    1. [HAAS-L] Christian HAAS Anna WEIGAND
    2. Hello, I am researching Christian HAAS who married Anna WEIGAND in or near Baden/ Bavaria Germany. They did not emigrate to my knowledge. At least one of their children still has family in Germany as one of my relatives received a phone call from Germany some years ago and there was no follow-up, so the connection was lost. Martin (#1)(b.1834 Germany d.1903 Baltimore, MD) married Caroline KRUG (in Germany?) and they emigrated separately Martin about 1856 through Pennsylvania to Baltimore and Caroline about 1860. They had George, Martin(#2), Joseph, Elizabeth, Caroline and Mary Alice. Martin married Annie Margaret APPEL in Baltimore and had Martin(#3), Emma, Frederick and Anita May. Please contact me directly and cc the list if you like. 1. [HAAS-L] THE CENSUS TAKER
    2. Larry and Tammy Lanning
    3. THE CENSUS TAKER Ever wonder why those censuses just don't add up sometimes? Well we all have "our days" when our world is topsy turvy and effects most everything that happens, and I figure a census taker did too. Of course he might not have realized just how far reaching the effects of his bad day might be. The Census Taker's Home! (from the Sunday Afternoon Rocking series) Well, I'm surely glad to be home, that I am. I tell you another day like this one and I am good mind just to fill them papers out on memory and be done with it. Here, put these socks over there next to the fire to dry out, will you? Got down yonder this mornin and everyone in Household 451 through 486 was gone. Some big shindig going on down there. Good thing the folks in 441 could tell me who they all was. Here, reckon you could go over some of the writin on this here page? Got smeared a bit in the rain. I think you can cipher most of it out. Then them folks down in the holler got suspicious over a census. Said, and derned if they had a point, what difference did it make who they was? Was them guvment folks up in Warshington going to come down here to say howdy do? So they finally let me write down they last name and first initial, but I think they wuz havin a bit of fun with me when they listed who lived in the house. Saw some winkin goin on and I believe I got the same house a youngins in two or three places. It been a day, woman. Honey, git that paper out of Johnny's mouth, will ya? I worked all day on that thing, and no call to let him go chewin it up. Went up the river a piece and tried to get that done fore it come a downpour, but run into trouble there too. Ole Man Jenkins curr dog run me off and I tell you, ain't no call to get eat up over such a thing as this. They ort to be a limit what a man does for his country. Was lucky man down the road mostly knew Jenkins was nigh on sixty years old and was living there with his woman and five youngins from his first marriage plus a passel from the second. We give em good Christian names. Best be doin something bout this pen. It give out on me halfway through. See you havin trouble too. Johnny! Hand that here, boy! And I tell you I would ruther fight grandpap's British than mess with that feller out on the ridge. He got out his shotgun soon as he seen me comin and I went t'other direction. Had Jones tell me about him instead, and he didn't rightly know the feller's first name. said they called him "Squirrel", and it was ok just to put that cause wasn't nobody around here claimin him no how, and they for sure didn't want the guvment knowin there was any relationship. That coffee done? Then got over to Smiths, and ole Hoss was in a nervous fit so wasn't no getting information there. His woman havin another youngin and he looked like he could run right through me when I went to askin how many youngins he had now. Hightailed it out of there, and Miz Hart helped me straighten that household out. Think we got most of the names straight, and as he has had a youngin a year for the last ten, ages purty close too. Now look what Johnny went and done! I tell you, next time this come around I ain't gonna be no where in sight. Farmin a heap easier, and I figger there folks round here what can read and write and cipher and ain't no good fer nothing else we can spare for this foolishness. Pass me another tater, will you?

    1. [HAAS-L] Hindrik Jans de Haas (Netherlands/Friesland : Aengwirden/Haskerland born c.1684)
    2. Andrew Blundell
    3. Hi all, It's a needle in a haystack with such a common surname but here is my DE HAAS ancestor from Aengwirden in Friesland (Netherlands). He was possibly my great-grandmother Akke de Haas' great-grandfather. His name was possibly derived from the name of the area of HASKERLAND (next to Aengwirden) or the village of either OUDEHASKE or NIJEHASKE in Haskerland (means "Hareland") where he may have been born and would have been used because there were several men with the name Hindrik Jans in the Aengwirden area (tax returns of 1749). His possible son Jan married in Drachten (Smallingerland area) on the 09 April 1752 to Sjoerdtje Harkes and on 12 April 1778 to Harmke Fookes. I haven't been able to find son Jan's baptism, but I did find a series of other baptisms: Hindrik Jans de Haas born c.1684 (Haskerland?), married Tjits(ke) Dirks c.1706, on 10/11/1709 new "lidmaten" (church members) in Luinjebert*, also lidmaten there on 02/11/1738; baptisms in Tjallebird*, exc. Hil in Luinjebert*, Dirk in Gersloot* and Aaltje in Terbant*) baptisms by this couple: Jan bapt.25/09/1707 (died as a child??) 1. [HAAS-L] Christmas Eve Gift!!
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. "Christmas Eve Gift" Everyone <g> Don't understand? Well, in our family we have a long Christmas Tradition that goes like this. The idea is to be the first person to say to another person "Christmas Eve Gift" on Christmas Eve. The "loser" then gives the "winner" a small token gift. When the kids are little it's a real gift. A single piece of candy, a penny, a walnut or a pecan wrapped in foil - it doesn't matter what it is as long as it's small and shinny. For the adults it's simply the fun of the game although the "loser" usually gives the "winner" a big hug. Early morning phone calls are the rule for family members who are not actually in the house on Christmas Eve. A sleepy "Christmas Eve Gift" rather than a "hello" is usually greeted with groans and lots of laughter from the caller. Or loud cheers and "gotcha" from the caller if the phone is answered with a "Hello". It's all great fun and everyone looks forward to this Christmas Eve game in my family. The kids especially enjoy this and even the shyest child will soon run to the door to greet the person on the doorstep with shouts of "Christmas Eve Gift"! It is necessary for all adults to have a pocket full of "gifts" and it is required that grandparents always be the "loser"! GOTCHA! <LOL> .... I'm the winner this Christmas Eve so I expect lots of hugs and well wishes!! And to all of you "losers" here is my Christmas Eve gift to you .... A huge hug and my wish that you have a wonderful, happy and joyful Christmas! 1. [HAAS-L] Mail Server will be down
    2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. Good Morning folks. Rootsweb will be moving a bunch of surnames lists to a new e-mail server. Because of this the list will be "down" from Friday, 8 December 2000 at 7:00 A.M. Pacific Standard Time for about 10 - 12 hours. You will be able to post messages and Rootsweb will do their best to hang onto to them, but I would suggest that you wait until the servers are back up sometime on the 9th. This will cut down on the amount of stuff the Rootsweb staff has to keep track of and will also ensure that your message won't get lost in the shuffle. If you are on other surname lists and are wondering if they will be down also here's a full list of the e-mail lists effected. <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lindv/move3> Linda lhaasdav@mindspring.com Home.page http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas Marion.Co.AR http://www.rootsweb.com/~armarion List hostess for -h.a.a.s/l.e.w.a.l.l.e.n/w.a.s.h.i.n.g.t.o.n n.c Interested in Construction? Johannes Haas, b. 3/8/1710/11 and died 11/10/1713 in Oberdorfelden. 4. Anna Clara Haas, b. 5/11/1714 and d. 1/22/1717/18, Oberdorfelden. Magdalene Haas first married Jacob Crouse and second married Andreas Meffert 2/2/1729/30 in Oberdorfelden. He was the son of John Meffert and Anna Koch. He was born 1/2/1706/07 in Wachenbuchen, Hesse and died 8/13/1760 in Chester Co., PA. They had 3 known children. Can anyone take these people further back. Have extensive information on descendants.
