    1. [HAAS-L] Everything I Need to Know About Life I Learned from Trees
    2. Joy & Bob Stefan
    3. This poem was passed along to me by a friend who is not doing genealogy, but I think its analogies fit our hobby wonderfully: "Everything I Need to Know About Life I Learned from Trees" It's important to have roots. In today's complex world, it pays to branch out. Don't pine away over old flames. If you really believe something, don't be afraid to go out on a limb. Be flexible so you don't break when a harsh wind blows. Sometimes you have to shed your old bark in order to grow. There are wide years and thin years, and the lines show. If you want to maintain accurate records, keep a log. Grow where you're planted. It's perfectly okay to be a late bloomer. Avoid people who would like to cut you down. Lean into the sun and fresh rain. As you approach the autumn of your life, you can't hide your true colors. It's more important to be strong and honest than popular. Sometimes you have to pull up your roots and move on. And always remember as you go through life to give yourself time to blossom.

    3. I am researching my grandma's side of the family and only have her grandpa's surname (Haas) to go on. I know that he was married twice, having one child by each wife: Elizabeth and Lou. I do not know this man's first name or the name of either wife. Also, for at least part, if not all his life, he lived in Logansport, IN (Cass Co.) I have done much research in Cass County and can't seem to find any records of either child's birth or their parents' full names. I would appreciate any help on locating the names of these lost relatives. Thanks! Jae

    1. [HAAS-L] Where do I get the PML messages?
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. I've had a couple of people ask where I get the Haas messages I post off and on to the list. Rootsweb has several "perks" for people who donate $24.00 a year or more. One of these "perks" is a service called PML which allows you to list the surnames you are researching. If any message is posted to: (1) a Rootsweb mail list (2) a GenConnect Board (3) a surname query - a copy is sent to your mailbox. It's a wonderful Resource. Here's where you can donate your $24.00 http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Once you have donated you may then subscribe to the PML service. He may have been heading to California, but I was only 10 at the time I'm not really sure. I'm sure he would appear in the 1929 census, but since I don't know his father's name I don't no where to look. He also had a sister named Dorothy. Could you give me any help? William J. Bell

    2. John T. Halbert
    3. A snapshot of history that may be of interest as to why your grandfather considered himself German heritage. Up to 1918 and the end of WW1 the long established Austrian-Hungary Empire was ruled by the Hapsburgs. In those centuries there were numerous German enclaves and geographic areas all the way to the Volga River and the Black Sea. Large numbers were in the Crimea (Black Sea Germans - Schwartzmeer Deutsche) and Central Russia (Volga Deutsche). These enclaves were hard hit in the Stalin years and most were forced to Siberia. Along the Hungarian/Serbian border were the Donauschwaben - Danube Schwaben. May of these generations are still there today. There are still such enclaves in Hungary and Romania. The area of Kösice (or Kaschau in German) was one of these enclaves. In 1900 it was the capitol of the Hungarian provence of Abauj-Torna, with a population of about 29,000 and was the seat of a Bishop with a cathedral. It remained part of Hungary until 1945. Hope this helps in providing some insight into German heritage in these areas of eastern Europe.

    3. Hi again Amanda, My father-in-law (the Slovak) is terribly uneducated, and when we have tried to trace his roots (even with a trip to Slovakia), we didn't get very far. But he did mention one time he thought the Stefan name might be German. I had tried to tell him that, especially since it doesn't follow the traditional spelling of true Slovak names. The fact there is illegitimacy in his lines doesn't help my research either. Since your g-father was b. in NW Slovakia, it could be he was one of the many Ger-Russians in transit from Germany to Bessarabia. Have you tried the Bessarabian lists? If not, check out these web sites: http://www.bessarabia.com http://www.AHSGR.org http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/gerrus/ On the last site, there is a link called "Electronic Discussion Groups" that will lead you to the various Ger-Rus lists. Also, to search the online records that have been indexed for Bessarabia, go to: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/odessa.html then click "To the Library" and click on the Full Text Search button. Type in whatever name(s) you are looking for and see what might pop up. Also, don't ignore the HASS spelling when dealing with the HAAS name. You might even want to consider HAASE. After exploring these avenues, if you find something promising, get back to me and I'll put you in touch with someone more expert on the resources than I am. Good luck with your searching! Hi It is strange, as my father always referred to his father as a German, although the village he was born in is in north west Slovakia. 3. Hello Amanda: Thanks for visiting our HAAS site! I can find no connection to your family but if you go to Rootsweb.com you can search a large database for HAAS. I am always glad to hear from our friends from "down under". Yours is the third one this week and the second one today.
