families from the early 1500s to the middle 1600s when our line moved to Ireland before coming to the USA in 1712. Many of the old records have references to Halesowen. My particular branch was in Quatt in 1590 through 1630. There are other land holdings listed as well. I am wondering if you would have any Hadley records in your family or other Hadley families that go back to this time period. Also, if you are interested, I will send some of these materials I have found to you. Thank you John Hadley president, Hadley Society PS Please send me your email address as I cannot send attachments via Rootsweb. Hi Margie, It is my opinion that these Hadleys are from the George Hadley of Ipswich line. Brad Barr has a good web site on this Hadley family. I will attach the links page from the Hadley Society web site, which has the link to Brad's web site and also some others you might find interesting. The HS was originally dedicated only to researching the family of Simon Hadley, and is often referred to as the Quaker Hadley line. The HS now is working to have a broader scope, and help all Hadley researchers. While looking at the HS website, you might also enjoy the research work from early England done by yours truly. This relates to the origin of the surname Hadley, which really applies to all of the branches of our family in many aspects.
