I want to sincerely thank all of you for your most informative responses to my request for doing research at the FHC in Utah . What great information I received. Thank you. I'll be sure to post my findings when I return in May. Sincerely, Victoria im_sailing@worldnet.att.net
Hi, The LDS Library in Salt Lake City IS CLOSED SUNDAYs and does close around 5pm on Saturdays. Time your visit accordingly. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir broadcasts live from the tabernacle every Sunday morning. I don't remember the exact time, but it may be as early as 9am when you can enter and enjoy the entire choral program TWICE if you wish, for they practice the entire program before broadcast time. We were there last October and just happened to attend the last performance by the Choir's conductor of the past 25 years. ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Hulett <marcompro@juno.com> To: <HAAS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 20, 2000 10:11 AM Subject: Re: [HAAS-L] Utah Research Center

error in last email: << familysearch.org site and log onto the family library section, type in your surnames or areas where you are looking for land records or whatever and >> I meant to say log onto the family catalog. That way you can skip looking into the card catalog or using their computer to look up what books or films you need to see. Hope this makes sense to you. opal.
You'll have no trouble finding the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. It's on the west side of Temple Square which is in the center of downtown Salt Lake City. There are plenty of staff members and volunteers on hand to help you, especially on the main floor where you find U.S. and Canadian reference books. U.S. and Canadian film and microfische are on the second floor. Your main interest will probably be the first basement which includes German research material as well as material from most other foreign countries other than the British Isles. The second basement has material from the British Isles. I was able to trace my Haas family back to Wurtemburg through references and microfilms available on the first basement. Across Temple Square to the east is the Joseph Smith Building where you will find on the fourth floor books and other material related to specific family histories. I don't think there are any Haas books but check the library catalogue which will list any book which include Haas families. There is also a large collection of family group sheets on the fourth floor. Joseph Smith also has many computers available for public use on the fourth floor and on the ground floor which are tied into the LDS Family Search data base. Northeast of the Joseph Smith Building is the Church Office Building where you will find excellent food at very reasonable prices for breakfast and lunch (but you need a pass which you can obtain in the lobby of the main library building). As for what to take, mainly you need the basic information on the families you are researching. This is a fabulous facility where you could spend weeks (many people do). Your best bet to prepare yourself is to visit your local LDS Church (Mormon) Family History Center which is open to anybody doing genealogical research. Brigham Young University, which also has an excellent genealogical section in its library, is about 40 miles away in Orem, UT. Another way to become familiar with the Salt Lake City Family History library is to take one of the many Elderhostel programs officer by BYU. My wife and I have been to five of them. Hope this is helpful. Dave Coslett
Hi Victoria, I am Opal and I was lucky enough to goto Utah also. Our Genealogical group went there for a week in march. I believe you may be getting an address for the library and the Joseph Smith building intertwined. The Joseph Smith Building is about two blocks from the main library. I don't know if you really need a street address as once you get there Everyone will be able to tell you where it is. We stayed at the Wyndam Hotel but the Plaza is even closer (right next door if you go out the side door). The new temple is being built right across the street from the J.Smith bldg. . What we did was walked through temple square and smelled the flowers on our way to the Joseph Smith. There they have a lot of soundex and censuses as well as the family books, which were written by Mormons about 20 years ago or so. I bet you could find the address on the internet. But the address of the Wyndham Hotel is 215 W South Temple Salt Lake City, Utah 84101. I did not have too much time to get ready before hand and I wasted a lot of time up there doing the looking up stuff. If you get into the familysearch.org site and log onto the family library section, type in your surnames or areas where you are looking for land records or whatever and pull up films and books. to read. make a list of the numbers then you can go to the library and just look on the shelves and find the books a table to sit at while you are reading it and have a blast. There are many copy machines and the sisters and elders will help you get that situated to copy film. It costs 25 cents for the copying film. The library is the largest in the world. One thing you should remember is that all sisters and elders are not created equal. Some mean well and try to help and really don't know that much about it. Others are more knowledgeable but are too busy to help too much, So you will find your own films and books etc. good luck, opal --
Well....You're very lucky. The Salt Lake Library has an indepth website, as I recall...It should be hyperlinked to familysearch.com I've never been there but have info on where to stay, if you need it. The following info comes from friends: The library is open til bout 10 pm most nights, i think it closes earlier on Sat and closed on Sundays.. Tho I believe BYU Library or perhaps one of the other universities is open Sundays and has Gen info I hear the Salt Lake Library has microwaves and a place to eat. So you never need to leave...Tho many researchers hike a couple of blocks to Temple Square where there's a reasonably priced buffet. Before you hike to the buffet, be sure to get directions and as I recall, you may have to purchase tokens at the library to pay for your lunch... Re Research-- Bring lots of quarters and dimes...I hear even they run out. Look for info you can't order from Salt Lake. Your local FHC should have a handout on the Salt Lake Library and I'm certain there are several books on it and how to research. They also offer short classes for free so you might want to inquire abt that. Re Reading German records...suggest you buy Edna's Benz book "If I can, You Can" That's how I learned. Edna was a wonderful gal. She died in Dec. Now for my request...Please check to see if they have any family records from Widdern, Wurttemberg. I am searching for info re my gr grandfather Christian HAAS of Widdern... That's all I know. The only Widdern records microfilmed are a few surnames from the 1500's Shirley in San Diego On Sun, 19 Mar 2000 23:29:22 -0700 "Victoria" <im_sailing@worldnet.att.net> writes: > Hello fellow Haas researchers, > > I need to say thank you to all of you on this list, along with two > other specific thank you mentions! Hello fellow Haas researchers, I need to say thank you to all of you on this list, along with two other specific thank you mentions! My two other thanks go to the following... First is Linda...you are terrific! Then by "lurking" I saw a wonderful gentleman that was so helpful to me awhile ago in another mail room, while others were...how can I say...just plain rude...no...jerks! OK, that's in the past. But thank you John T. Halbert. I finally feel confident to participate actively in a mailing list. (Maybe it was me (newbie!), but I tried to live up to the "standards", only to be mostly ridiculed with ridiculous responses. So onward.....and try again...) What I truly am respectively asking of all of you is the following. I have the most neat opportunity of being in Utah around the first week of May. I would very much like to visit and obtain valuable info from the "main" Family History Center...But which do I go to? I checked the Internet, but through my query received several different addresses in Salt Lake City. Once I have the address of "the real thing", what would all of you recommend I ask for or bring with me when doing my research ? I am very much a "newbie" to these centers...and unfortunately I was lost and did not have a good experience in Mesa, Az nor any productive directive help, even though I requested that help. My Haas family is still in Germany and I am more than willing to post that history, but much (at least 75% of the history) comes from the hard copy certificates I have from Germany in German script....thanks to my wonderful mother who was born in Germany! As long as I'm not made fun of in my deciphering (Yes, I can take teasing...( I just don't like the "meanies" I've come across in the past)) and if I could have your assistance, I would like very much to share this. In the meantime, I wish all of you well in your searches and if I can be any assistance I will be most happy to help. Especially since in another month I'll be in THE Family History Center (if I only knew the address :-)). Sincerely, Victoria im_sailing@worldnet.att.net

Duane, How exciting to find such a well organized web page. I can't wait until you have time to get links to files, etc. hooked up. One suggestion, though, is that you include spelling variations of the names, e.g., HAAS/ HASS, and STEPHAN/ STEFAN. A new genealogy site is presently under construction which includes the Haas surname. Each surname page will include sub pages covering such records as Birth, Burial, Census, Land, Marriage, Military and Probate. There will also be sub pages for links to others who have a home page on the same surname, and a Family page where an entire family is presented with all known pertinent information. You will be able to submit your family information for inclusion should you choose to do so. There will also be important links to the various Gen Connect Boards for each surname as well as links to Resource Pages and Surname Mailing Lists for each surname represented. Although we are not ready for you to send us the data on your family just yet, we would like you to take a look at what is up and running so far and send us any comments, questions or suggestions you may have. Please send them to the webmaster of the site, Duane Pierce, at: duapie@sprynet.com, and NOT this surname list. The name of the site is "The Conexion" and the URL is: http://conexion.rootsweb.com/home.htm If you have a home page relating to the Haas surname, you are encouraged to send us the URL and we will place a link to it on our links page. They will be listed in the order they are received. You will be notified when we are ready for you to send us your family information to be included on the other pages should you desire to do so. Thanks, Duane Pierce
