You mention a CD by the HADLEY Society. Could you send some details please. I looked in what I though were the obvious places on the societies website and didn't see a way to order. I found a notification that the scanning was done. Said "for a future CD". (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie and Tracie Walsh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on!
Linda, Thanks for all of the good work here. We collect all of the Hadley family photos on the Hadley Society photo gallery page. Sherri Hadley Rice is in charge of this and she is doing a great job. When you get the more clear versions of these headstones, please forward to Sherri for inclusion. She has made one entire section dedicated to headstones and grave markers. We also have a section for unknown Hadleys so all of the researchers can see these mysteries and try to help solve them. For those of you who have not seen the HS photo gallery, I include the web site address: http://www.hadleysociety.org/index1.html It is a passion of mine to collect all of the family images that we can. So many get lost as each generation passes. We are also putting all of these on disc so they are preserved for our ancestors. These discs (CDs) have all three of the HS volumes by Healton, and importantly also have all of the updates we have added in the last 40 years or so. The only source of the current Hadleys to my knowledge is this CD. We do not include anyone born after 1905 on the internet data base for privacy reasons. The HS sells this disc at about cost. We are non-profit. If any of you fellow researchers have some Hadley family photos. documents, etc, please get them scanned and sent to Sherri. Her address is on the link above. The Hadley Society annual reunion is coming up soon. It is in Whittier California. You are all invited. Details are on the web site. Any questions please write to me. Thank you John Hadley president, Hadley Society PS I have looked through the data base trying to find these folks but no luck. There is a Zerilda Hadley listed but the dates are too late for this one you have found. There are a lot of Elias Hadleys listed, also, quite a few Martha E Hadleys, but I could not match these up. Hi Sunday in our search for Civil War soldiers graves we stopped at a cemetery we decided to call the Connor Cemetery because Civil War soldier Samuel Connor, his wife, and daughter are buried near the road. It is a very old cemetery located on CR 540W in Parke County, Indiana at N39° 51.735' W87° 20.086'. The burials seem to be mostly during the mid 1800's. We did not have much time to spend there since we were on our way elsewhere when we came upon it so we plan to make a return trip soon. We found the stone for (we are guessing here) Zerilla Hadley, wife of Elias Hadley and their daughter, Martha E.Hadley (died 1858). Unfortunately, we did not get a very clear picture of the stones but we will be going back soon to clean the stone and get better pictures. Sometime ago, my cousin, Bill Craycraft, located the grave of Sophia Hadley Lewis, the daughter of Jonathan Hadley and Rebecca White at Rush Creek Cemetery in Parke County, Indiana. Since the stone was missing he had a stone put on her grave. I have pictures of about a dozen Hadley stones from Rush Creek Cemetery that I have to get posted! I, too, am concerned about the one line answers to questions that have been coming with too frequent regularity to the Hadley-L rootsweb address. I wondered if something had happened to the Hadley list, but am glad that I am not the only one with the problem. I have contemplated asking to have my name removed from the mailing list. I have tried emailing several of the people, only to have the email returned to me with a message stating that the email address is unknown. Melba
I hate to complain, but for the past several weeks there have been a number of these one-line replies with no clue as to what it's about or what the reply is in response to. When replying to a query, respondees should include at least part of the original query, so we have an idea what you are responding to. If it is just a personal comment to someone, then it should be sent to that person, not the list. At least u know where u come from. Tim Hadley Farmersville OHio
I was asking Tim what information he had that led him to think the Hadley family might be Welsh in origin. We are not Irish, except that 2 generations lived in Ireland prior to coming to PN in 1712. My research has found a Hadley family in Quatt, Salop (now Shropshire) that used the distinctive name Simon in two generations. I have both wills from 1590 and 1635. Quatt is very near to the Welsh border. I was hoping for some additional evidence. Even though we have no proof of our ancestors prior to Simon Hadley, who died in Ireland 1711, we do have very certain information about the beginnings of the Hadley family surname. The Domesday book of 1086 listed a Hatlege Manor in Salop. It is still there, as a subdivision of industrial Telford, and called Hadley. It is not proven, but certainly likely, that all of the Hadleys in this area throughout history came from this first Hadley family. William de Hedlega and his two sons signed several documents in 1100 AD as lords of the Manor of Hadley ( or Hedlega as it was said back then). There are many recorded documents about this Hadley family and I have been collecting them. Even if we never prove the parents of Simon Hadley, we can collect the source documents available and have a better history of the Hadley family. The Hadley Memorial is located on Route 41, about a mile and a half north of the road to Bloomingdale. At the edge of a wood just north of the embankment where the abandoned rail line crosses the highway. It is hard to find because it sets back off the road in a wooded area and in Spring and Summer it has a lot of foliage around it. I have pictures of it and a map posted on http://www.betweenbrothers.com/ - there is a link to the Hadley Memorial Pictures. If anyone wants a copy of the higher resolution jpegs just email me and I will be glad to send them to you. A link that I found interesting was the Quilt shown on http://rims.k12.ca.us/ugr/urg_2001/day3_01/html/archives_ex_tra.html In an aside, I think it is very interesting that Paul Hadley won a contest held by The Daughters of the American Revolution to design the Indiana State Flag. Paul Hadley, who lived in Mooresville, won and his design was adopted in 1917. He lived from 1880 until 1971. (http://www.ai.org/sic/about/emblems/state_flag.html). Hello Cousins, Thank you Ray for introducing me to the list. I wanted to introduce myself before now but with Rootsweb's server upgrades, and the unforeseeable problems that have occurred with the upgrade, I've been back logged with bounces from this list and others I admin. One point I want to address with this upgrade is the way the mail has been coming to the lists. The influx of mail has varied in several ways, it has either trickled or flooded in. If you have an email account with Hotmail, Yahoo or any other ISP that only allows a small email quota, the trickling mail has not caused a problem. It is the heavy flow that hits several lists a one time that is causing bounces. So I encourage everyone with a limited mail box size to keep them emptied as much as possible to avoid from being automatically removed from the list because of excessive bounces. If you find that you have been removed from the list please re-subscribe by sending an email to HADLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com -or- HADLEY-D-request@rootsweb.com with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line and in the body of the email. Thanks to everyone for being patient with Rootsweb's upgrade, and please don't get upset if you are unsubscribed from the list due to the upgrade or bounces. Just join us again by re-subscribing. I hope we all have much success in finding our ancestors. Happy hunting!
