Folks there is a particularly nasty virus making the rounds. I normally do not encourage the posting of virus notices because so many of them are hoaxes. However this particular virus or worm is sending messages that give the senders address as someone you have in your address book or using a Rootsweb list address. Please go to: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus1.html and read the information about this virus. Some of the list managers are reporting that people are unsubscribing from lists for fear of getting this virus/worm. Please don't get in a panic and unsubscribe, just go read the information and then take the necessary steps to protect yourself. Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Hello Listers and Happy Holidays; I am new to this list and looking for information on Jacob Haas. I don't have much info on him but know that his wife's name was Caroline. He was born abt. 1865-1880. He was from Germany but somehow ended up in Prussia. I believe (from stories passed down ) that he arrived in America first.1890-1905. His wife came later with at least one child, Rudolph Haas. They lived in the Cleveland , Ohio area. Children were Rudy, Herman, and 3 daughters. I know that this is not much info to go on but am searching for more info on this family. Jacob's parents names, where in Germany they were from, Caroline's maiden name. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Susan

Hi Ruth, We noticed that you were of Swiss Haas descent. We think our family left Swiss and went to Alsace and then to Odessa area of the Ukraine. If you ever encounter some Haas descendants from that line, please let us know. Hi, I was given this transcribed information from the 1900 & 1920 Newark, Essex Co, NJ census. At this point it doesn't fit into my HAAS line, and I thought maybe it would help someone else. 1900 John HAAS age 20 born Sept 1879 Austria, living at 661-1/2 South 11th St. Newark with wife Elizabeth age 22 born Oct 1876 Germany and two children: John age 2 born Nov 1897 NJ & Albert age 6/12 born Dec 1899 NJ. 1920 John HAAS age 22 living at 55 Montgomery Ave, Newark with his aunt Mary GARD. No sign of Albert or parents. Kris Goszka Warsaw, VA
Hi, I am looking for the following HAAS line: 1 John Haas . +Elizabeth ? m: in Austria-Hungary (?) ........ 2 *John Haas b: 14 Jan 1879 in Austria d: 18 Jun 1957 in Metuchen, NJ ............ +*Emma Messner b: 28 Jan 1879 in Austria m: Abt. 1900 in Newark, NJ d: 23 Jun 1952 in Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Newark, NJ ................... 3 John Jr. Haas b: 1902 in Newark, NJ d: 20 Jan 1976 in Somerville, NJ ....................... +Frances d: 12 Dec 1975 ................... 3 *Wilhelmina S. Haas b: 15 Sep 1904 in Newark, NJ d: Oct 1988 in Tom's River, NJ (?) ....................... +*Frank Joseph Perry b: 7 Jul 1905 in Newark, NJ m: in NJ d: 3 Dec 1974 in Point Pleasant Hospital, Point Pleasant, NJ ................... 3 Emma Haas b: Abt. 1913 in Newark, NJ ....................... +Joseph Kinley ................... 3 Matilda Haas b: Abt. 1917 in Newark, NJ ....................... +Harvey Stone ................... 3 Margaret Haas b: Abt. 1918 in Newark, NJ d: 7 Nov 1950 ....................... +Mike Korsun ................... 3 Louisa Julia Haas b: 1920 ................... 3 Florence Haas b: in Newark, NJ ....................... +Nicholas Kohut ........ 2 Millie Haas b: in Austria-Hungary (?) ............ +August Wittendorfer John HAAS Jr, supposedly came to the USA in 1896 from Austria, to New York City and then to Newark, NJ. I don't know if his parents & sister came with him or not. He would have been about 16. I have found a John HAAS age 20 in the 1920 Newark, Essex Co, NJ census, but that John's birthday is listed as being in Sept 1879 (not Jan 1897), and he is married to an Elizabeth (not an Emma), with two children both born in NJ in 1897 & 1899 (John & Emma supposedly married in 1900, had their first child in 1902). This is the only John HAAS I found in NJ at this age for 1900. There is a strong possibility that this is all a coincidence (that the information is just similar to my John HAAS), and my John was actually in New York City at this time. It is also possible that the John found in 1900 is my John, and that he was married prior to marring Emma MESSNER (I need to find John HAAS & Emma MESSNER's marriage record for 1900 (supposedly in Newark, NJ) and hope that no one lied about being married prior to this marriage. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kris Goszka 'Warsaw, VA
I have this poem in my collection of genealogy information. I loved it so much that I have named my FTMer file The Voices in My Heart. Thank you for sharing it again. Cin
Hi Listmates, I got this from one of the list I'm on. It's great reading. Jean CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown
