    1. New to list and Gwin line I am researching
    2. I would appreciate any assistance on the following family. Thanks in advance, Christina Descendants of Moses Gwinn Generation No. 1 1. MOSES1 GWINN He married UNKNOWN KINCAID. SOURCE: http://www.riverduck.com/genealogy/gwin/Sources.htm Death records - Bath co VA; Libary of VA microfilm, reel 4, 1890-1896, Bath death register, 1869 (no date). : Amanda Rodgers, typhoid fever, 40, d/o Moses & Mary Gwin, wife of Nelson Rodgers, reported by father Moses Gwin. [I suspect she died in Highland co since that record is more complete, and her death was later reported in Bath by some relative, by why does it say her father is Moses instead of Robert?]. Child of MOSES GWINN and UNKNOWN KINCAID is: 2. i. JOSEPH CORBETT2 GWIN, b. September 15, 1802, Augusta County, Virginia; d. November 20, 1875, Deerfield, Pastures District, Virginia (Augusta County, Virginia). Generation No. 2 2. JOSEPH CORBETT2 GWIN (MOSES1 GWINN) was born September 15, 1802 in Augusta County, Virginia, and died November 20, 1875 in Deerfield, Pastures District, Virginia (Augusta County, Virginia). He married MARY JANE BENSON November 10, 1829 in Bath County, Virginia by Henry S. Keppler, daughter of HAMILTON BENSON and ELIZABETH HODGE. She was born January 06, 1812 in Bath County, Virginia, and died Aft. November 1875. Notes for JOSEPH CORBETT GWIN: SOURCE: http://www.riverduck.com/genealogy/gwin/Sources.htm Death records - Augusta county (Library of VA microfilm; Register of Births, Deaths, & Marriages; Deaths, reel 3), 20 Nov 1875 Joseph Guin, white male, near Deerfield, Pastures district, of gravel, age 75, parents Robert & Sarah Guin, born Augusta county, farmer, reported by wife Mary Jane Guin. SOURCE: http://www.riverduck.com/genealogy/gwin/D1.htm#i2254 Cleek (p.108) says the Joseph with the children shown in the censuses below is Joseph Corbett Gwin, son of Moses Gwin & __Kincaid, b. Sept 15, 1802, d. Nov 20, 1875, married Mary Jane Benson Nov 12, 1829, a dau. of Hamilton Benson and Elizabeth Hodge (a sister of Renick Hodge. The birth, death, and marriage data match the census, although Mary J. would've been only 14 or 15 at marriage. However, the parental assignation is a real problem - Moses & Elizabeth Kincaid didn't marry until 1821, whereas this Joseph was born abt 1802-1804. I think Cleek is wrong about Joseph's parentage and these entries represent Joseph of Robert Jr. This is confirmed by Joseph's death record which lists his parents as Robert & Sarah, as reported by his wife Mary Jane. Joseph of Robert Jr. can't be the Joseph who md Elizabeth Kincaid and died in 1823, because Joseph of Robert Jr was alive in 1843 when Robert Jr wrote his will. 7 Sept 1837 - land deed from Washington Gwinn mentions land adj. to "Joseph Gwin Sr. and Joseph Gwin (of Robert)," - this establishes that Joseph of Robert lived in Augusta at that time and that he was not called Joseph Sr. 27 Nov 1837 deed from Wm Lockridge & Margaret his wife of Bath Co, VA to Joseph Gwinn of Augusta Co, VA, for $500, 144 acres on the Calfpasture River in Augusta Co being the same on which the said Gwinn now lives and adjoining the lands of Joseph Gwinn, Jacob Beck, Enos Meek, and Wm Clayton. Bounds include "corner to Jos. Gwinn Sr.". [Augusta deed bk 59, p.320] -- I believe this land is sold to Joseph of Robert because the bounds indicate that Joseph Sr. is a neighbor and therefore not this Joseph. Apparently Joseph already lived on Lockridge land, probably somehow connected to his mother. Feb 1844: Joseph inherited a 1/8 share of his father Robert's "land in Greenbrier and my share in the Lockridge place on the Big Calfpasture". 12 May 1845: Joseph Gwin, exec'r of Robert Gwin dec'd, sold to Benjamin Thompson land that had been sold to Thompson by Robert in 1840 but not conveyed. Land is 260 acres on Cowardins Big Spring, a branch of Jacksons River in the Warm Springs Valley, on the line of Thomas Adams dec'd, on the side of Warm Springs Mtn. Said land was devised to Robert by his father Joseph Gwin dec'd. Recorded in Bath in Nov 1860. Joseph's statement was filed in Augusta county. [Bath Deed Bk 12, p.175] On Nov 2, 1847, in Augusta County, "the Lockridge farm" [inherited by Robert's children in his will] was sold to Thomas Clayton by Joseph Guin & Mary Jane his wife, Samuel Guin & Elizabeth his wife, and Margaret Guin of Augusta county, David Guin & Jane his wife of Wood county, and Andrew Guin & Polly Guin of Highland county. -- this establishes that Joseph (of Robert) had a wife named Mary Jane and lived in Augusta at that time. 1850 VA, Augusta Co #484 (on other side of Wm Clayton), , 2nd District, 20 June Joseph Gwin/Givin 46 farmer, value: 300, all b.VA George 14 -- Cleek says George Hamilton Robert 8 Mary J. 35 Amanda E. 13 -- Cleek says Amanda Ellen Martha A. 5 Drucilla C. 4 Rebecca J. 9/12 Is this the same person From Ron Gwinn's Lib. of VA patent database: Gwin, Joseph C. Gwin of Augusta in the Lib of VA online index to Confederate pensions is NOT him, as that pension was applied for in 1908 after this Joseph's death. That is John Clayton Gwin. Should try to get will/probate records for his estate. Cleek lists an additional child (of Joseph & Mary Jane) named Joseph who he says migrated to the west, but there is no evidence of him in the 1860 or 1870 census..
