    1. [HAAS-L] What is a Haas?
    2. Paul S. Haas
    3. 1) "hass" is a German word for "hate" 2) "Hase" is a hare (and "Hasen" is reference to more than one) in German (& hares are similar to, but not the same as, rabbits -- they're larger, for one thing) 3) Hassenpfeffer is an entree prepared with hare (or rabbit): see http://www.ichef.com/golden-recipes/Meats/2172.html Quite delicious! 4) In The Netherlands, the names Haas and de Haas are both quite common. If a Dutchman asks you a question about something that you either don't know the answer to or simply don't wish to entangle yourself in his query, shrug him off with "Mijn naam is Haas" (My name is Haas), regardless of what your name really is. The Dutchman will understand that as "Don't ask me. I don't know anything." Anyone else will probably think you're weird. As to just why that means what it does to a Dutchman, please refer to my signature at the end of this message. PS: In Dutch, "ij" is pronounced much the same as "y". 5) In the 'old days', females in German regions were known by their fathers' last name with the suffix "-in" added. For instance, a daughter of Johann Haas would be Magdalena Haasin. When married, she would not take her husbands' name; she would be known as Magdalena Haasin, wife (Ger: frau; Fr: femme) of Michael Schmitt. 6) Well, what then is the meaning or origin of the name HAAS? A: see #4. ~~~Paul Haas

    3. For instance, a daughter of > Johann Haas would be Magdalena Haasin. Hi In Slovakia, the feminine version is HAASOVA. My grandmother and aunts used that version of the name, and when I went to Slovakia in 1998, my cousin introduced me to everybody as Amanda HAASOVA as well. I usually go by my husband's name which is very traditional Essex county, English name of Lovitt, and my cousin said that everybody would just laugh at it, so it was best to stick to my birth name.
