Hi, DDMc! Looking for Catherine whose parents might have been Peter and Mary Haas who were living in Hampshire County, Virginia and were listed on the 1850 Census of that county. Living in their household at that time was the following children who I believe were their daughter's and Israel MAYBERRY's children. Their names were: Mary age 21, Thomas age 19, Sarah age 13. In the same county on the 1850 Census there was an Israel MAYBERRY living in the household of John and Sarah COOPER their family to include another lady named THORNBERRY age 60. Another MAYBERRY (who I believe to be my ggrandfather Francis age 16 was living with the Simon B or D TAYLOR family. I know next to nothing about this surname except what I have learned recently upon the discovery of being married to my gggrandpa she would have been my gggrandma. Here is what I have. Hi Dan, Small world huh? I spent most of my life living in Houston and I don't think I ever ran across another Haas there! I appreciate your data and will file it -in case. I think my Joseph lived until the late 30's because my Mother remembers my father saying he met his grandfather once when he was a small boy. The family lore is that he died in New Jersey but frankly no one is left who remembers anything. Genealogy is a lot easier with those big families! Seeking information on children of William G. Haas & Verena Wanner, of Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota. Mena (Minnie) Haas was born September 1867 in Wisconsin. She married Unknown Strickland. Child of MENA HAAS and Unknown Strickland was Ester Strickland. Charles G. Haas was born November 1872 in Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota. He married Olive F. Willard in 1892. She was born November 1872 in Fairview, Minnesota. Children of Charles Haas & Olive Willard were: Harold (Herold) C. Haas, born in March 1893, Dawson, Madison County, Minnesota; married Elizabeth Vaughn who died September 1963, Rapid City, South Dakota; and Minnie V. Haas, born in January 1899, Milbank, South Dakota. Pedigree of this family is William G.; Johann Georg, Johann Georg, Johann (Hans) Georg; Johannes & Johann Ludwig. Migration runs from Kork, Baden to Scott County, Illinois; LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Lake City, Minnesota, and into the Dakotas. Thanks for any assistance.
The activity on this list has me really encouraged! I am looking for any information on my great-grandfather Joseph P. HAAS born around 1880 in St.Louis, Mo. He married Marie "Mamy" C. MEYER from Belleville, IL in 1905. They had two children, Lee Roy HAAS (born 1907 in Belleville, IL), and Eunice HAAS. Eunice was institutionalized after a head injury and never had children. I hope someone will recognized Joseph P. and place him as a sibling or son. The family lore was that they came from the Alsace region. After reading the recent postings this looks distinctly possible! Thanks for any information, Joy Haas Killough
Hi Paul Haas, My grandfather was born near Odessa, Ukraine but his grandfather, Jacob Haas, was born in Birlenbach, Alsace in 1764. He married Elizabeth Leyenburger and they had a son, Friedrich, in about 1799. We have met several Haas families within 50 miles of Birlenbach but have not been able to find any links. Your help in the future would be greatly appreciated. To add to the above, we took a picture of a house/barn in Hunspach, Alsace that had a beam above the doorway into the barn and while my husband Larry and his brother were visiting with the two ladies there I noticed that there was something written on the beam so I took a picture. Also I pointed it out to them when they returned to the car. The house had belonged to a Michael Haas and his wife Eva Stempfel. On the beam it had a 18 on the far left side, then Michael Haas with the marriage sign (oo) and then Eva Stempfel with 78 to the far right. We assumed that they got married in 1878. That is all we know about it. Michel (Michael) HAAS and wife Elizabeth (nee Huntsweigle) evidently lived in the Bas Rhin region of Alsace, France. Michel's father was said to be a gendarme, Michel himself a tavern-keeper. Both Michel and Elizabeth were born about 1780. These people were of the LUTHERAN faith. They had seven children: Michel (the younger), Magdalena, Elizabeth, Barbara, Katherine, Margaret, & Jacob. The eldest son, Michel, had married Magdalena Schweikhardt, who may have come from the community of Wingen in Bas Rhin, and they had one child while still in France. Her family had operated a brewery in Alsace. Members of Magdalena's family had preceeded her to America. In 1830, Michel, his wife, their seven children, together with son Michel's wife Magdalena & infant, boarded a sailing ship in Le Havre, France, bound for (NYCity?). By 1834, this entire family had settled in a community of Alsatian farmers in East Eden, Erie County, NY (30 miles due south of Buffalo). Son Michel contributed to the building of St. John's United Evangelical (Lutheran) Church on Nohl's (Mohl) Hill on East Eden Road in the 1830's. (The vacant church building burned in 1959; its cemetery still marks its location) Of the seven Haas children who emigrated to Western NY from Alsace, four remained in the Eden/Hamburg area, and three settled in the city of Buffalo. Those whose families remained in the southern region of Erie County, NY: Michel (Michael), Magdalena, Elizabeth, & Katherine. One of Michel's sons, George, and wife Eleanor (nee Tyrer) moved on to the Withee/Dodgeville area of Wisconsin. Those who migrated to the growing city of Buffalo: Margaret, Jacob, & Barbara. My greatest challenge at present is to locate the community(s) in Alsace where this Haas family originated. Most likely not far from Wissembourg. (If only ONE of those original immigrants had left a note with their hometown name on it!!) ~~~Paul Paul S. Looking for information on Simon HAAS and his wife Susanna WHITTENBERG. Where they were born at and when and where did they get married? Thank you, Kate Keller Bourland
My Haas line is Nancy Haas , daughter of Albert Gallatin Haas and Louisa Patterson, who were living in DeKalb County TN in 1850. By 1853 Nancy is living in Randolph County AR and married to William Washington Bennett. The only other Haas I find in AR is her brother, William Dillard Haas. By 1857, Nancy Haas Bennett has moved to California, where she died in 1916. Sue
