    3. Is anybody searching for, or had any luck searching for HAAS family lines who were Jewish? I notice a lot on the list with messages about Lutheran and Orthodox families with the name and I'm curious if anybody else had Jewish HAAS. My HAAS family come from Slovakia and were Jewish. 3. My family name is actually HASS. However, along the way, it got changed to HAAS. As such, I receive lots of mail from Jewish organizations. Apparently these organizations think HAAS is a typically Jewish name.- Ken Haas ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Lovitts" <cread@wn.com.au> To: <HAAS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2000 1:33 AM Subject: [HAAS-L] Jewish families > Is anybody searching for, or had any luck searching for HAAS family lines > who were Jewish? 3. Apparently these organizations think HAAS is a > typically Jewish name.- Ken Haas It is a typically Jewish name. The meaning is "Hare", which is why my Dad nicknamed Mum "Bunny" when he married her. The secondary meaning states "Lower Germanic and Jewish surname". My ancestors came from Puchov in northern Slovakia which of course was in Austria-Hungary in the early days. They lived there for nearly all of the 19th century, my grandfather was born there in 1879 but even his grandparents lived in that village and they were all Jewish.
