I have an interest in the HAAS surname. This was my great-great-grandmother's maiden name, and I'd like to find out more about her. Her name was: ANNA MARIE HAAS - b. 1828 in Neufschattel, Canton Bern, Switzerland m. 1850 in Switzerland to JACOB STRAUB d. 1910 in St. Louis, MO, USA Anna Marie HAAS' husband JACOB STRAUB was born in 1825 in Thurgau, Thuregurek Canton, Switzerland, and died in 1907 in St. Louis, MO, USA. Family info says he was a "follower of Jesus," an officer in the Swiss Army, and in St. Louis a co-owner of a gentleman's tailoring shop. JACOB STRAUB's grandfather had a dairy farm in Switzerland and served as a "mayor and captain" in Thurgau, Switzerland. He "fought against the Austrians when Switzerland became a republic" and "gave money to the government (Swiss)" during the war. Either before of after this, the Austrians "poisoned the stream" on his farm during the war and killed all his cattle. ANNA MARIE HAAS and husband JACOB STRAUB left Switzerland in Aug. 1854 for the Americas. They stopped for a time in Paris, France, for the birth of daughter MARIA LOUISA STRAUB on Sept. 11, 1854. They then proceeded on to New Orleans, LA, (French Terr.), landing in 1856. From New Orleans, they went briefly to Highland, IL, and on to St. Louis, MO. On Aug. 1, 1860, in St. Louis, MO, JACOB STRAUB became a naturalized citizen of the USA. The children of ANNA MARIE HAAS and JACOB STRAUB were named: MARIA LOUISA; CHARLES; WILLIAM C.; JOHN; GEORGE C.; and EMMA. MARIA LOUISA & EMMA had beautiful singing voices and sang with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Both, however, died young and their children were raised by the grandparents (ANNA MARIE HAAS & JACOB STRAUB.) This is about all I know of these gggrandparents of mine. I'd love to know more about the HAAS family in Switzerland. Who were ANNA MARIE HAAS' parents, grandparents, siblings? Did any of them come to the USA as well? There is a HAAS Bakery near here that may belong to another HAAS relative. Other names that *may* be associated with this family are: BAMBERGER, HOFMUELLER, GOLDEN. One of MARIA LOUISA's daughters mentioned these names in her Bible but no one here knows them. Hoping you can help out some. :-> Diane in St. Louis, MO at jtwiswall@earthlink.NET --- James Wiswall --- jtwiswall@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
