    3. Hello Joy Thanks for the advice. I have contacted a lady who lives in Bytca who did an amazing amount of research for me on the HAAS family in that area. She didn't charge very much, but did more than I could have done on a trip to Slovakia or a pile of letters. She used to work for the Archive there and retired to do freelance research work, probably trebled her salary at the same time. Were any of your father-in-laws's family Jewish? The HAAS family in Slovakia that I am related to - and chasing - were from Puchov in the north west and were a Jewish family. Strangely enough, the only HAAS relative I have found other than immediate family, is a 3rd cousin and he lives in Australia as well! We didn't know that though until we had compared notes a few times and found each other. He lives in Sydney and I am in Western Australia, so we're still around 2700 kilometres apart. My father was born 1928, his father 1879, and his mother 1886. Not many 34 year olds have all 4 grandparents born in the 1800s! My baby grandma was born 1898, was 30 with her first child and 36 with the second. My mother was almost 40 when she had me, her brother was 38 and 45 with his 2 children. Little wonder, that at age 96 my Grandma (Australian born one that is) had 3 grandkids aged 29, 25, 19 and only 2 great-grandsons aged 3 and 2 with another on the way. My uncle in Slovakia is Dad's brother but doesn't go by the name HAAS. Dad was the only male who produced any offspring (sounds like a cattle breeding program?) and that was a girl - me. 3. There were both HASS and HAAS Germans who spent time in Prussia, Romania and Prussia Poland on their way to the Black Sea area of Russia, then known as Bessarabia, today known as Moldavia. (They took many years and about a generation to get to Bessarabia, with many babies born en route who were grown by the time the family finally got to Bessarabia.) Slovakia lies between Poland and Romania. So if you think your old folks might have been some of these people who later became known as Germans from Russia, you might want to check out the G-R lists and web sites. Here are a couple that will get you started: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/odessa.html This is a site where all of the indexed church records will show up. There are thousands - lots of good G-R volunteers! http://www.AHSGR.org http://www.bessarabia.com http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/gerrus/ If you go to this site and click on Electronic Discussion Groups, you will learn about the various mailing lists for GRHS (another GR society, much like AHSGR). Good luck! 3. Hi Amanda, No, there were HAASs in Slovakia too. Trouble is, Slovak records haven't gotten onto the web the way some other countries have. My father in law is from Slovakia (little village near Kosice) and we've been unable to get old church records from there, even with personal visits to his old village. He has a cousin still living there (and a few other relatives), but they just aren't into the technology age yet. If you know where in Slovakia, you might try contacting the archives in Bratislava. I'm pretty sure that's where their archives are, but don't know any contacts for you. Try typing Slovakia Genealogy into a good search engine and you might find something that way. A lot of the common people over there are very nice and want to be helpful. But many of those with decent jobs are left over from the Communist regime and have a very bad attitude, especially towards Americans. Don't know if they'd treat Australians that way or not. Good luck! 3. I am new to this list, and here is my Haas- Henrietta Haas born Dec. 28, 1852 Germany, probably West Prussia. Married August Raffel Nov. 25, 1877. Henrietta and husband August Raffel immigrated to North America in 1891, landing in Montreal, Canada. She had daughters Magdalena 3 Feb 1839, rosina 19 Sept 1841, Maria Salome 22 October 1844 and Friederike 14 November 1847. They emigrated in 1855 to St Louis, Missouri, where she died 26 February 1901. (It seems he died in Dec 1868.) It is a long story we had thought that she was the mother of our Henry Frey of Michigan but now it seems that she was his foster mother for about 10 years. This seems to clear up the mystery of why his 'mother and father' ended up in such different places. Of course it creates several mysteries- Murphy's Law.
